Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. So for some reason i thought it would be a good idea have a "real" gun and not just Open racers. First of all, damn it's hard to hit anything with iron sights. Respect to all you non-open shooters who manage to hit anything with such ancient aiming-device.. Now to my question. I want to install a thumb rest but I'm unsure if there's anything to tap other than plastic in the dustcover, so.. is there? I've seen cmores mounted but are the holes for those just drilled and tapped or do you have to do it some other way? /jake
  2. I'm running one thundercomp in my 9major and on in my 38super but i've mostly fed both fith 9M. The comp is very light compared to my old ones and you realize how much a heavy comp actually reduces recoil. The Thundercomp needs quite a lot of punch to work. I'm loading 9M with 7.8grains vv3n37 just short of 30mm oal giving me about 165pf. I would say that is way soft loads for this comp. 175 should do it but i'm not sure I want to load that hot 9's. I haven't had the chance to try the Akai comp yet since it needs some cutting on the underside to allow for clearance for the guiderod and I haven't gotten to get that cut yet. I have no holes in any of my guns atm. I am afraid that I would loose too much gas too early to make major with safe presure but maybe I'm just paranoid
  3. Don't worry about the thundecomp II being heavy. It weighs 90 grams (google says thats about 3.17 ounces) and isn't very long. There's not much material in it so i guess that's what make it so light. Here's a size comparison between the thundercomp II, Akai comp, and some old random comps. The akai comp has a EGW cone attached. The one to the right that i replaced with the thundercomp weighs 50grams more (almost 50% heavier). The thundercomp II feels feather light
  4. I built this a couple of years ago. It was my first 1911 project ever. It was intended as a minor IPSC Standard gun in 9x19 but later on I rebuild it to an open gun running 9x19Major. Novling barrel, STI frame, mixed internals and Caspian frame.
  5. Thanks Bamboo. I tried contacting Caspian about the frame but they never replied on my emails. Since i don't live in the US i decided that it would be easier just to try to get i fixed locally (and i kind of like the challenge to get the original frame back "online"). At the moment i run the ancient original capsian magazines with fresh springs, followers and EGW bottoms. I intend to buy a couple of 29+1 Tanfoglio widebody magazinzes for it later. The magreleasenotch needs to be adjusted on them but that sholdn't be a problem.
  6. Bought an old Caspian some time ago. It had exploded many years ago and had an SPS slide on it. Fixed it up pretty good. Did a trigger job and the trigger is exactly the way i want it now. I reshaped the grip safety quite a bit and molded very thin side plates. The frame is a gen1 caspian and had the typical cracks at the trigger slots but i managed to find a very skilled welder that fixed it for me. Also reshaped the frame a bit to fit my hand better. Replaced all worn parts, put on a 90deg mount and magwell, and coated it with duracoat. Also refitted the slide as it did have a bit of rattle. it shoots and feels great now Didn't manage to drill and tap the magrelease. I have never encountered a harder metal than the one in that caspian magrelease.... I intend to have this as a backup gun and my other homebrew as primary. Although this one is chambered in .38super i used 9mm extractor and ejector and run 9x19 through it. Even with a the waaaay too long chamber and wrong breachface, it hasn't jammed with 9x19 yet.
  7. Ah ok, like an STS , fastfire etc lens. Now i get it I guess you could still have a fairly large lens slightly flattened at the bottom. One cool thing with this system, from what i could make out of the image, is that i guess it could be completely modular, allowing for lenschanges and different shapes if so desired.
  8. I shot the gun and sight at the NW Multigun and it was awesome. Going to shoot a local 3 gun in a few weeks. Busy talking with optics suppliers and updating the design. How about a rectangle or square shape lens to bring the dot lower? When you think about it, how would that make the dot lower?
  9. Keep in mind that an M&P with Apex internals is nolonger production legal for IPSC/USPSA (last time i checked the rules at least) A really nice production gun, imo, is the Tanfoglio Stock III. With available production legal springs you can get a really nice triggerpull on it and the balance is great.
  10. Thanks for the answers! Yeah, a backup gun would be ideal, but a broken extractor or firing pin takes 2 minutes to replace. I think the backup needs to be similar to your primary in IPSC (?) so I guess you'd more or less have to go all in on the backup as well, meaning I could not have a Glock 17 as backup just so I could finish the competition, right? In Sweden we need to import all parts to get the price down and even then it's a lot more expensive here than in the US (STI Trubor in 9x19 costs 4452.09 USD). At this time I could not justify having two expensive open guns so I'll have to run with spare parts for the time being at least. I am unsure what parts/tools to have with me though, as I never had anything break or malfunction on my gun yet
  11. Last year I built an Open-gun based on the STI 2011 frame, caspian frame and some other random parts. The thing is I don't have a single spare part for it. The only thing I have is a couple of shockbuffs and an assortment of springs in different weights. Yesterday one of my friends broke the slide stop on his Eagle/Trubor. The gun worked but shot high and then it started jamming until he noticed the slide stop was broken. This got me thinking, if I travel a day to get to a competition and spend god knows how much cash on hotels and all of that, it would really REALLY suck to have to go home early if I broke an extractor or something. So my questions to you are: 1. What spare parts do bring along for a big competition, including parts for the C-More, magazine parts, gear parts etc. A complete spare gun is not an option in my case. 2. What tools do you bring, including cleaning products, loctite etc? Right now I'm just hoping the thing will hold together. Haven't had a problem with it yet, but then again I've only shot about 3-4k rounds with it. /jake
  12. Another one from Sweden joining these forums! I've been shooting IPSC a couple of yeara and will start shooting in the Open division next season. I enjoy shooting, gunsmithing, reloading and everything that has to do with this sport. Looking forward to participating in the discussions here. /jake
