  1. If anyone ever won every stage at a Nationals, it was prior to 1989. Can't remember less than 3 people winning stages at any national match since then.
  2. So if I understand correctly, let's say the shooter rx is -4.0 both eyes. You say that the glasses would result in experiencing a net rx of -3.25 right and -4.25 left, yes? You would experience that if the lenses are MADE -3.25 right and -4.25 left. Result for shooting would be great if like me, you get the sharpest reading vision using a +1.0 set of reading glasses (which you can try at the drug store). The more Add power you need at reading distance, the more change from your shooting-eye distance vision number you'll need. I'd briefly mention that if you get an optometrist that will work with you and not just push buttons, click wheels, and say "better, or worse?", you can get some amazing results with whatever vision need you seek to gain from a particular pair of glasses (long version would go 5 paragraphs).
  3. Starting next week I'll be a VA pharmacist in our favorite city in the USA. For at least 6 years I've been engineering my job experience to land this gig and it paid off. Now I can watch the tourists & smile like a native. Grateful for all the opportunities I was denied because it all worked out perfectly, 21 job interviews later. Adding my service in the Navy, a full retirement is now 14 years away.
  4. I went from a vertical frame-mount C-More to a slide-mounted Docter sight, then back to a frame-mounted sight. I can definitely track the dot better with the frame mounts. Right now I have an RTS2 on a Cheely mount. Probably the best of both worlds. If I had to pick a 2nd option it would be a sideways frame-mounted big C-More but I have not owned one, just fired a mag or 2 through other people's guns.
  5. When the rules were changed in Limited division for 2013, I dreamed up what was at the time probably the wildest departure from the old rules. I wanted Matt Cheely to be the builder all along. I'd tracked his progress as an Engineering graduate and as an apprentice 1911 gunsmith so for me it was an easy choice who to throw my money at. Matt liked the Limited gun plan. He put his own spin on it. He gave me a small discount for creativity/craziness. There was a minor problem in the finished gun that neither of us anticipated. It took 2 tweaks on the design for Matt to bring it up to perfect. None of that cost me a dime. Then I had Matt re-blue my Open gun. He decided he didn't 100% love the color match. Didn't charge me for it. If that sounds like a guy you want to work with and a gun you're willing to wait for, just do it. No one is better.
  6. I've tried both VZ and DAA thick as well as Tyc-model thick aluminum (with tape) from CZ and several wood grips. In my opinion these beat all of them; put small strips of grip tape at the top and bottom, let your hands get used to them, and your good to go: http://www.shootingsportsinnovations.com/CZ-SCALES-BLACK-CZBLK001.htm PS: if anyone wants a Shark Fin (same company) for 2011, let me know. Great part but my hands are too big to make a good fit.
  7. Good job reviewing this gun and good job hitting the targets Patrick. I really can't justify having an X-cal but will likely buy one anyway.
  8. Small changes like overall length or crimp or going up 2 tenths in charge may alter the flame ball effect. If you swipe your comp chambers with oil it will for sure keep your comp more clean and might help expel the unburned powder which is the source of the fireballs. N105 is even louder, shot indoors it can induce heart attacks.
  9. It's a luck thing based on the number, shape, and location of your comp chambers and any porting holes. Another brand of bullet may travel down your barrel just enough differently to reduce or get rid of the flame balls. If you settle on another powder, you should have no problem selling your remaining 3n38 unless you live somewhere very remote. If you're in Central FL, I'll buy it. My favorite Open powders are my hoarded Vectan SP2, then 3n38, then HS6. The HS6 really shines with 115 grain bullets.
  10. His custom-made mag pouches placing the top round on top.
  11. If George built it, then someone will still be shooting it 25 years from now.
  12. My wife restores vintage furniture with a technique a lot like you're describing. Never once did I think of doing that with a gun. It looks very very good.
  13. EAA has a tradition of terrible customer service, overpriced spare parts with a terrible selection. Henning Walgren does his best to support us, but he has only a few parts available. On the other hand, Stuart Wong at CZ Custom is a great guy who frequents this forum and will take good care of you, plus CZ USA offers a good selection of factory parts at reasonable prices. If the pistols are the same price, but the CZ is new, take the CZ. ^this^
  14. To be (more) clear, the club authorities at Malabar decided there were enough things wrong with recent USPSA matches that they temporarily suspended the membership for some of the USPSA match administrators. I don't know all the details but the issue seemed to be about match set-up. It's a shame because the last match I went to was a blast. They are asking for volunteers to help run the matches which I'd love to do but for the last year I've worked every other weekend and even on my "free" Saturdays, I've typically arrived home from the hospital Friday midnight or later. March will free up somewhat so I'll do what I can to pitch in.
  15. Concerned that racking the slide quickly might lead to pushing down the safety and result in a dropped hammer and a dead trigger, like the Beretta 92. Do any of the models have a safety that at least springs back up? Is this a big deal, small deal, no problem? Maybe you could rack the gun from behind with a 2-finger 'claw' that keeps the safety levers up? I like the idea of hitting the decocker on the way to a pistol bucket in 3-Gun. No penalties.
  16. If you're really in love with the SP01 you could do the 'drop mag, rack slide' maneuver, adding maybe 1.0 to your time. Otherwise yeah, I can imagine the shag shifting on the pistol dump's rug remnant & that being enough put the Shadow off safe. With a G34 you'd just have to be sure your safety trigger pops forward. Some Glocks with the heavy trigger spring don't do that every time.
  17. I think there's more to be gained in Open with a thumb rest, compared to the other divisions. Recoil is mostly straight back, and hit factors are so high that you must trigger the gun faster than the other divisions. A good rest can help anchor the gun in all 3 directions using mostly the support hand, and allows the strong hand to relax more. I made my own. There are tons of threads on this topic if you search.
  18. In another thread, someone posted a picture showing the Jericho/IMI with a much bigger magwell than a Shadow. Am I right to assume that it's also noticeably bigger than a Stock II magwell? Is the IWI gun production-legal just like the IMI? Thanks!
  19. For 3GN and clubs with similar rules, all pistol starts are with an unloaded chamber so DA first shot is no factor, it isn't used. Having a nice big serrated slide surface to rack the first round in is a factor. So is being able to reliably, quickly safe the gun and dump it in one motion. For high mag capacity, low purchase cost & trigger-tuning cost, easy racking, and quickly dumping a safe gun, I like the P-09 with the decocker. I've only messed with one at a gun store but used the decocker several times: it's idiot-proof and falls right under my thumb. The Shadow and similar guns by contrast have ambi-safeties that can be very sloppy from side-side and require you to push the left side UP. I've tried (empty gun) to dump my Shadows at home using my trigger finger to hold the right-side lever up "just in case" and it doesn't reliably keep the gun safe, because of the parts slop.
  20. Not with the CZ (have two Shadows) and although I gave it a try, not with the STI guns either. Those tend to respond better to gripping the heck out of the bottom of the grip with strong hand pink/ring fingers, and gripping very hard, but neutral, into the left grip panel with the weak hand palm. The plastic guns it seemed like the frame flex got more noticeable, in a bad way, when I gripped them harder down near the magwell. The Vogel grip seemed to calm down the gun in a good way and a side benefit is the pressure from the entire thumb riding above the trigger area seemed to allow a much more aggressive triggering without upsetting the sight picture too much. And torque (from the bullet augering down the barrel) was more noticeable with plastic frames - also better controlled by rolling the hands in. With either grip style, you will see big improvements from using Captains of Crush grippers.
  21. jroback - Thanks for the review with the direct comparison between a gun I have and a gun I might buy - very helpful. I've also had good results using a Vogel type grip on polymer-frame guns. Something to do with concentrating gripping forces up near the center of mass? Whatever the reason, it seems to help settle things down to where only the slide is moving, not the whole gun.
