  1. that looks good but man they are steep! $425 seems like a bunch. looks like if I want to go this route i need to pay to play.
  2. 10" upper compared to a colt 3 gun upper. Nice and short! Very handy, but haven't shot it at distance yet. Really debating changing it into this little green guy
  3. I have, and run it with my 22 conversion at steel matches and stuff. It's a good way to see what works and if it runs. Not always ideal for long ranges, but they are great up in close
  4. I know we've talked about these before, but now that there are different brands out has anyone been playing with them? Thinking about for my non-3 gun rifle where a close in stock might be advantageous. What have you used and how's it work in extension? Anyone try a version where you get to keep your BCG?

  6. I can shoot a semi auto shot gun, then shoot the hull as it comes flipping out The first shot I'm pushing the shotgun forward but I do have it on video somewhere. useless and took a box before I got it on tape.
  7. it's not a full rail, it's a half rail. I heard they are right on the edge of too heavy, but maybe some light grips or tri topping it will get you there. I read up on it, and I want one, but I don't have much in the way of real world reports to go off of.
  8. Hey all, Just wondering if anyone has actually picked up an RO operator 9mm yet. I've been thinking about it a while, but like the RO compact I'm guessing the price Falls a bit once the newness wears off. Anyway just wondering if anybody got one yet, and made it their dream SS gun or not.
  9. Don't do dragon scales on a slide! I had that done to an M&P for carry. I was so excited when I got it I grabbed and racked the slide and cut my hand wide open. A little grip would do it. Took some sand paper and paint (and band aids) before I even tried again
  10. I had Gary do some mill work for my last gun, and I really like how it turned out. I was hoping to get whomever I send the gun to to be the one that did chrome to save on shipping (adds like $100 if I do it).
  11. Hey all, thinking about getting my now decade old Les Baer sent out to be just generally tuned up, have an SVI flat trigger put in, and maybe hard chrome. I really liked the work Alchemy was doing, but my understanding is that they aren't taking work anymore. Who else are the good but not crazy expensive people to get work done? I don't want any slide lightening or crazy milling work, just the guts checked and replaced if needed, maybe a trigger job, fit a new trigger, and the chrome or similar finish (currently stainless). Thanks!
  12. A trijicon with dead tritium is still fiber optic powered and works fine as a scope. An aim point with a dead battery is nothing. If you open the trijicons fiber optics up all the way, enough splashed light from a weapons light will light it up fine and if you're shooting from pitch black into a lit area, it still works as a blacked out reticle. I'm torn as I'm currently trying to pair down my collection to just game and zombie guns. I love my 3 gun rifle, but it's heavy, and I think setting off a JP comp inside the house would make everybody deaf
  13. I tri-topped and had the barrel flush cut on a range officer champion. I didn't weigh it before, but my guess is between 1-2 ounces total. Not a ton, but it's on moving weight, so it helps to reduce recoil. Also, a Tri topped slide looks like a big triangle from behind the gun. That makes it a lot easier to use the slide as a flash sight picture for close targets. top of the triangle is where the front sight is, so just line the triangle up with the close target and drop the hammer
  14. because military guys carry their guns way more than they shoot them. we shoot our guns for hopefully under a minute and then put them in a stroller. forgrips make a gun more comfortable to hold, since it puts your wrist in a more natural position if you're standing or walking. but it's awkward to shoot. Try it and if you like it, go for it. I'd be happy to sell you one of mine, since I had the same thought process and now don't use them.
  15. Tri topping lightens the moving parts of the gun, so the slide cycles faster. Gets more of the mass below the bore axis, and reduces felt recoil. Shaving weight lets you put heavy grips or a magwell on it if you want. Plus it looks cool. I did it to shave some weight. I carry it more than shoot it, so wanted light as possible.
  16. So it's picky about everything and something always needs to be tweaked or tuned? :-D Only kidding...sort of.A RO 9mm is my next gun purchase. I think the RO is the best bang for the buck out there. no, cycles fast, sights come straight back, and it runs so well it looks like I know what I'm doing
  17. I have owned a spartan and currently own a RO compact to carry. They are both good choices, that's for sure. Either way you're going to want a magwel, so factor that in the price. My vote is the RO. You could spend some of that money getting the slide tri topped and some fun grips. Mine runs like an open gun and it's a blast to shoot. I will ever buying an RO operator at some point too.
  18. I just picked up a couple of 60 round surefire mags to play with. I was reading that they are close in length to the GI mags, but that's not totally true. anyway, 60 rounds on tap seems fun, and I had a couple of Lancer 47rounders get hung up on barricades. My fault more than the mag's, but still.
  19. Hey all, I'm thinking about picking ups red dot for my non-competition AR, a 10" sbr. I have a TR 21 on my competition build, and really like the 1x. but for the SBR, I don't think I'll want or need zoom, since it's an under 200 yard gun anyway. I'm wondering who else (besides AImpoint) makes a decent red dot that holds up and I can leave on. I want to change batteries 1x a year, and don't want to worry about turning the optic on/off. I like Aimpoint and have owned some in the past, but I don't think I can tie up $600 on a dot that will site in the safe, hopefully seldom if ever used.
  20. Springfield! I have a springfield range officer compact with a couple of thousand rounds through it and it's holding up just fine. significantly lighter than the steel version, too.
  21. and not super fast. My timny trigger dialed down, heavy bull barrel, and JP comp would let me shoot as fast or faster than that, without the shady might technically be a machine gun edge. practice and good gear, not gimmicks. that said, I shot a USPSA stage with a GLock 18 and 33 round mags. each target got about 6 shots, and it was AMAZINGLY easy to control and make good shots. so full auto does have some competition uses.
  22. I know this is blasphemy on a gun forum, but going for it anyway. I'm looking to consolidate and have fewer calibers, and generally nicer gear. I'm trying to figure out what's the bare minimum I could get away with and still fill all these different gun roles pretty well. I have a few guns that I think fill multiple roles, and a few I won't get rid of ever (my les baer competition 1911 and an over/under I bought years ago). so here are the events I shoot and the things I want to do with them: 3 gun Night 3 gun USPSA (but like single stack and don't mind limited minor) steel challenge local style tactical matches (USPSA/IDPA fewer rules and no power floor) informal skeet/trap/sporting clays Home Defense CC deep cover stuff CC medium sized/EDC Range fun Now thinking about it, I'm sort of leaning towards a good AR set up with a 1-4, that should be good for 3 gun and HD A semi auto 12 gauge for 3 gun and informal games. the serious skeet people look at you funny with an extended shotgun but I'm having the most trouble with the pistol. I'm leaning towards an STI double stack 9mm with a rail (marauder or tactical) to fill the competition handgun rules for most of the events, serve as HD as well, and be occasionally carried if I'm going somewhere shady, but I'm too old to do that much. the baer as it's set up is uncomfortable to carry with adjustable sights and giant magwell, and too annoying to switch back and forth. I have a little LCP to throw in the pocket to walk the dog, anything more adventurous than that go with a range officer compact, but I could see selling the ROC to cover some costs. so can anyone see something I'm missing or have suggestions? I don't mind selling some of my other stuff to help pair down and consolidate. Also, we had our first kid 3 months ago, so I'm sure my free time to shoot is going away even more than it is now. might as well get one gear set up I can do everything with and not waste time tinkering, right?
  23. hey, might as well update after reading through this stuff again. I shot my last 3 gun match October of 2015 and haven't shot one since. I didn't really have fun at that one (night 3 gun zombie match) but it was so poorly run it pissed me off. The guy designing the course on his own range, got to shoot for score against us. surprisingly, he and his RO buddies won most of the better prizes, including the raffle prizes. pretty sketchy if you ask me. anyway, i went to an indoor range a few times since then, but just to shoot around. no matches, no practice, no training, no reloading. I guess here's a list of what's Ive been doing: 1) That girlfriend is now my wife. But since the OP she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer that summer, so we spent most of our time fighting (and beating!) that. 2) Bought a house October of 14, the year of the original post. sold most of my competition stuff to come up with down payment and rehab money so we could work on it. Worked on it. 3) her brother died. 4) Finished a work certification that added 4 professional letters to my name, for free. 5) got married, one local ceremony and one up north. 6) she got pregnant. 7) while 6 months pregnant, she was T boned. totaled her car, sent her to the hospital, contractions started early, but luckily nothing ever got bad 8) spent the next 3 months going through rehab and physical therapy, every minute terrified something would go wrong with the baby 9) had the baby, and thankfully all good. he's a tough baby, didn't sleep a wink and screamed and screamed for 2 months. he's getting better now 10) had her work cut short her maternity leave because she "used some of it up" from the car accident. 11) we're here. so kind of a lot of stuff going on. I still check the forums a bunch, mostly looking to buy or sell parts, as I'm having fun building up some rifles and stuff. Still considering selling a pile of gear I have, and consolidating to a platform or 2. All the guns I talked about earlier are gone. sold them all to cover the down payment, the repairs to the house, and coming up with some extra money with time out of work, car repairs, etc. I still like guns. I want to have them. but ever time I get money in the gun fund, or save up, I seem to funnel it into the kids new 529 plan, or save it up for retirement, or think that for every maybe 20k we have saved, it's a year my wife doesn't have to work. or I pay daycare bills, because that's $1200 a month.... so still not sure. I've been upgrading the stuff I have, and had my buddy paint the heck out of my rifle, so it's super awesome. but otherwise I'm still thinking of selling stuff, of downsizing, of almost but not completely giving it up....
  24. I'm always concerned when they arrest someone with a pistol and like 40 rounds of ammo and call it an "arsenal". I call it EDC.
  25. I think the hardest part will be pretending I'm not excited.
