  1. I've got the FA and I had to have my son the electrician re-wire the motor once. The wires from the motor are not very durable. However I've cleaned thousands of rounds of brass and does a good job. I had the thumlers vibratory tumbler and it did a good job but not any better than the FA.
  2. I definately recommend the Gloxwork extended striker however I've seen many times where someone has lubed or allowed lube (from cleaning the breach face with a Hoppes soaked brush) into the striker channel. That will slow the striker down enough to get light primer strikes.
  3. I smoked a pork butt yesterday on the Big Green Egg. Took me 8 1/2 hours. I tried something different so it didn't turn out quite as good as I had hoped but pork butt is pretty hard to screw up. Bud Lite in the beer fridge. Probably have a Boulevard Wheat later when we go out to eat with the in-laws.
  4. I used to shoot IDPA then found 3 gun to be much more fun because of the lack of structure/rules. The rules didn't even let you point you finger at the target. With 3 gun you get a chance to rehearse the stage. Point is 3 gun is a game. Gaming is not only allowed, it's encouraged. Look at the spinner as a challenge and figure that part of the game out. I used to have problems with the spinner until I looked at it as part of the game and loaded for it. We have a #6 shot maximum for the stage however I've got a SBE and the 3 1/2" turkey loads really make her spin. When I hear people say something like "that's not real world" I laugh because 3 gun is a game, not training. Let's shoot the spinner and have some fun.
  5. What RPatton said. I like my black sights but with my older eyes I need that fiber optic to draw my vision to that sight. I can probably still shoot more accurately with the black sight post but not near as fast...and I'm not that fast anyway.
  6. One thing I learned the hard way is the striker channels should have zero lube in them. Any lube slows the striker down.
  7. Absolutely pull the bullets. I've seen squibs total a nice Smith 28 and a fairly new Nighthawk 1911. Luckily neither shooter was injured. If your "friend" is having trouble watching his powder level then he can get a device that warns you of low powder levels but the nice thing I like about the 550B is you can eyeball the powder in the case before topping it with a bullet. Best defense against squibs.
  8. You need to clean you're brass before you size it for sure or you will damage your dies. I use a vibratory with walnut hulls first then size and deprime before running it through my wet tumbler but you can buy a universal depriming die cheap that just knocks out the primer then you can wet tumble so the primer pockets are clean.
  9. Congrats to all those Kansas boys. Looks like you all had lots of fun.
  10. I use a sandbag to support my hands only. No part of the pistol touches the rest. I'm not the greatest pistol shooter but am able to get 3" to 4" groups at 25 yards this way and occasionally get a 2" group. I recently purchased a Frankenstein G17L. Has a Lonewolf barrel and slide and with my standard load I was getting 8-12" groups from a sandbag supporting the gun on the dust cover. After changing to using a sandbag to only support my hand the groups shrunk to 5-6". I read this thread today so got off my duff and tried my new loads and now I'm down to 2-4" at 25 yards. Had to seat the bullet closer to the lands. Point is to try different ways of supporting the pistol and see if it helps. Your mileage may vary.
  11. I've found that trying to support the front part of the lower end of a Glock with a rest causes erratic groups. I'd forgot this when I purchased a G17L and was getting similar groups but I played around with my support and started getting much better groups.
  12. I don't know how old you are but a wider rear sight allows for more light and as your eyes age more light is better. I can't remember what brand I'm using but I always get the wider rear sight.
  13. I've never had that problem. I just buy them then figure out what part of my budget goes without. I've done it many, many times over the years and seldom do I regret it.
  14. It sucks getting old. I've been under height, for my weight, most my life and it's caught up with me now that I'm trying to run and gun. The guys older than me tell me that if you stop moving, you die. Three gun is the physical challenge I need to push myself to get into shape to be competitive. It's my motivation but a full day of setting up, shooting then taking it all down is definately pushing my abilities...especially in the beat of summer. So far my only pain meds are some icy cold beers after I get home from the match.
  15. I find reloading enjoyable, especially pistol on my 550b but there are times that it's not that economical and for .223 it's getting close again on cost. I lose a lot of my brass at matches so by the time you add in brass cost then you're not saving much and prep on .223 brass is a PITA. With current cost of components it's .25-.28 cent a round reloaded and you can buy brass cased ammo here and there for $350-$375 per 1000 rounds. As labor intensive as it is for brass work it's not worth the savings. If you are able to recover most or all of your brass then you're saving another .07 a round.
  16. I sold some extra 9mm earlier this year at a fair price shipped and what a mistake. I knew shipping powder and primers was tough but didn't know ammo was that difficult. The guy that bought it recommended I just ship it USPS without telling them it was ammo but I'm not to take a chance getting caught and costing thousands of dollars in legal fees for a few bucks. That's just stupid. He was mad because UPS required him to be home to sign for it. I was mad because with the extra cost of the ORD shipping I lost money on the deal. I don't ship ammo anymore.
  17. I've never used the Atlas but have been plenty satified with the Harris. If you order one spend a few extra bucks and get a pod lock.
  18. The Federal AE223 always shot well but just after the last presidential election I decided to buy components because I could buy more for my money. Turned out to be a good idea however my handloads won't shoot as well as the Federal stuff did. My barrel is chambered for 5.56 so will shoot either fine.
  19. For the 18" go to White Oak Armament. Great barrels.
  20. Wanted to let every one know how great Burris cs is. I've been using my Tac30 for 2 years shooting 3 gun and never used the electronics. Moved to an XTR so was getting ready to sell this one and tried the red dot and and it wouldn't stay on so I sent it in and 9days later had a new Tac30. I know a lot of people say just buy the best then you won't have to deal with warranty but 3gun is expensive game to get started so the Tac 30 was all I could afford and it worked great. Good job Burris!
  21. I've had the Burris, LaRue and the JP. I'm going to keep my JPs and have sold the rest. The JP is built like a tank and has 5 screw holding the base to the rail. I like the way you place the scope in the rings like you would on a standard mount and I couldn't care less about quick detach for my 3gun rig. I don't wan't QD for my 3gun rig. Just more to go wrong at the wrong time. That being said the LaRue is a top notch mount too.
  22. I guess I can see how this could happen however I've been using mine now for the last 3 or 4 matches and it works great. Not only does it save you when you run dry it also allows you to carry a different load so when going from slugs to bird shot I can run my gun dry and load the one on the matchsaverz and I'm back to loading the gun from the bottom.
  23. I have a JP standard offset mount and it wasn't near enough. I use a old A2 stock which fits me well but puts my face farther forward. I also have a standard LaRue 104 and I had to place the mount clear to the front of the rail and it was barely enough and would have worked better hanging off the front of the rail. I ended up ordering a JP extended mount to get there. Haven't got it yet but it should be just fine. One of the other shooters that commented on this thread has a LaRue extended for his. You won't be able to get the full benefit of the great eye relief without the extended mounts. I think the JP is a 3" offset. I really like the JP mounts. they are built as solid as you could ever find and I see no need for a quick release on my 3gun optics. I don't plan on taking them off and on very often. The JP mount uses a really long clamping surface and isn't going anywhere.
  24. I've been shooting a SBEII in 3 gun for the last two years. It was my bird gun and starting 3gun I just couldn't afford another expensive gun so I shoot it. It ate everything I fed it the first year then started jamming occasionally when going from slugs or heavy shot to light loads. I've cleaned it thoroughly but it still jams once in awhile. I tried a reduced recoil spring and that didn't help so I went to a plus power spring and that has helped but I can't shoot the real light stuff in it. It ran last weekend in a match where I went thru 75 rounds of rem 7.5 1 1/8 shot 3 dram with one jam. I've ordered some rem nitro 1300 fps and hope to give them a try this weekend in a match. One problem, as someone else said , is lube and dirt tend to build up in the recoil spring tube slowing down the cycle. Keeping that clean is important. Getting the nut loose on the tube is a sob though. I've thought about trading for a m 2 but I like my sbe and the camo has been worn enough that I couldn't get enough out of it to make it worth it. Shoot it and have fun.
