My dad has a remington speedmaster 552 that my mom bought him when they got married. It hasn't been shot in 10 years at least. It had 10 rounds in it from back then, which have now been removed because they looked terrible. So, I want to get it cleaned and in firing condition for xmas. I've barely touched it before, let alone taken it apart and put it together. So, should I clean it myself, or take it to a gun store and have it detailed? I don't want to mess it up. So, suggestions?

I'm not sure where to put this, so here it is. Do you think there is a need for a Shooter's Blog? I don't know much, because I just started 2-3 weeks ago. That's why I want to start it. I didn't find a lot out there for the pure beginner. I had to google and read one thing, but then look for clarifications on what they were talking about. I want to be able to save some time for the other newbies like me and try to make it a little bit easier for them. If I do start it, should I post about it here? Or maybe a different forum? Is it a dumb idea?

Hi guys. I wasn't sure if this should go to the BEginners section or the handgun section, but since it's for a handgun, here I am. I have a Glock 34. I keep my trigger hand as high on the grip as I can. But I'm not sure how to position the rest of my hand. Should I wrap my fingers as far around as they can go? Or, a bit back? Maybe in the middle? The thing that changes most is where my index finger lands. If I wrap it as far as I can, my finger lands on the trigger at the first joint. I have been trying to keep the tip of my finger on the trigger. Should I try to keep it right at the tip, or try to hit the trigger between the tip and the joint? Also, I am trying to pull the trigger from as low as I can get my finger. Is that about right? I think a lot of this is personal preference. But, I don't really know. Any thoughts?

I have a gen 4 G34. The first time I shot it I got a few black marks on my forehead from the casings. A few hit my glasses. It was really annoying. Afterwards I watched Matt Burkett's training video and I learned my grip was terrible. I got a real grip going and went out again yesterday. Not one shell to the head. However, I did notice one weird thing. About 85-90% of the time the casings went to the right out of the gun. A few would pop up almost straight in the air. They wouldn't hit me, but they would come down in front of my face. It's better than before, but I figure it must be something weird with the Gen4. I'll be getting a guide rod with a lighter spring and be testing that out later this week. I also will be going to the Vegas GSSF match in january. They will apparently check it out and upgrade to the latest parts if you don't already have them (Stock obviously). Can't wait!

Well, if you want you can post here, or PM me everything you can think of that it did, and anything that you can think of that you would want it to do. I'll see how doable it is. If it's something I can whip up in a couple of nights I'll go for it and post it up here.

Glockster35: Did you find the one you want? What do you want it to do? I could probably set something up pretty fast for you. I may iOS apps in my spare time, and I can also put them on the net, or a download to your mac or pc. If anyone had ideas on what they want a dry fire practice program to do for you please just let me know. I'm still a new shooter, so I don't know a lot about training programs. But, I do know about programming, so I may be able to set you up.

Thanks again guys. I just got my g34. Shot about 150 rounds. Whew. That was a lot of fun. I have a list and I'll have to start checking some prices for all of this.

My Rx glasses are about average size. Not the really short ones I see people have. One range I went to here said that my glasses were fine, where as the other said I needed to wear their bigger ones over mine. So, I should probably have a pair just in case. I would rather be the one that has whats needed, than to have to ask. I'm always early, and I always come prepared. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands or specific items in any of the categories? I don't have any experience with any of them. So, knowing before I go and spend the cash would help me narrow the choices down. It would also help to avoid the brands that are poor quality but look nice. Or steer towards the brands that may not seem as good as they actually are. For some things I have found an overwhelming support for one brand or another. For glocks, the vast majority of people say replace the sights first, and do use a set of TruGlo fiber optics. It's pretty easy to see that if almost everyone says it's good, it's a great place to start. I'm just looking to get a better bang for my buck, because the person behind the counter isn't the one that has to use the gear. They just want to sell it. That's how most retail places are though.

Ah yes. When I said 2-4, i meant 2-4 aside from the one you load. So I should have said 3-5. However, do you really think a new shooter should start off reloading? I'm just trying to get a list of the stuff I'll need for practice and my first match. Thanks everyone for the fantastic help. =D

I thought about eye protection while I was typing the hearing and forgot to add it as well. That brings up another point. I wear glasses, but cant afford to get Rx glasses just for this right now, as I am just starting. Does anyone have any thoughts on a good pair that can go over my glasses without falling off that isn't too expensive?
