  1. I recently purchased a RIA mil spec 1911(this on is the FS 9mm)for the purpose of learning how to work on 1911's. I purposely bought the no frills mil spec version because I wanted to learn how to change the sights, trigger components, fit the barrel bushing, barrel and slide to frame fit.The mil spec version has a staked in front sight and a small dovetail and small sights on the rear. At first I was planning on having the slide cut and adding the sights like my STI Trojan. But since I don't have access to a milling machine just cutting the slide was going to cost me $100, not counting the sights. I then read in a couple of posts where there are some pretty good options for sights using the factory slide. I want a fiber optic sight for the front (preferably a .90) and I see where Dawson has them with the narrow tennon which I think fits my front but I don't know what height to buy since I also intend to change the rear. As far as the rear goes it has a small dovetail which is different from the dovetail on my tactical model RIA. I need to know who sells a rear sight that fits this rear dovetail and what height to purchase for the front. I have called Dawson and the guy on the phone told me to get the one that fits the tactical model and that's obviously wrong because it doesn't look anything like the rear sight on the mil spec. I posted this same question on a 1911 forum and got conflicting answers. I also used the search function here to no avail. thanks in advance for any help.
  2. Thanks Jake but those are significantly higher priced. I am looking for lowest cost options retaining goog quality.
  3. J-Ho, May I ask where?
  4. Everyone's got to get a first one in at some point. You asked for some feedback on them and since I've used them locally here I gave you mine based on the batch I bought. My opinion was free so you can take it for what it's worth if you want. Safe shooting! ok...I ordered 1500 230g bullets. I will report on how it goes. Thanks for the info.
  5. Not to seem paranoid here.... but the only post confirming so far is also the first post from user.
  6. I saw on another post of mine someone recommended "zcastbullets" as a good source for lead bullets. I went to their website and their prices are significantly lower than what I have seen elsewhere. Is this legit? I also noted the poster had only one post on this forum. They are offering LRN 230g 45acp @$34/500. If this is legit I definately want to try some.
  7. I checked out the website "zcastbulletz" and there prices listed are much better than I have seen anywhere else. What gives? Is this legit? I notice the poster has only this one post.
  8. I looked up all the Hogdin Data before posting. Sorry I wasn't more clear...i was asking about going lower and the Hogdon data doesnt reference springs.
  9. I want a target load with the lowest possible recoil for my wife's 1911. These rounds will only be for practice/target shooting no need to make major. I only have 230 gr bullets and clays powder. I also have an assortment of springs. Any suggestions?
  10. I am new to reloading and I just started loading 230g 45acp and have a few questions. First let me say I just purchased an STI Trojan and Spartan and will be shooting the loads in these guns. I am currently loading precision Delta FMJs with 4.0g of Clays at 1.250 picked up range brass. First question: what is the easiest way to sort the brass for large/small primers? Like I said I am new to this and I can,t easily tell with a quick glance at the primers. I did notice all of the small primers I have sorted have been Federal headstamp with a dot after word Federal. I am loading on a Dillon 650. Am I correct to assume that if a large primer case gets mixed in while setup for small primers that the primer will go boom when trying to seat a large primer int a small primer casing? Next, who sells the cheapest(good quality+shipping) 230 grain FMJs and also 230g lead RN bullets? I purchased some 230g lead from GaArms last week at gunshow. How much powder for the lead230s? I am looking for lowest recoil. I am using the stock recoil springs (16lb?) but I have a wolf spring kit going all the way down to 11lb in one pound increments. I also puschased shock buffs but I have never used these before. Which end of the recoil spring do they go on? What powder/spring combo would you recommend for lowest recoil? Thanks in advance
  11. I am about to load some lead rounds (Ga Arms 230g LRN) and am wondering how frequently I need to clean the carbide sizing die and bullet seating die.(both Dillon) what do you cleans your dies with and what is your preffered cleaning method?
  12. I just started loading 45acp and so far I have loaded Precision Delta 230g FMJ hardball with 4.0 grains of Clays @1.250 OAL. At the gun show yesterday I bought some 230g lead ball ammo from Georgia Arms and I was wondering what a good starting point would be for the lead bullets. I remember reading on here where you use less powder for lead to get the same velocity? Thanks in advance.
  13. I am getting an order up for powder and primers to load 45acp(for the first time). I am ordering Hogdon Clays powder. I have been loading 9mm with winchester primers because I'm using a reduced power striker spring on my 9. I was going to order the winchester large pistol primers to load the 45's but they are out of stock. What other primers would you recommend? They have CCI,Cheddite,Federal,Remington,Tula, and Wolf. I will be using 230g JHP and shooting them in an STI Trojan that I have on order. Thanks for your help
  14. Hello, I recently started reloading and so far I have only been loading 9mm. I just ordered a STI Trojan in 45acp and am about to start loading 45's. I see here that "Clays" seems to be pretty popular for loading 45acp. Is this Hogdon Clays powder? I am looking for a soft shooting load so what othere powders would you recomend if not Clays? I plan on loading 230 grain FMJ's initially(I already ordered some from Precision Delta) and probably some 147 grain lead loads for practice. Do the 230's sound good or would you recommend 200 grain bullets? Thanks in advance
  15. Would I benefit from a powder bar micrometer? If so where do I get one and how much?
  16. I just started loading for the first time right after Christmas (XL650) and I started with a pound of titegroup. My powder measure is now about 1/4 full and this is the last of the tg. I ordered 4lbs of N320 and I would like to know the best and most effecient method of changing from one type of powder to another while using up as much as possible of the tg. Maybe after you're done laughing at my noob ignorance you guys can help. You have been a great resource so far and i am really enjoying reloading. Thanks in advance
  17. Skydiver, I am using stock springs in both guns. I used all my mg's so I cant't compare bullet length. Does anybody have any of the montanna gold 147 fmj's laying around? If so what is the bullet length? Thanks again
  18. I loaded my first thousand rounds with: 3.1g titegroup 147g montanna gold fmj Range brass OAL 1.120 These ran around 880fps thru my XDM 5.25 and similar speeds thru my new M&P pro 5 inch barrel. Now I just switched to Delta Precision 147g truncated cone fmj same power, brass, and OAL and I just got back from the range. These new loads worked fine in the XDM but in the M&P about 4 out of 10 either jammed while feeding or ejecting the empty case. Also the slide would lock back after last round. Help? I'm thinking more powder? What about OAL? Same recipe mg 147s worked fine in &P o ly diff is the brand and shape of bullet?
  19. Twodownzero, i loaded the mg's at 1.120 but with the truncated cone bullet shape will the same COL work?
  20. I just started reloading after Christmas and for the first batch I ordered montanna gold 147 g rnfp. i liked them but I see where alot of guys on here shoot delta precision bullets which are cheaper(especially with mg price increase). i ordered 2000 Delta 147g with the truncated cone. I was loading the mg's at 1.125 lenth and was wondering if due to the different shape of the bullet I need a different COL.I would like to shoot these in several different guns and since they all feed factory ammo just fine I want one length that will work on all of them. Thanks
  21. I got a new Dillon XL650 for Christmas and this is my first time loading. I purchased a RCBS lock out die forstation 3 and I am having problems getting it set up. The instructions are not very clear. Where should the white line be at full stroke? I originally thought from reading the instructions that it should be right at the top o the die. Also instead of "locking the press"'it seems to push down and curl down the case flare, ruining the brass. Thanks in advance
  22. I am new to reloading and I have anotther question for you guys. In alot of my loaded rounds I am getting a slight bulge in the middle of the case that appears to be where the bottom of the bullet sits. I am using 147g Montana Gold's loaded with 3.2gr of tite group. I set station 1 with the die right at the shellplate at full stroke, with case measured in the middle @ .375 and the bottom of the case near the grove is around .383. Station is charging consistantly while flaring to the low .390's. Station 4 is seating to 1.125 and station5 crimp is around .393. Is this slight bulge normal and if not what do you think is causing it? I shot a small batch (30 rounds) and the all fed and ejected fine in my XDM 5.25 and chronod. At an average of 883 fps. Thanks in advance for your help...you guys have been awesome so far answering my questions.
  23. I just finished setting up my press and I'm not sure how much to crimp the case after seating bullet. The manual wasn't very clear on this.
  24. Thanks. Thats what I did but I just wanted to make make sure. I set up all the dies in order starting with station 1, so all the other stations were full when I got to station 5(seating).
