  1. Does anyone use the Ruger American Rifle in PRS? I was assuming a Chassis would be the first upgrade.

You might consider a Ruger Precision Rifle in 243 Winchester as an alternative. Those are going for $999 on places like Gunbroker.com now. They seem to be the least loved of the three RPR models. Handload a 105/107 grain bullet with a slow powder like H1000 or IMR 7977 and perhaps you'll be there right out of the box? Personally, I'm considering this myself and dumping the Samson handguard for longer 18" Midwest Industries. actually, I have a project that could use the Samson 15" to better effect. Hmmm, now that's some serious economy. Anyway, I thought you might want to consider this alternative course of action.

  2. I agree that the 500 yard target on the boat was a challenge. I kinda used the Force to determine where I thought it was and sent it. When they said it hit, I sent another to the same spot in the grass.

  3. Very true about that young man with the RPR. He was doing a solid job every stage. Thanks again for the fantastic opportunity yesterday. I made up for Stage 1 with that truly awful Stage 2, remember? All about learning from my mistakes!

  4. How did you guys do yesterday? The wind got pretty strong in the afternoon.

Scores won't post until tomorrow, from what I understand and the format involved some time and then add on time for this and that. My focus was on being safe, being consistent, and making hits....in that order. I always succeeded in #1, got better with #2 as the day went on, and managed hits on all stages. Well I might have had one of eight stages that was all misses. I don't think Steve got everything out of it that he was expecting.

Wind later in the day was very strong and extremely variable. Holding for wind at longer ranges would have required a significant change from shot to shot. In the afternoon I could sometimes see the splash on one side at one target then edge over the cross hairs to another neighboring target at the same distance and see the splash on the opposite side of the plate. So, we were getting large wind changes on the order of 7-10 second time scales. Toward the end of the day, on stage 7, I timed out only able to make 8 of 10 shots. But, all 8 were hits. B) I was setting up on the 800 yard target when time expired. I could have made the hit if another 2 seconds were on the clock to make the shot.

Steve's rifle was a sweet shooting stick. He had a nice rifle built right there. His hand loads for me were dialed in perfectly. Also, he was very generous to let me try the sport with his gear. He rolled out the red carpet for me in many ways. And it's always fun to shoot with him. I can't thank him enough.

Finally, the experience was very educational. I saw many different rifles and calibers in play. Multiple optics and ammunition choices. Finally, seeing my actual skill level helps me make informed choices about rifle and other equipment if I were to go forward with this in the future.

  5. Years ago the AMU tried Tubb CWS in their service rifles. The found that they did nothing so i'm skeptical about accuracy increases and my own use was similar, my guns shot the same. What the heavy mass of a carrier does do is retard bolt velocity. In an AR platform, if you run the bolt too fast you can get extractor marks on the brass or even tear the rims off when pressures get high. Or to state it another way, in an AR the bolt speed becomes the limiting factor before the primers start to go. As such, if you can slow the bolt down a little, the cases handle pressure better.

When you compare one carrier to another its a little bit of an apples to oranges unless your using the same bolt.

Seems like it just lets the case pressure reduce some amount more before the extraction process begins. That's all that I'm hearing from users.

  6. Here you go Michael. Hornady 140 bthpm, 42.2 gr of H4350, primer pockets trued, flash holes deburred, and they are ready to rock and roll. This batch is yours. The bad thing is that I am slap out of H4350. The worse news is that everyone is out of it. Went to Bass pro shop as a last resort. They didn't have any, but they did have 4451, but they are freaking price gouging! I bought it because I had to have it, but this is just wrong. I would not have guessed that a large retailer like that, who buys in bulk, and surely gets a good price, would be raping their customers, and if they are doing it on powder, how much other stuff are they killing people on? Never again Bass Pro, never again.attachicon.gifimage.jpeg

They look beautiful!! Thank you, sir.

    Looking forward to the 14th.

  7. In the scenario I mentioned above, the constant was the rifle length gas system and the buffer weight and spring tension. The variables were the carrier mass and adjusting the gas to suit the carrier mass/ buffer weight/ spring tension. Basically isolating for what difference carrier mass can make to lock time while all else remained the same and the results I had were significant.

Understood. Thank you. This has been very informative and helpful.

  8. Just trying to get some advice on AR sights for a shtf AR.

How would a variable power illuminated 1-4 scope stand up against other sights, red dots, holo sights pros-cons etc.

My Viper PST is not exactly daylight visible in the desert here, but on the flip side, it does have some magnification (and some weight...) don't know anything about how rugged it is.

Wondering if there are much better choices when the zombies (lol) coming.

While I am aware that this is not a "prepper" forum, and my thread might get locked, but I am also aware that there are a lot of knowledgeable person here who does know a thing or two...

    thanks,

My personal experience with a Viper PST 1-4x in shoot houses and out to 400 yards is that it seems like a great scope for that wide range of engagements. Seemed very fast in CQB style shooting and my squadmates thought so also. I have doubts about needing illumination for many situations, but that is only my guess and probably not worth much.

  9. I, for one, and thankful Mark has been promoting the Stretch16 barrels. Built a new rifle for this season based on his feedback and took it out for its first match since I last shot in Oct ...

To say I'm thrilled is an understatement

Looks like you've got that dialed in nice and smooth.

  10. I just learned that lock time isn't only effected by bolt mass.... long story aside, the actual gas system length effects how long it takes before gas hits your bolt. The longer the gas system the longer the lock time....

Also adjustable gas, preventing over gassing which can effect bolt velocity and lock time... You want the least amount of gas needed to get the gun to run reliably and repeatable.

Then you bolt+carrier mass and the spring tension behind it... object in motion stays in motion and object at rest stays at rest...

I'm not the best at articulation, so maybe someone can explain it a little better than I just did.

Certainly that wouldn't be the only factor, no. Gas system length is definitely a big factor, then other system factors to a lesser extent. I appreciate the comments. Thank you.

  11. Alright, Michael and I are in and on squad b for Saturday.

That's right. :-) The adventure begins for me. Thank you, Steve. You are a heck of a friend to share like this.

  12. One more small detail, if you outshoot me with my own rifle I'm going to be pissed.

Yeah, right. That can't happen! Not possible. If it does happen, I need to buy lottery tickets immediately that day!

  13. Had a great day at the range with my new 6.5 Creedmoor.

The Hornady 140 ElDX, Winchester 140 match and Hornady 140 Amax all shot one ragged hole groups (and I am out of practice for shooting tiny groups) and all impacted within an overall 1/2 group.

First round hits out to 1k

    I am digging this rifle.

Sounds like a sweet shooter. Congratulations!

  14. Miculek comp is on my Top 3 S**t list for overly noisy muzzle devices. I believe users when they say it is mechanically effective. But, I hate being anywhere near them. Even many users report they hear it more from their position operating the rifle, also. Knowing that all of us can do better for our hearing while still being as mechanically effective means we should strongly consider the alternatives. Simple is fine. Just make sure they are more modern designs that actually use fluid mechanics knowledge in the process.

  15. OK guys, not to highjack the thread, but finances are much worse than might be expected. I can't do/initiate anything for the next few months. The 6.5 Grendel barrel was an unexpected gift, but I still have to wait on a bolt, gas block, etc. because of money. I do appreciate the support and enthusiasm, but my hands are tied. Things might break my way in the next couple of months, so keep those fingers crossed, etc.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled thread.

The comment about different ammo available more widely in 6.5 Creedmoor is another positive point to bring out. Prime ammo and Gorilla ammo may alleviate that imbalance to some extent with their 260 Rem offerings, but they are pricey.

  16. I also think that, by a small degree, the 6.5 Creedmoor loses less case volume to 140 grain class bullets than the 260 Remington.

How is that? The creed is a smaller case, or an I thinking wrong?

It is certainly a tad shorter, but I don't think the case volume is that much less without bullet. Then once you factor in intrusion from the larger bullet into the 260 volume *and* the difference in operating pressures, I think the 6.5 comes out at least even. Plus, it can fit easier in a magazine. Ballistically, very similar performance but can handle longer/heavier bullets a little better. Since I lean more toward semi-auots, I lean more toward 6.5 Creedmoor. But I don't talk crap about anybody picking a 260 Remington. The differences are subtle, to my eye.
