Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I'm using a Hamden 5-1/2" Victor, I took the barrel weight off for faster transitions. I have one of the Al Marvel scope bases for it, I may try a reflex sight on it yet.
  2. Lots of Rugers and Browning Buckmarks on the range I shoot at. A few M41's thrown in too. One or 2 1911 conversions. Me? I use an old Hi Standard. If I were to build a SS gun it would be based on a Ruger MKII.
  3. OK so what do you call each set of targets within a stage? Say you have 3 paper and 2 plate targets, you shoot this (set?) and move to the next (set?)
  4. Here's a link to an active Contender forum. Scroll down: http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php
  5. 4 stages at 2 clubs I shoot at, matches held once a month. There's a weekly 2-stage shoot but I'm working during that time.
  6. 4.3gr is the MAX Hodgdon lists on their website for a 200gr bullet. And I've heard Clays has a very steep pressure curve if you try to exceed the maximum loads. Are you sure about your chronograph? Can you compare your rounds with another one? You say you're weighing each powder charge? What scale are you using? Does it return to zero each time, and do you have any check weights? Dropping the OAL to 1.22" will help if it'll feed at that length.
  7. OK, the "duplicate the factory originals" would rule it out. It still may be a fun project though. Thanks.
  8. OK, so I'm getting a wild hair up my --- for something non-standard in a 1911, either a 45/40 (400 Cor Bon) or 45/38 (Clerke.) Would this be legal for Single Stack, or would I be in Limited or L-10?
  9. Interesting - I have a TRP and run a Wilson shock buff. No issues feeding cast 200gr SWC's and the only other problem is it won't lock the slide half the time shooting light target loads. Mid-range or full house loads run fine. I'm running CM 8-round Power mags and may order some 10-rounders since Midway has them on sale.
  10. Welcome from Rochester! Some people still can't believe us NY shooters can have handguns.
  11. I've had good luck with the "soft" Mastercast bullets: http://www.mastercastbullets.com/home.html Are you stuck on 230gr bullets? I run 200gr SWC's but just ordered some 200gr RN's to try in a stock Colt Government. I don't use Clays but I've heard it has a steep pressure curve - a small charge increase can lead to a major pressure increase. I use W231 / HP38 but got a deal on some Unique I couldn't pass up. WST is reported to be a good choice and clean burning also. Of course OF's like me also run Bullseye....... Do you need to make Major PF, or are you looking for target loads? I have a 16# spring in my 1911 and it'll function at a pretty low loading. Shock buffs go on the recoil spring guide before you put the spring on. They should be inspected every time you field strip the gun. But - if a buffer shreds on you it can tie up the gun. Lots of guys won't use one on their carry gun. And they may not let the slide move to the rear far enough especially on a 3" or 4" gun.
  12. I was at the range and 2 guys next to me shot off 5 boxes of WWB 45ACP. They swept it up and were headed for the garbage can when I said "'Scuz me, you gonna throw that out?" 200+ more cases for me!
  13. NFW am I going to run anything more abrasive than JB compound down any of my bores. YMMV.
  14. My brass gets tumbled every time I shoot it. Getting the dirt off saves the dies. For grungy range pickup stuff the procedure is more involved. I deprime 45 cases with a 44 Mag expander die with a decapper pin (the die is big enough so the brass isn't resized.) Then I boil them in a water / salt / vinegar solution to get the crud out. Rinse, dry, inspect, the they go into the "to be tumbled" bucket along with my regular brass.
