  1. I have shot a few thousand Berrys and like them. But I have started buying Precision Delta FMJ as they cost less.
  2. I like Federals...in my light action revolvers and bolt action rifles. I get some of my best accuracy loads using Federals. But, I won't use them in ARs due to the floating firing pin, or the 1911/2011 platform, or anything where speed is involved. Why...I have yet to see a CCI, Rem, Win or Wolf ignite a primer due to a ground strike or impact with the ejector. With Federals, I have seen numerous cases of such. They are more "sensitive" and everything comes with a trade-off. Some will say this is overly cautious, so be it. I thought we were talking about reloading 45 PISTOL ammo. I don't think Federal primers are recommended for AR's
  3. You can easily see the difference. Try comparing a 9mm to a .45 and there you have it.......... Unless you happen to pick up a .45 with a small primer.
  4. Are you sure it's not getting flicked out when you index? I understand this can be a problem. There is a fix for that.
  5. I had problems using Winchester primers. They are hard and I had trouble getting them to seat fully. I now use Federal and have had no problems at all.
  6. YES! My friend ruined the barrel on a new XDm Comp .40 that way. He was getting progressively smaller powder charges using a Lee press. He did not realize it had happen until he was cleaning the gun later and found the barrel bulged. Looked like a snake that ate a rat!
  7. Well, to each His own. I've never had any problems and If I have to throw some away, no great loss. I would buy loaded bullets and save the brass before I would pay the prices I see for new brass. What ever works for you.
  8. This should be interesting. I will watch this thread and perhaps learn something. I have mostly figured out an OAL that worked for a given bullet (read profile or shape) and then tested different powder charges to see what seemed most accurate.
  9. I shoot at an indoor range and sweep up any brass laying around. I have accumulated thousands of 9mm. It is the most wildly used caliber. If you go to a gun show you should be able to buy used 9mm brass for $35. to $50. per thousand. Another idea is to ask at your local indoor range. They usually sell used brass that they sweep up. It matters not to me what brand. Only military brass with crimped primers cause a hiccup.
  10. I may be your brass in getting some sand or grit stuck to it and then it is going into the sizing die.
  11. I used 5/16" x 1 1/2" lag bolts with washers. Plenty strong enough.
  12. I had the same thing happening. The "lite" strikes are because the primer is not fully seated. I changed from Winchester primers to Federal. They are softer and will seat easier. Also I found that if I kept the alan wrench in the shell plate bolt and held it. I could Get it just right. I tighten up the screw in the shaft that holds the bolt from tightening and try the indexing star. (You do know about this screw?) If it binds a bit I just back off on the main bolt just a little until it turns free. You need to tighten the shaft side screw fairly tight to keep the shell plate from tightening as you index the shell plate.
  13. Call Springfield, they are $10.00 plus shipping.
  14. Mixed Brass, I'm not really tracking how many times its been reloaded. Primers are seated .002 to .003 below flush. I'm loading 4.0 to 4.1 gn Clays. I know this is a popular load. I have read that Federal primers are hotter. Perhaps this will help them seal better?
  15. I have noticed a ring of small pits in the breach face of my XD Tactical 45. I have shot around 2500 rounds through this pistol. I believe that the primers may be leaking. I don't see any obvious signs on the spent brass, but something is causing it. I have been loading on a 550B. 4.0gn Clays with Winchester WLP primers, 230gn Berrys RN with mixed brass. I just got a new XDM 5.25C .45 and have shot about 400 rounds through it and am seeing the same thing beginning to happen. I am going to try Federal primers to see if it makes any difference. I would like to know if anyone has seen this, and what could be causing the problem. It would seem that oversize primer pockets would be a more random thing if that was the problem. Thanks in advance.
  16. Jennings Mack Precision Scale $65.00 oldwillknottscales.com/jennings-jscale-mack-100.aspx
  17. Thanks, I have a case Gage from Dillon that I use during my final inspection. I am sure I don't have any case bulge. I noticed a bit of the opposite on finished rounds. The brass is sized in a bit in the middle between the bullet and the thicker part of the case wall, say about 1/4" from the base. I don't see this in factory loads. I wonder if the sizing die is tapered or strait? 9mm Luger has a tapered case, yes? at any rate, I have not had any fail to gage.
  18. Hi All! I recently got my 550B from Brian's Store. A pleasure to do business with him. He answered my questions and helped me figure out what all I needed. I am loading 45 ACP and 9mm. The first thing I want to ask is about sizing the 9mm brass. Is the resizing die supposed to be set the same as on strait case pistol brass? For setting the die I raised the shell plate and screwed the die in until it touched, and backed it off 1 turn. Is this correct for 9mm? I'm using Dillon Dies if that makes any difference. The other question is about the powder measure consistency. I pull 3 or 4 charges after any adjustments. I am weighing on a Mack Precision electronic scale. What kind of consistency should I expect with Bullseye and W321 powders? I am getting : 4.5, 4.44, 4.48, 4.44, 4.48. Measuring W231. Is this about what I should expect?
