    Glock 17 for IDPA

Trigger reset (tension) springs are the same for all models, you can get factory or Wolff. The only changes I've made to my G17's for IDPA SSP and USPSA Limited is plain black Heines sights, G21 mag release, 3.5lb connector, KwikGrips, and about 60,000 rounds each. Do not recommend the extended slide stop, too easy to bump during shooting and especially when grabbing the gun from a flat surface. There are lots of nice triggers out there also, Vanek, Dale Rhea, Stotello and lots of guys that can do great triggers. Some shooters like the 13lb recoil spring, it seems to help on double taps. Do not recommend anything made out of Titanium, seems to cause light strikes.
  3. I like the match even better now! Won 3rd C limited, shooting minor, worth $40 and my buddy won 1st C open, shooting minor, worth $175.
  4. No problem, I have been there since '99. Let me know.
  5. Dave may be the 2nd loser, but he is the tallest shooter in USPSA so ports and walls mean nothing to him! He just shoots over the whole thing.....
  6. I use the standard G21 mag release and round the sharp corners with a emery board.

    G34 Reloads

Forgot about the too long reload. Had a similar problem several months ago on a couple of hundred 9mm reloads. Turns out the left swing arm on my Dillon Square Deal broke, and I didn't realize at first. It wasn't until the pull seemed much longer than normal, but the end result was a bunch of too long bullets running about 1.190". Intermitent failure to feed, but everything is happy at 1.145" overal...

    G34 Reloads

Your'e not thumbing the slide stop?
  9. It conceals, and cools.... choose from 4 smart colors. http://www.palmflex.com/techniche/deluxe_vests.htm They are great for riding on hot days but you get a lot more cooling going 85mph. Haven't tried mine at a match yet.
  10. Great match, solid running gun stages, just enough steel and movers, excellent RO's, a little slow at the classifier/chrono, but the weather was insane! 112*F in Nipomo Friday afternoon. It's a good thing I train in Palm Springs all the time. Probably swilled down a dozen Gator Aids on Saturday, keep cool by dipping my neck towel and hat in icewater.... We did get thru all 10 stages on Saturday.

    G34 no slide lock

Just fixed one couple of weeks ago. Intermitent problem, shooter not hitting the slide stop, good mags, no visible damage, not assembled wrong. The first clue was when you pull the top off, and flick the slide stop up and down, it was not positive, and binding up. Pulled it out and the spring was bent sideways so even putting it in correctly it would rest about halfway over the small pin. Flattened it out and put it back in and ran fine. It's real easy to bend that little spring. 2006 Honda VTX1800N1, CA plate '1800N1' soon to be 2008 Honda GoldWing....
  12. Eveyone that shoots in competition reloads, and Glocks are no different. I have put about 150,000 thru my G17s over the last 8 years in stock barrels. I don't use lead only because it mucks up the reloading dies, but alot of guys do. You have to keep an eye on it. My load is either jacketed 115 or 124's, whatever is cheapest at the time, 4.0 grains of Hodgdon Titegroup at 1. 145 overal length. Goes about 1,150fps and easily makes minor. You will only save big $$$ if you buy in big lots, ie, 50,000 bullets, 50,000 primers, and 40 lbs of powder. This assumes you have at least two 5 gallon buckets full of brass, and a nice progressive reloader. You save about $40 per thousand at current prices... If you earn way more than that per hour, just buy your ammo.
  13. The current rule book states : This (FTN) penalty applies to any target that does not have at least one (1) four zone (minus 1) or higher value hit. However since each target has a point value of 10, doesn’t this also mean that two -3 (plus 2 points each) scores 4 points and not receive the penalty? Our club has only been giving FTN’s with a -3 and a miss.
  14. If you haven't allready read this... A guy blew up a G35 at Palm Springs, wasn't hurt, destroyed the barrel and top end, bent the heck out of the frame rails, blew out the mag and mag catch. Was that all the commotion at the middle bay with 2 stages at Palm Springs Steel Challenge on Sunday? I have seen more Glocks blow up, break, quit, etc... That particular bay must be the 'Glock Triangle' I had a case rupture on a G34 several years ago, didn't blow it up, just blew out the mag and mag catch which cut my finger. I witnessed a G21 duty gun blow up there. I cracked 2 G17 slides at the ejection port on that same bay. I can't remember all the other Glock malfunctions that occur there over the years. The club should find a new location. (Edited: However there is a large population of long time Glock competitors, so chaos theory says that could all go bad on any given day...) Ok, the 40 Glocks don't have an edge on KB's, but what they do have is the highest chamber pressure of the popular Glock calibers (not withstanding 357Sig). So using high density fast burning powders, TiteGroup, Clays, cases of unknown origin, how many times cycled, how they were last loaded, heavier bullets, set back is critical, and lead bullets, increases the odds of blowing up. And it's pretty impossible to double charge a progressive, but not a 550. I think Dennis has blown up 2 G35's at Palm Springs. Anyway, use a low density slow burning powder, 165gr FMJ bullets, and new cases, or at least once fired police range brass, such as brassmanbrass.com. Load to maximum length, and pick up only your cases, then pitch them out after 4 to 5 loads. Come to think of it, Steel Challenge doesn’t have a power floor? All you need is to ‘dink’ the plates. Try some 135gr bullets on top of Vihtavuori N340 7.5 grs at 1.140” plus overall (as long as possible to get thru the mag and chamber ok). Fast bullet and low chamber pressure. Interesting article on chamber pressures.. http://www.greent.com/40Page/ammo/40/180gr.htm At least you can blow up 5 Glocks to 1 STI/SVI.
  15. Just curious, why wouldn't you just go get a good 1911 wide body to start with?

  18. I will tell you my experience. I sheared the barrel lug off a G21 using reloads and a Barstow barrel, and had a case rupture on a G34, did not blow up the gun, but it ripped out the mag release and wrecked a mag. Cut my middle finger. I have personally witnessed 2 G21's blow up completely, wrecked the barrel, slide and frame. One from a reload, the other from American Ammo, new from Miami. The reloaded KB cut the shooters forhead and his fingers, and to make it worse, it was a duty issue gun, tough to explain to the Captain. The Miami ammo KB shooter only had cut fingers. I also know of a G17 KB, and 2 G22 KB's. The G17 KB was a reload, and the G22's were early issue factory Federal ammo. However, in all fairness, I blew up a Colt Gold Cup 25 years ago, and have seen a blown up Berreta 92F, and a S&W 686. I think a Glock is easier to blow up because the chamber is less supported than other designs. Now I only reload once fired brass in the 9mm...
  19. Bob's talking about me 'I rarely if ever see people wearing ear plugs or muffs while out in town. Well maybe some of the married ones but they don't count............. ' That's why I have 'Yes, dear...' tattoed on my forearms. However when we used to run big IDPA matches, (state and regional) I would specifically allow cleats and knee/elbow pads (stated in the rules on the flyer) at the ranges we operated out of because of the terrain. Most SoCal ranges are built on pretty rough stuff, especially Palm Springs, a former dump site. Even though it goes against the IDPA rules, the match director has to consider the safety of the shooters and the liablity against the club officers, RO's and promoters. Nobody complained about this rule, but then nobody complained about the $10,000 prizes either(not really, just plaques but the fine print says 'Estimated Perceived Value is $10,000). My gripe is those completely phony baloney photographers concealment vests! Come on, have you ever in your life seen anyone wear that on the street? At least real photographers have a bunch of cameras and crap hanging all over them and couldn't get a gun out even if they had one... And to think some shooters would buy and wear these just to gain an edge from the draw. Why that goes against the very spiritual core of IDPA! I allways wear a Hawaiin shirt, blue jeans, semi hiking books, same as what I wear to work everyday (not the same shirt). The only difference is a sun hat, prescreption shooting glasses and electric hears. In with cleats and pads, out with phony mesh vests and 'practical/tactical sequentially prioritized 27 pocket pants'
  20. Cactus, we have big 3-gun matches here all the time (Area II and California Series). I don't know about the 'off list lower' or even what it means, but there are plenty of us honest to goodness registered CA DOJ legal AR owners with 30 round sticks. Besides the IDPA multi gun rules are going to say 10 in the mag anyway? just like when I shoot my G17 in IPDA.... It just means more reloads and I can leave the 45 round sticks and the Beta Mag at home.... We could invent the 'California Reload' for IDPA multigun. Remove and replace the 30 round stick every 10 rounds. Named after the USPSA 'Arizona Reload' where you threw a loaded mag from your belt on the ground. We could call this new one the ' Defensive Rifle Retained Sequential Tactical Priority Reload' or DRRSTPR for short, pronounced 'Dirstpur'
  21. It might be that you need corrective lenses, instead of new sights. My glasses are made so that the dominant right eye is focused on the front sight and the weak left eye is focused to infinity. This also works well for shotgun and rilfe. Originally told to me by Mike Dalton about 12 years ago.
  22. I have plain Heines sights on all my Glocks, and have installed at least 25 other sets. The rear can be type, but I have never filed either sight or dovetail, just a drop of oil on each side and keep pushing. A more common problem is the front sight that will not fit snug in the slide. It's best if the front can be tapped in with a small gunsmith hammer. The other thing is I use Permatex #2 on the threads instead of Locktite thread locker and have never had a problem. If you remove a Heine rear and install it on another gun it will usually be loose enough to have to drill and tap the rear with a set screw..
  23. it's a secret....IDPA will continue to have the pistol nationals on the EAST coast...and will have the 3 GUN NATIONALS on the west coast.. Now we are talking!!!! Hurry up and get the rules approved, published and sanction the first annual IDPA 3 Gun Nationals at Norco, CA(or Palm Springs, or Pala, or Piru, or Bakersfield, even Vegas will do....)
  24. Palm Springs Gun Club, CA, actually Thousand Palms, CA. 1st Sunday of the month, between 12 to 40 shooters, depends on the month, usually 150-200 rounds total. Rifle out to 300 yards. Match director favors long pistol shots, lots of slugs, and bowling pins at 25 yards for rifle...
  25. If you shoot enough reloaded rounds thru any Glock in competition, you will blow one up, even a 9mm. I have witnessed many .45acp's and 40S&W's, so I was somewhat surprised when I blew a G34. No matter, Glock will replace it for about $250, they don't ask, you don't tell..
