Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Well Parsons, your questions hard for me to answer, as i have no other experience to compare the club to.... When is the next shoot over at Putnam? In terms of the range itself, I can say its well organized. The members of the range that run and care for it seem to be extremely dedicated to our sport, which shows come match time. I am hard pressed to imagine a better environment for fostering shooters who, like myself, are new to the sport. Most everybody present at the matches seem knowledgeable, and more importantly are willing and even eager to share their knowledge. It is a pleasant atmosphere where safety is taken very seriously. A very noticeable change from Beach Fork, where I feel as though I should be wearing body armor most of the time. That being said I still find myself at Beach Fork at least three times a month,(sans armor) as there just doesn't seem to be an alternative.
  2. Okay, I have shot four or so local USPSA matches in SS, Limited, and Production divisions as a U shooter. Mostly to allow me to get a feel for the sport, and its intricacies, while I still know little to nothing about the sports intricacies after four matches, I have become addicted ... However I did have to take a break after cutting off the tip of my dominant hand middle finger , but now I am ready for more. Today (actually yesterday, its 2:37 in the am, having a devil of a time sleeping lately ) I decided that I will fully dedicate myself to the sport. I won't go into past training regimens, as far as I am concerned, it all starts anew today. USPSA registration money is on its journey , and i embark on my own... Todays practice was simple, consisting of a half hour of par timed reload drills. From; on target, reload, to back on target, being honest with myself 9 out of 10, are within self imposed 1 second par time on my timer. I still feel as though there is some wasted motion, and that my movements aren't as repeatable as they should be for optimal results. In a future post I will include a video for feedback on that subject. After reloads i started a round of dryfire transition drills, during which I emphasized trigger control and front sight focus. Finished with push ups and situps. In retrospect in future sessions the pt will be put in front of the pistol drills. In the limited match experience that I've had, I have noticed that my biggest speed obstacles are in the transitions, and moving between arrays. To help rectify this I am ordering an airsoft approximation of my blaster so that i can set up and run different scenarios more realistically. Any advice is welcome. Also if there are any shooters in the WV, KY, OH tri-state area that are actively training for USPSA, and could be a training partner for range days please feel free to contact me.
  3. Last year i decided i would like to start competing in production division, no problem right? I head to a local gun store to see what they had to offer. The clerk looks up from his tacticool magazine just long enough to ask me what i was looking for. I replied that i was looking for a 9mm auto for production division. (On a prior visit the same clerk had said that he used to compete in uspsa, I assumed he was being honest...) Hastily putting down his magazine he looked at me and said that i would have to do a special order, we don't carry any compensated pistols. Thinking it was a misunderstanding I reiterated that I wanted a production pistol in 9mm. His reply was i couldn't use 9mm in production anyway, but he would be happy to order an STI in .38 Super for me. I went elsewhere.Six months later, i was shopping for a scope to sit on my weatherby 7mm Rem Mag, on a whim i stopped by the same store, the same clerk informed me that I shouldn't buy the scope i wanted (bushnell elite 4200) I should instead buy a Barska or save up for a Leupold vx-1, I said i would much rather have the Bushnell, he said i must be an idiot, and went to the back room of the store..... I informed the store owner i would start shopping there again when he fired that clerk, and have not been back since.
  4. Howdy, and welcome to the best forum for all things competition. Any information you could ever need is readily available, if you haven't yet, try the search function.... takes you right where you need to be. -james
  5. Howdy from a fellow West Virginian (south west). Are you shooting matches? If so, where? I usually go to the matches in eastern Ky. Of course, Ky is only 15 min. away....
  6. Hello everyone, been lurking for about a year...... Far too busy trying to absorb all the awesome info/knowledge contained in this little treasure trove to post until now. I'm relatively new to USPSA, having shot only four matches or so. On that note, many thanks to Gary Stevens, and the Ashland Gun Club for helping me get myself sorted out. This is truly a fantastic sport, the shooters I've competed against thus far have been phenomenal sportsmen. In what other sport will your competitors do everything in their power to make you a better player?! I'm hooked. -James
