Looks for Match

Looks for Match (2/11)

  1. I say yes and no. I use what I feel comfortable and train with. Most matches I see, from new guys to pros run Safariland, Bladetech or Comptac. I have use all of those plus some others over the years (to include HSGI tacos). Second, is budget, and you can do very well with some mag carriers that are dirt cheap, or home made out of kydex. I currently run my own kydex gear.
  2. Offset irons can rectify the (>1)-X situation, however, I find that even offset irons during some instances or even entire stages, it can be a hindrance. For the longest time (as stated) 1-4 were the norm and did well even in excess of 400 yards. Now with the influx of newer and decent cost 1-6 scopes, I highly recommend at least 1 power on bottom end. From what Jesse Tischauser mentioned a few days ago, there may be a sub $400 1-6 offered by Vortex (the strike eagle?) next year. I also know some people who run a Primary Arms 1-6 (sub $300) with good results, even with the not so crisp glass compared to a Swaro, Leupold or Vortex.
  3. Hornady 55gr FMJs are my go to bullets. Heck, they are accurate enough for some to take as their major match ammo and swear by them with the right load ( I was the same way for a while). Xtremes are ok, but I'm getting 2-3MOA groups verses 1.5-2. I have not changed my load data on them. Same 25.5g H335 @ 2.225 with light crimp. Can they hit most steel flashers and larues, most certainly, but under match conditions, I want to keep my margin of error and small as possible. If I break a shot at the edge of the plate rather than dead center, I feel more comfortable with something tighter. But for bay/burner and local match work, they are OK for me.
  4. I have been reloading Xtremes for over a year. Sadly, not sure if its the recent lot # I ordered, but I went from 2-3" groups at 25 yards, to cant hit a 12x12 cardboard target supported (fire 10, 8 hit). This confirmed by other shooters at a local 3Gun match I tanked. I originally thought it was the barrel, so I switched it out with a KKM, no change. Shot factory ammo, great results out of both the stock and KKM barrel. I hope its a bad lot, and will confirm when a new order comes in. My pet load data: 124 RN OAL: 1.135 Powder: 4.2g Tightgroup Avg vel: 1080 Now in comparison to (when It did shoot well) to Hornadys or MG, I usually get 1.5-2" groups at 25 yards. The difference between the two is negligible I believe in 3Gun but depends on someones budget and volume.
  5. I run primarily Glocks with reduced striker springs (ranging from 3.5 - 4.5# depending on the gun) with an extended/lightened striker. Out of all the other platforms I run my Glocks have the worst record of not setting off primers. Federal is my go to choice, but if I cant find them at my local shops, Winchester is next with CCI as the last go to choice. Having loaded them all, Federal has a better track record for me with a once in a blue moon failure. Winchester, I would maybe get 1 every match or so (so a ratio of 1/300), but CCIs I have had issues where I would have 3-4 in a single match (100-150 rounds). Now this is only out of my Glocks, M&Ps I have ran usually don't have an issue, neither do my 1911/2011 platforms.
  6. When I first started shooting, I bought from ATG and used DRS (Dallas Reloading Supply) ammo. This was back in 2010 up until late 2011 when I started loading for myself. Every now and then I see them pop up at the range I work at as customers come in and bring them and have a good opprotunity to examine and remember performances compared to, oh say Freedom Munitions, Stillwood, Georgia Arms, etc. Cost is decent and performance is on par with most other reman companies. However a note on performance, this is based on the fact if you get a good clean lot, or pick out the ones that are indeed good quality. Out of every batch I have ever bought or seen, I would have more than a good handfull with dented cases (some still shootable), primers backwards or sideways, or missing, etc. Silly to also note, that ATG has changed up thier website over the last year... I remember awhile back when there were more than just two reviews on that website on that ammo. They post: "DRS ammo for over 7 years and have had no complaints.".... sure...
  7. Thanks, I couldnt find the manual I have.
  8. So I was cleaning my Versamax today and took out the trigger group when all of a sudden the rod and spring that activates the lifter pops out on accident... found the rod, lost the spring. Anyone know where to find a replacement? Not entirely sure the actual nomenclature of the part/spring but web searches and retailers (midway and the like) doesnt quite have what Im looking for.
  9. Copied/Pasted from 3GN website: Heavy Metal Irons 16.43 STEVE WALL Heavy Metal Optics 15.68 JESSE TISCHAUSER Limited (Tactical Irons) 15.28 JAMES GILL Open 12.71 CLINT UPCHURCH Tactical Optics 11.54 AARON REED
  10. "With the advent of the 3GN Regional Series, all future 3GN Divisional races will now take place only at the 3GN Regional Championship matches." "The equipment Division races,..., are being discontinued at this time." Which is it? Welcome to 3 Gun Nation Version 5! Every year there is a format change of some sort... I loved shooting HMO this year, was planning on it next year along with HM buying brand new set ups... dont see it as a waste as the "traditional" outlaw matches will always be there... but ****, it was nice to know that there was something else beyond just the outlaw matches in the terms as a series/race.
  11. So it showed up today along with a ADM mount... quickly I noticed that the finish was pretty good and smooth, not compared to some "cheaper" scopes ive seen, (Despite the shiney glare in the photos, that was due to me cleaning my rifle with firelcean and flash). This is not a full review, just things I have noticed. Some other things I have noticed after looking through it and playing with it: Pros 1) It does have a true 1x, just have to play with the focus like any other scope and distances. 2) Elevation and windage has audible and detent click and rotate well, and protected by caps. 3) Clear glass (not as crisp maybe say to a Swaro, but still pretty good). 4) Eye box is very generous roughly 4-5" on 1x. Both Pro/Cons, falls in the middle 1) The illimination turret is a little tight to turn, however, does have audible "clicks"/falls into the probably detent/bearing. It is also visible in daylight from 5-6 (max) setting. Only center 1moa dot and horseshoe is illimunated (so like your MTAC and BTR). 2) The reticle (which is SFP), compared to my Bushnell 1-6.5 BTR2 SFP, is about half the size, however still clean lines (no catapiller legs/"hairy) and all the holdovers are visible. Cons 1) Only one so far as I havent done any field testing. I personally use a 50/200 yard zero and use standard mils... no BDC as I use different ammo and loads varying rifle, what im using, etc. This scope, much like MTACs and the like, are meant for standard factory 55gr loads and is based off a 100y zero. With that said, I would have to change the way I zero to accomodate the scope BDC and have ammo match it. This is a personal thing, but if the BDC matches my 100y zero and loads, reading the BDC is easy to pick up (as its labled from 100/zero (center dot), 200 (bottom edge of center dot), 300 top of line, 400+ is marked to 800 yards. Will have to run several local matches and maybe a mjor to see if itll hold up to the rigors of 3Gun, but with a 400 price tag with a mount, could be a good entry level optic, or backup... and its a 1-6.
  12. I'll give it a shot, I have a backup build that needs an updated optic. Heck, if it goes well, might run it at Blue Ridge... maybe... still like my Bushnell 1-6.5. Ill post some reviews when it gets here.
  13. These classifers also work towards the 3GN Club point series, and at the end of the tour, the winner each division gets a rifle. So you would say it is fair then for a person to run classifiers multiple times, get the 400 points than lock the points race? What if he did that with every division? Granted its a new series, does have some things to work out, but most MDs and ROs pretty much are on the same page for a "one and done" method. If there is one classifer in a match, once and thats it (my preference) at that match (if you want to attend a match every week, so be it) per division. There needs to be an effort/incentive. Granted this is speculative and have brought this up with Charles and Chad. However in your theory then, lets say a guy in January (say thats when the series "resets") a guy has the ability to shoot 4 classifers as many times he wants in Jan, grab 400 points, sit back and shoot nothing for the entire year and get a free rifle (or more per division) at series end unless someone else does it and a tie breaker is needed. The top #? shooters per division also get an invite for the 3GN Pro Series classifer. Its not USPSA where your %tile brings pretty much nothing but into a bracket at sectional, regionals and nationals.
  14. I would like to see, as Jack stated, its overall durability and lengevity. There are some questionable reviews on ARFCOM and on thier website itself (namely illumination, reticle size and crispness, and possibly not true 1x), but if after awhile, if the the reviews are as good as thier Micro and 1-4, I might take a look/as a backup. Field reviews would be nice rather than "by word of mouth". Not saying cheap is not the way to go, if that is the case, all those Burris MTACs, Millets, etc. I've seen would fit that category. 1-6 at that price may be in favor of those getting into 3Gun.
  15. LSnSC (I will be coming to your match next month, if GP is going, sorry for the wait). The issue is I see with 3GN vs USPSA is what is up for grabs in the club series... an actual prize/rifle per top division holder and a spot into the next years classifer match. If it would be allowed to have anyone just pay into getting running the same classifer over and over to get 100s (top 4 to be scored in the 3GN Club series), then we run into issues. I shoot almost every Tarheel/Bushmaster match ands its affiliates across NC and SC and the MD (when we had ours a few weeks ago) stated it was a one and done deal, however, could pay the submission score fee if you wanted to run a different division. USPSA I never saw where a classifer really gave you any benefit or prize and you would also have your "sandbaggers" or people who dont care. 3GN, alot more is up for grabs and has a monetary worth. In short, one and done classifier per match (*per division*; pay fee for other divisions) for the 3GN club series is how it should be run and how I would accept it. If that guy was able to run the same classifer multiple times in the same division, I would like to know where and when. I would say if you have any questions or concerns, contact Charles, hes the one whos in charge/startes the club series.
