  1. We had a 73yr old Vet this past weekend for his first time shooting 3 gun. He almost went home because he saw what everyone else was doing but we convinced him to stay and try it. He did stay and had a blast, we had to pick him up on a few stages, but it happens every now and then.
  2. Crye, I think it's Crye, now makes a battle belt based off the competition belt idea behind the safiland and others. The two belt velcro idea.
  3. The first thing I ever won in 3 gun was a Warne scope mount, 30mm, needed a 34mm for my Mk6. Warne swapped my 30mm for 34mm for nothing. Once I properly tightened the mount screws down (completely my fault for not doing it the first time as this is literally my first scope mount combo) she's spot on everytime. I might suck that day but the rifle mount scope thing works great.
  4. I've seen matches where buckshot is req'd and I've seen the above were it's capped at 7 1/2. 7.5's have plenty of energy to knock steel over or flip a spinner, as long as enough of the payload hits the target. We had one particularly nasty shot spinner on a stage that was put far enough away that anyone using a choke more open than a mod may as well have been using a wet noodle. Nearly everyone burned down all the little knock overs with ease and quickly, then threw 10+ rounds of shot at the spinner, and the spinner just laughed. I put in my full choke and was the slowest shooter at the knock overs and I got a few chuckles as I missed a few and had to take second shots. I then 2 shot spun the spinner...
  5. Yesterday Magpul announced a 60 round drum mag for M4/M16 platforms. Today they announced a pmag for 9mm glocks. Next week is going to be interesting to see what they have left for Shot Show
  6. Yup, which is why I perfered the EoTech for competitions, the bottom of the outer ring is 7m if you use a 50m zero. Anything about a car length away you use the bottom of the circle, works great.
  7. I used 2 EoTech red dots in 3 gun for 2 years. a 512 and an EXPS 3-4. I didn't notice any parallax issues at all. I successfully engaged a 500m target with the EXPS on my ACR 75gr handload, and was 12" high on a single shot bonus target at 700m with the 512 on my stock AR-15 55gr FMJ factory load (ACR was in the shop). I have hit numerous 300m and in targets I hit with no issues, as long as I did my part with rifle fundamentals. My 75gr handloads pattern better past 300m.
  8. I run an ACR for 3 gun, I also use 3 gun as a simulator, I only compete against myself. 16" CHF Melonite barrel and she's heavy. Dragged it through the dust out here, factory ammo, handloads she eats anything with an acceptable accuracy window (I won't win any long distance matches but I can ruin your day from 500 yards or less). Latest 3 gun bandwagon I've seen is all about carbon fiber barrels instead of steel. My ACR is what I would grab if I needed a duty weapon, but it's mine and fits my needs in my current environment. Your duty weapon need to fit you for your environment, if you've done the research on CHF vs non CHF and it's not worth $100 TO YOU, then it's not worth it (I honestly haven't looked into the difference). Chrome is great, I have a chrome lined AR, works fine, as I said my ACR is not chrome lined, instead they went with a melonite treatment, again works fine. Shooting 3 to 4 times a month at say 150 rounds a session is 450-600 a month, 12 months comes out too 5400-7200 rounds a year for your expected usage of training
  9. If the purpose of the rifle is for competitions and you know exactly what you are going to encounter (paper bad guys etc) then you can game the rifle and it's parts to exactly what you are going to need. If the purpose of the rifle is a duty/patrol weapon and it's there for when a day goes to shit, it needs to be able to handle whatever just happened, which we won't know what it is until it happens, though we have a rough idea. If your rifle can't handle that bad of a day, your day just went from bad to really shitty. Your call.
  10. +1 Also the added benifit of when picking up someone elses mags during range reset, AK / .308's or sti/glock/m&p/1911's, they still fit
  11. MGM targets, 6 each 4" Round knock over targets, 1 set of 6 knock over stands. Can easily mimic a plate rack setup with it, adds some bonus light cardo workout to your training. Also you can use them for regular knock over training in combination with paper and steel challenge targets. Much smaller to store and transport, and mechanically the most simple target I can think of (since it has no mechanism to break)
  12. I do I shoot an ACR and plan to try out the Desert Tech MDR when it's released.
  13. You need to run the test. Buy as many different bullet weight and types you can, and simply shoot each for groups completely ignoring your zero. Which ever one groups the smallest and most consistent is the one your barrel likes. GENERALLY SPEAKING, tighter twist rate barrels like heavier bullets. My barrel is stamped 1/9 and loves 55gr and 75gr Hornady bullets.
  14. Aftermarket parts are a huge part of buying any gun for a sport. The support for anything other than a M-16/M-4/AR-15 based is limited at best.
  15. I've seen small steel knock overs hit by slugs at about 5 yards, you find them 35-50 yards down range or the next pit over as when they hit a berm they continue to roll up it, it's kinda obvious. Also if you pay real close attention, slugs and shot sound different when fired. Shot is a short boom, slugs have slightly longer pow sound, that's as best as I can describe it. Where I shoot 3 gun we don't DQ for shooting kncok over steel with slugs, we give you a 300 second penalty and make you pay for the target.
  16. Incoming PM, my suggestion is the Luepold Mk6 1-6.
  17. I have a Mk 6 1-6 with the cmr-w 556 reticle. When zoomed out to 1x, I find that I really don't need the red dot at all for burning paper targets. Granted this is during optimal outdoor lighting conditions during the daytime hours. The scope for me was ok (there was a slight optical shift) at 1x when I wore contact lenses or used perscription inserts into my ballistic eyewear, after I had my LASIK surgery 1x is absolutely awesome as that shift is completely gone. I have mine zero'd at the mannual suggested 50/200m mark, the top of the longer yardage post is 300m. all my 300m targets I put that post center of mass and as long as I am doing my part, I get hits. This both my first and only zoom optic I have, so I cannot vouch for other zoom optics. I love how solid she feels both on and off the rifle, the power dial is smooth and responsive but yet requires some umpf to move so acidental contact doesn't amke you go from 1 to 6 suddenly. 2013 Ironman I watched a guy go to war with and time out on a dueling tree at 100m, made it to his shotgun and timed out before he fired a single slug, never even saw his pistol... His reticle had no hairs on it at all. Personally any variable power optic must have hash marks, bumps, lumps, something kind of distance measurement other than "about there should do it"
  18. I got a Mk6 1-6 with that reticle and I am loving it. Having never used any magnified optics ever there is a training deficiency with me. Once I got it zero'd at 50yds, the reticle performed as advertised, I was 1-2 shotting 300yd+ targets if I was doing my fundamentals properly.
  19. I have used my ACR as my main rifle in 3 gun ever since I started 3 years ago. I used an EoTech (512 and an EXPS 3-4) for the first two years, this year I am using a Luepold MK6. Swapped the trigger out for a Geissele 3gun trigger (any geissele is worth the price), and swapped out the A2 birdcage for a Surefire muzzle brake. I switch between the folding and fixed stock depending on the stage, we sometimes have vehicles we shoot in, around, and thru. The ACR is heavy, little to no after market mods designed for competition. The accuracy issue is rifle to rifle, I was making 500m shots with my eotech 512 and the stock trigger (used tuned hand loads), then some days I can't hit an auto popper at 160 yards using factory ammo (stress on the "I" that was driver error not rifle). You have to keep an eye on the middle roll pin in the charging handle, little bugger will wiggle loose and shave off some of your upper and drop aluminum shavings into the action and seize the whole thing, mine stopped up while I was training one day and I kicked the snot out of the changing handle to knock it loose, 8 months later, when I couldn't get the bolt out to clean it, I did a more in depth disassembly and found what I had broken. I am now going to jinx myself but whatever, during any and all of my matches I have had 0 rifle malfunctions, I keep my rifle, action open, near my fellow shooters for when thier rifles fail, they have had 0 malfunctions with my rifle. I am fully aware this streak will not last indefinately, but I am sure enjoying it at the moment. During a 3 day carbine class in May of 2012, I had 2 stove-pipes, both fixed in under 2 seconds, I did no maintenance to my ACR during those days. I wanted to see at what point would she fail, 1700 rounds in those 3 days and she just kept firing. All this in the treasure valley area Idaho, very close to afghanistan in terms of climate and dust. Mine loves to shoot 75gr hornady bullets, no idea why with the stock 1/9 twist barrel, but she does. Buy as many different weights of bullets as you can and shoot for groups that day and see what she likes. The surefire muzzle brake increases the felt recoil impulse, however she comes straight back at you, no up/down, no side to side, so hang on tight and your follow up shots will be right on. Look into getting a version 2 brass deflector from Bushmaster, it sloves the 5.56 stove pipe problem. Also look into the ACR forums we have going, lots more ACR specifics there.
  20. Gemtech, suppressors that mount to PWS/Ambush tactical comps Advanced Armament Corp and Surefire are suppressor/mount comp combos
  21. The only scope I own is a Leupold mk6, she is a thing of beauty and I do not do that scope justice... yet.
  22. Silly n00bie question about 6.5 creedmoors in general. Since the case is based off of 308 win am I correct in assuming that an AR-10 setup in 308 win would only require an upper change to go with 6.5 creedmoor? Same lower same mags?
  23. lcukily I had both hands on the thrower arm, making my right arm parallel to the throwers path, so it skipped off the underside of my right forearm and being a mechanic for so many years I have a few extra layers of skin, which it promptly removed.
  24. Barrel length is mission dependant, SPR setups you're looking at 18+, standard patrol 16, VIP protection details 14.5 and under (lots of getting into and out of vehicles). Optics are again mission specific, SPR some kind of magnification, standard patrol anything. For competitions I used an Eotech, for a work AR I'd use an Aimpoint T1, smaller, tougher, less hanging off my gun to get caught up in, always on. But these are some of my choices based on what capabilities I want my rifle to have goverend by what I'm doing. Having the gun function in a fight/competition is of primary importance, but you have to get the gun to the fight and it has to be enough gun for the fight.
