  1. Some Magpul furniture for my M&P15 carbine: MOE handguards, MOE+ grip, CTR stock, and PMAGs with windows (all foliage green). I call it the "Carbine Christmas." M&P Pro 9mm 5" barrel on backorder Nordic and Briley stuff for my shotguns.
  2. I was thinking about getting a barrel just like that for my SuperNova. It's 24" now. The rifle sights did worry me until your post. I still have some considerations to ponder. Thank you for the rapid response!! Novas have a mid bead, right? I'd just use the 24, the vent rib is awesome and the mid bead can be used pretty effectively as a rear sight for slugs. My SuperNova has a mid-bead, yes. You raise a good point. Thank you.

  4. For the WW2 Division shotgun stages, will we need to have chokes? Or will a "classic" pump gun with 18" barrel and cylinder bore be enough? I was thinking the stages would have been designed with the cylinder bore barrels in mind, but figured I should confirm. If I can get line-of-sight to the right gear, I'll put in my registration for WW2 and buy it all between now and the match. Thanks! -- Mike PS -- nobody tell my wife.....she's gonna FLIP.
  5. I need to be a member of a CMP registered/affiliated club to order one of these? I may be wrong, but I believe USPSA membership qualifies you. All of the criteria are listed on the site. It's a fairly easy process, and CMP will ship the rifle DIRECT to you. No FFL. I've been prowling their site for more information. I'll get educated fast. Thank you very much for the direction.

  7. OK, some of you may think it's a little crazy since I'm a newbie. But I've always had an interest in the M1 Garand. I've been an avid amateur World War II history reader since I was a boy. The M1 is nothing less than iconic to me. There are a few slots left for the Texas Multigun match in 2012, but they are almost gone. I'm interested in WW2 Division. I've got the pump shotgun and buying a single stack 1911 .45 ACP is easy (probably Springfield Range Officer). My BIG hang up is the M1. Except for a 1980s clone of an M1 Carbine, all my firearms time is on current production guns. Where should I be looking for a good value on the M1 Garand? What are "crash landings" for an older rifle? What are fair prices? Anyone have opinions on the Fulton Armory rifles sold today? What questions would I have asked beyond these? I don't want to break the bank too badly, but don't want to be disappointed my going too "cheap" either. I may suck with the rifle since my skills need work. But I think it will be such fun to be part of that division at the match that I won't care. Patrick and Bryan will be there for goodness sake! Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I'd rather not wait a full year for the next one! Thank you all, Mike
  8. Hi Pete, I'm a new member up near Winston-Salem. I've found the forum to be very informative in a short time. I hope you continue to gain from the community, contribute, and enjoy the shooting sports. -- Mike
  9. I'll be making a couple of inquiries with Briley and Nordic tomorrow. Meanwhile, I just ordered a few cheap upgrades to my M&P15 Sport. Might actually make it into a nice gun. I'm moving ahead on all fronts. Should have some time to train with everything before the match in January.
  10. I don't have any experience that would help you. But, I wanted to say "good for you" on the WW2 Division entry!! I think that is excellent and wish you the very best. I'm a little jealous, actually. If I had the gear I would have signed up already.
  11. I'll get some pics once I get some mods on mine. An owners group seems like a good idea to me. What is the "shortest" way to get 8+1 capacity? Do the Nordic +3 tube and then get the 3/4" cap? Go all the way to the +4 tube from the start? I don't mind the moderate extra cost of the +3 then cap if that combo gives the capacity with less length than the +4 alone. What about the NC clamp? I recall reading that someone had problems with it not fitting on the CZ? I was considering Briley for the magazine extension but it seems they only do 5+1, 7+1 and 9+1 from what I read on their site. Maybe that's only 3" shells, not the 2 3/4"? I'm trying to keep the mag tube end as close to the muzzle as possible. I will order a couple of Briley extended chokes tomorrow to give the barrel an extra inch. Hopefully, I can take this for a test drive at my local indoor range tomorrow or Saturday.
  12. Mine was a floor demo with minor cosmetic stuff on the left of the receiver. You have to hold it just right in the light to see it. I'll probably do that much damage my first couple of matches! $299 for mine. Never fired from what I can see. I didn't get a manual, box, or more than the IC choke in it, but that's fine. One download later I have the manual. I'll order an extended choke to better match up to the upcoming magazine extension tube. Seems we may be forming a new club of CZ 712 Utility owners here soon. Bur first, I need to get the magazine limiter out somehow......
  13. Kirk, thanks for the offer of support! I expect I'll take you up on that. Today I got my CZ 712 Utility and my Benelli SuperNova 24" I want to mod them and be ready for my first match in January. -- Mike
  14. OK, here is an update to my thinking and planning. Pump will very likely be a SuperNova in 24". A gun store in my region has one in stock for only $100 more than I see Novas going out the door. Given my time constraints and newness to most of this I will take an incremental approach to semi-autos: For 3-gun Tactical Irons or Optics I'm looking at a floor demo of a CZ-712 Utility. Could get it for about $300. Then get an extension as a first mod and go from there. But it would be a dedicated 3-gun rig. For other shotgun-only sports, I'd take my time, learn more, and buy whatever fits my needs after I know more about what sports I'll be shooting. I appreciate the replies here as well as another thread about the CZ in particular. Wonderful forum and thankful to be here.
  15. OK, then I may have a plan for my first semi-auto shotgun. Thanks again!
  16. Ryan, Thank you very much for the quick response. What would be the best tool or tools to perform this task? Perhaps someone new to the sport like me should consider a local gunsmith?
  17. Not to be ignorant, but you have to remove metal on the factory magazine tube to ensure proper function of an extension? Despite my degree in engineering, I'm not sure my metalworking skills would be up for that.
  18. Thank you. My biggest concern was all the different positions for safeties. Some in front of trigger guard, some behind. I didn't want to have disjointed muscle memory. If I ignore the semi-auto purchase, I've been partial to Benelli Nova and SuperNova for pump guns. The Novas I've held have seemed comfortable overall. I like the features of those guns and even more so the features in the SuperNova (e.g., ComfortTech). Probably grab a 24" synthetic SuperNova Field, Briley extension to 8 in the tube, and 'drive on'. That would get me 'in the door' for 3-gun. I'd get beat up by Tactical Irons shooters with 9mm instead of .45 and semis instead of pumps, but who cares. Not to mention I think I royally *suck* with irons on my rifles as a beginner! At least I'd be in the game and getting experience. I have much more experience with pistols of many patterns and calibers. Learning will be fun too.
  19. I neglected to mention that the Durham club monthly match rules restrict shotguns to either 22 or 24 inch barrels. Their documents are in conflict with each other (one says 22" the other 24" maximum. Otherwise, I might have settled on the SX3 in 26" and the SXP in 26"......or the Benelli pairing. Either way, I think I might have figured this out by now without the barrel length restrictions. Who knows..... Durham is probably the closest regular match to my home. Thank you for the responses, thus far.
  20. Remington's web site (unlinkable since I'm a new member? interesting.....) calls out this as one of the VersaMax features: "Versaport™ gas system regulates cycling pressure based on shell length" This would seem to be a gas-operated action. The Versaport system allows different numbers of gas ports to be unobstructed based on shell length, according to their product video. I don't own one of these, but I've been looking at one for purchase.
  21. Hello Everyone, I hope I haven't missed something obvious in the forum searches. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and haven't quite got all my shotgun needs figured out. Let me explain my background and needs. Then I welcome all your input and comments on my ideas. My only prior experience with shotguns was rental Remington 870s at Edwards AFB Rod & Gun activity (1993-94). I had a great deal of fun shooting trap in day and night time. Whatever I end up getting now, I want to be able to do that as well as do recreational sporting clays on formal clays courses. Plus, obviously since I'm posting here, I want to be eligible to compete in one or two divisions in 3-gun. No hunting would be in the mix in the future. That's simply not my thing. I do not own a shotgun and have never owned one before. I currently have a S&W M&P 45 full-size and S&W M&P15 Sport AR (I wanted something inexpensive that chambered 5.56mm just to have around). But I hope to get a 7.62mm rifle soon. I'll make a separate post over in the rifle forum for that. OK, so that implies shotgun(s) for trap, sporting clays, 3-Gun Tactical and Heavy Metal. I'll need one semi-auto and one pump, at the least. As much as possible, I want to keep the gun operations as similar as possible. I won't have tons of time to practice with disparate weapons systems. One idea I had was Winchester SX3 with a 28" barrel for clay games and a 24" or 22" barrel for 3-gun. I'd get a Briley extension tube. But would the Winchester SXP be a good pump compared to a Benelli SuperNova? Another idea is do a Benelli pair like an M2 Field plus SuperNova. I'd have to get the extra barrel for the M2, no problem I suppose. Could be more expensive than the Winchester pairing above. Likewise, I could do a Remington pair (1100 or VersaMax plus 870?) A last, odd couple, could be a Vinci in 24" and 28", hope that a third-party extension tube comes along in early 2012 and match it up with a SuperNova. The trigger guard and safety layouts look fairly similar. The Vinci seems interesting to me. I want to "get it right" the first time and not have to trade out stuff later on. But it's made difficult by my lack of shotgun experience. So, for someone that wants to do clay games, 3-gun tactical, and 3-gun HM how would you recommend I approach this? Would I be better served by three shotguns over time? Seems expensive, but I'm open to knowledgeable feedback and opinions. Thank you all in advance for your assistance and patience with yet another newbie to 3 gun. This set of forums is great, so far. Best Regards, Mike
  22. Would you happen to know the model # you ordered? My invoice shows (M930 BBLASM 24DR PRTD SS-FULL Matte) $180.00 two extra chokes were $15.75 Each Has front and rear fiber optic sights Is it ported or non-ported? Give the "PRTD" in the invoice line item, I'm betting it is ported. I bet you think the same. But naturally, we should hear back from the actual barrel owner to be sure.
  23. Unfortunately, I don't have a shotgun yet. All I have for 3-gun is my M&P .45 full size and my cheap M&P15 sport rifle. But I agree with your philosophy of doing a couple of matches before making a big investment. Thanks.
  24. Looks like 10 December for next month's match. I've been meaning to get started in 3-gun so I will try to pull my equipment together and get registered. Check out the requirements on shotgun barrel length at their web site. I read it as 22" maximum. That was a surprise. Glad I looked because I was planning to get a 26" Winchester SXP. If I go the SXP route, I had better get the Camp/Field combo they made for Shot Show this year. Now what to get for my 7.62mm rifle.... Decisions decisions.....Sucks being a newbie!! PS -- even if I don't get all the right gear, I think I should go and watch to learn more. :-)
