Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. If you hold the match during the last two weeks of October I'll come all of the way from Alaska. I plan a trip to the southeast every year during those two weeks. Dan
  2. I shoot Steel Challenge with a GP100. I load 357 brass mainly because I don't like cleaning the ring left in the chamber at the end of 38 special cases. My pet load is 357 brass with 5.0 gr of Unique and 158 gr cast bullet. This is a very good 38ish load for ringing steel. I haven't seen any Unique in the last two years so things are getting tight for my pet load. What I do have is a pretty good supply of 700X and Red Dot. I'm in the process of evaluating some 700X loads that look promising, despite variations in powder metering. I would like to do the same with Red Dot but there isn't load data for these components. I'm currently shooting a Speer cast SWC (swaged actually). Looking at my Speer book, Alliant web site, and Lymans 48th and 49 th there just isn't any Red Dot data for 357. There is, however, data for 38 special. I suspect there isn't any 357 data because Red Dot gets into pressure trouble before magnum velocities are reached. There's more room in 357 brass than in 38 Special so conventional wisdom is that there should be lower chamber pressure than in a 38 special. But without at least some printed data I am reluctant to just load a 38 special load into 357 magnum brass. I'd like to hear what you guys experience is in loading 38 special loads into 357 brass. Particularly using Red Dot. Dan
  3. Yes Bamboo, I shoot in heavy metal division. Just the division I have always preferred. The ELS belt system is about the best thing going for three gun competition. Just slide on or off the ammo holders as you need them. Dan
  4. Courtesy of some most EXCELLENT work by BOB PERDUE at 4WHEEL GUNS I now have revolver moon clip holders for my Safariland ELS belt rig. Before I get started with the hardware let me state that not only does Bob do excellent work it is simply a pleasure to work with him. I sent him the ELS forks, we had a couple of phone conversations, and he took it from there. He then delivered an excellent product at fair price in a timely manner. What more could anyone ask for. This couldn't have been better if I had done it myself. Thanks Bob. In the following pics I have tried to show all of the aspects of incorporating my moon clip holders with the ELS rig. The first pics show how Bob made the standoffs to attach the ELS forks to his North Mountain posts. The pics make it appear that the holder standoffs push them quite a distance from the belt. Actually from the inner most part of the ELS fork to what would be the rear plate of the post holder is about 3/4”. I find this to be just the right distance. (That is, from the ELS fork edge closest to the belt to the back plate of the post holder where the ammo rides is about 3/4”.) Note the spacing between the holders when on the belt. This was dictated by the available mounting holes for the ELS receivers. The spacing is plenty for pulling full moon clips. I miss a lot so I have five moon clip holders. FWIW I am right handed and load my revolver with my strong hand. (Same method as Jerry Miculek.) The next pics are for a 3 Gun set up. I have removed one of the moon clip holders and replaced it with a shotgun shell holder. (I load my shotgun with my weak hand.) It is a little crowded between the fourth moon clip holder and the shotgun shell holder but not enough for me to be concerned. I showed pics with my Safariland shotgun shell holder that holds four rounds and my TK Customs 4x4 shell holder that holds 8 rounds. I've tried it a few times and it seems as though it will work fine for either of these. The ELS moon clip rigs take up less space on my belt than did my 1911 magazine carriers. I shoot heavy metal so I went from carrying four 1911 mag holders, two 7.62 x 51 magazines, and three shotgun shell holders to four 45 ACP moon clip holders, two 7.62 x 51 magazines, and four shotgun shell holders. More ammo on my belt only means I can miss more. The five moon clip holders I use for USPSA and other events. FWIW I am 6' 1” tall, 235 lbs, with a 38” waist. I am very pleased with my ELS belt system and I can't say enough about Bob Perdue and the work he did. To my knowledge Bob is the only source for moon clip holders for the Safariland ELS system. Dan Pics to follow.
  5. Um, yep this is exactly what I am looking for. Couldn't make anything better if I had made it myself. I believe there is a market for these as well as the 4 and 5 post design. It certainly won't be as big a market as the Tech Lok fills but a market none the less.
  6. That is very good to know! I'll be keeping a sharp eye out for when you might have something available. Given my experience with the ELS system I believe my preference would be for a single post holder with an ELS fork. There is no doubt the 4 or 5 post holder would probably be more popular but I would want to do a lot of testing to see if two ELS forks would properly support a fully loaded multiple post holder under USPSA and 3 gun conditions. If there is anything that I can do to help you guys please just ask. Dan
  7. Hi guys I have been lurking around here for quite some time so it must be time for me to join the fun. I am primarily a USPSA and Steel Challenge shooter with a side order of 3 gun every so often. I have a Safariland ELS belt system that I keep set up for 3 gun and just remove the shotgun and rifle pouches for USPSA. This keeps my SR1911 mags in the same place regardless which game I'm shooting. A while ago I abondoned my SR1911 in favor of a GP100 at Steel Challenge. I have had so much fun with my GP100 I bought a 625 JM. For Steel Challenge using moon clips for the 625 and speed loaders for the GP100 from a pouch isn't a problem but now I want to shoot my 625 at USPSA and 3 Gun and I'm not sure how I'll carry the moon clips. Reading here it doesn't take long to learn that North Mountain has about the best moon clip holder. I agree and intend to purchase one of these if I can figure out how to mate it up with the ELS. Once I get my belt set up I intend to leave it that way but since I will be using my 625 at every game I won't be removing the moon clip holder very often. The North Mountain holders all come with Tech Lok's so it stands that I should just put it on my belt with these. I tried a couple of Tech Lok's in about the position I think the North Mountain would be but that makes the belt length almost too short due to the added width to get around the Tech Lok and also moves a lot of the outer belt away from contact with the inner belt. If I go this route I'll have to get a longer outer belt. I have looked at the bolt hole patterns of the ELS and Tech Lok's with thoughts of mounting the ELS forks directly to the North Mountain and in order to hold securely I would need to drill some holes in the back of the North Mountain holder. If I were to mount the ELS forks to the North Mountain it looks to me like the screrw heads would inetrfere with the moon clips. I have looked closely at the pics of the 1, 4, and 5 post holders from North Mountain and I'm just having trouble figuring a way to get these mounted with the ELS system, If anyone here has successfully mounted one of the North Mountain moon clip holders using the Safariland ELS I would really like to hear how you did it. Dan
