  1. I was also tired of my scope vibrating in the wind so went with a Manfrotto 190XPROB tri-pod and Manfrotto 322RC2 grip type head. Takes lot more wind to shake it now. These heads are very quick to move and stay where you put them. The tri-pod legs will spread out to 90* and center post will also switch 90* so you can use it prone. Very slick setup!

I'm 6' 0" and it is tall enough for me. Cost is around 300 depending on vendor.

  2. Bill, your shooting would benefit from just skipping the bench and shooting prone for sighting in and practicing other positions after you have your zero.

NZ has a lot of trees so if I were you I'd practice off tree limbs and other improvised rests.

Love your islands, been down there a couple times, hope to get back in a few years.

  3. Have used a Redi-mag for years and have no plans to take it off. That being said I've been shown it is just as fast to take a reload from the belt if you have room to carry it (I have the room) :roflol:

I have also seen well known 3-gunners grab a pistol mag in the heat of a match and when they get it up to insert have to drop it and go back after the correct mag. I usually carry an oh-sh*t mag on my belt, most of the time a 20 round as they don't flop around when running.

  4. I've shot 155 lapua's, 155 SMK's, 168 SMK's and 175 SMK's. Mine likes the 155 SMK's the best, load is 45.0 gr. RL-15 CCI benchrest for 2820 fps. Been getting 1/2 moa out to 800yd with it. Like others barrel has been turned down, JP trigger and threaded for brake/suppressor.

My 155 load is with Berger bullets (much higher BC) and leaves the muzzle at 3050 fps. Shooting a 155 at 168 gr speeds wont get you far in long range accuracy. The slightest wind will school you.

That is where the rifle likes it. Brass comes out undamaged and with zero pressure issues. You learn to dope the wind if you shoot long range in Kansas. Sierra's are much cheaper (factory second's) so I get to shoot more. According to published BC tables Berger 155 is .484 and the Sierra 155 SMK is .450 so only around 7% difference. The Sierra 155 palma is .504 bc above 2700 and still cheaper than the Berger.

  5. Trapr, thanks for writing this up, well done!

I've always thought that "practical rifle" targets should be at least 3 moa, hey 4 is even better. It is a lot more enjoyable to hit the target than to try and hit the target and time out. The better you are the quicker you will get your hits so the cream will always rise to the top.

There are matches out there that give you fly specs to shoot at, if that is what trips your trigger than attend and support them.

The use of low loose fault lines should be abandoned (ropes at tripping height). Trip hazards and loaded guns don't mix. Yes I tripped over one at Ft.B3G with an unloaded AR and no I didn't drop it.

When using barricades, walls and other vision/shoot barriers they should be angled so has to lessen the chance for 180 violations.

Thanks to all who donate their time, money and considerable efforts so we shooters can enjoy our choosen sport!!

  6. Was headed down the same road and found you are stuck with special thin wall chokes because of mentioned barrel wall thickness concerns. I ended up buying a 21" M2 barrel off a gun on the rack for replacement cost of the barrel. By the time I bought a used barrel and had it cut and rechoked it would be more than the new one.

  7. What ever scope you choose consider getting matching turrets and reticle. Mil/mil, or moa/moa. They are much easier to use if the dial ups match the reticle.

Nightforce has just come out with a FFP scope that is receiving great reviews, Premier has also come out with a new FFP scope, and of course my favorite U S Optics.

Save up and get the best glass you can, you won't be sorry.

  8. I came to the party late and having read through 3 + pages of discussion still feel as I did after the first page. This has got to be one of the dumbest rule changes ( yes changes, as I can't now do what I've done since the first RM3G) I've come across. I run a Redi-mag have for as long as I've been 3 gunning, which is quite a while. I use it for reloads and mono-podding. I spent countless hours and ammo learning how to do it quick and accurately. Just to be clear, I DON'T like the change, and as I've said many times, change is not your friend!

  9. Tried the CZ-22 and it was "ok", ran most of the time, a bit picky about the ammo it liked. Next was the DPMS, didn't run at all so back to DPMS, after return was pretty good would run maybe 90% very accurate. Still have the DPMS but built a Nordic and it runs! Feels close to the match AR with same optic. Like the hi-cap mags for 30 bucks and did I mention it runs.

For transitions and off-hand practice it is hard to beat.

  10. CZ is a good choice, but I'd go with the SP-01. A bit more weight so less recoil, 19 rnd. mags for those matches you don't shoot production in. Mine is very accurate, excellent trigger after trigger job, and it runs.

  11. Kurt was kind enough to bring his out to the OKC pistol match last weekend. I ran 2 25 or 30 round mags though it before I knew it. It actually does replicate the AR platform very well. And it does run! Of course the $1100 scope setting on it didn't hurt. If you get one stock up on 22 ammo as it goes through it very quickly. Keith

  12. Kurt doesn't practice prone because it's to hard to get up. :surprise: Really because he doesn't need to.

Practice monopoding and shooting from unusual positions. Also try weak side, nondominate eye around barricades. Just like pistol, be able to call your shots. This really helps with transitions and speeds up those distance engagements. KNOW your zero and aiming points for any distance out to 400 yd. Every night before you go to sleep repeat 3 times: I love my rifle, I love my rifle, I love my rifle. Keith
