  1. What does it take to switch back and forth? I saw a used STI/SVI top end that the main stopping point for me was it was setup for a lefty (actually the guy prefered the RHS release as a RH shooter). Gun Store was useless on this.
  2. Having my eyesight go from both directions, I do whatever I can to keep my shooting form. One of the keys of all top shooters is the iso stance/grip. I would not deviate from that without a serious good reason. I'm lucky that i have 'normal' vision in that I do not HAVE to wear eyeglasses (I can pass the driving test w/o them) but old age is creeeping in and I am natrually nearsighted (Which means soon i will be able to see things near AND far). Even if I have to get special glasses for shooting, I'd do that over changing form. Also as a cross eye dominant shooter (actually my right eye is crap) all I have to do is turn my head slightly and everything clears up for the front sight. Keep working on it but do not sacrifice your shooting stance to get it. There are a lot of ways to prevent the double sights--although you mention you can do it with both eyes open. If that works, do it. I'm a tape on the eyeglass dood myself. You also have to train your eyes just as you would your grip, stance, etc.
  3. I am a 'pale neck': Northern Redneck. I lose my color in winter. I am also the uber geek. College Professor. SHHHHHH or someone might hear you......
  4. 1 or 2 per month. off weekends is for live fire practice. Plus all our local USPSA matches seem to gravitate towards Sunday ya Godless heathens. (I kid, but sorry I gotta get me to church).
  5. I am mildly optimistic. Maybe Ruger can get into the handgun action with some decent models. We've seen CZ(and Tanfo) slap Glock/S&W around in production division and Ruger did some very nice things with the precision rifle so they are obviously paying attention to trends. I'm not a marketing guy, but I think there are some gains to be had in sport shooting with both shotgun and handguns (AR market is oversaturated tbh). Handgun may be late with CZ taking a big chunk (I am reminded when I started, everyone shot glocks, now we all have shadows....), but limited may have some gains to be taken. Remington is washed up so its good to have a replacement. Ruger has made some strong strides over the years, so fingers crossed they dont screw the pooch on this one.
  6. An alternative is to call Liberty Optics. They have a great rep over at Sniper's hide and while he is fairly LR oriented, he can hook you up with a great scope with the features you want.
  7. Rock Island does make a 40 cal. 51738 is product number. Yes the thread here deals mostly with the 9mm version. Otherwise see if your local group has anything for sale. Best bet for buying used before taking a chance on a stranger. (sorry but the voices tell me not to trust people on the internet when buying expensive stuff)
  8. Week 1 Checkin: 5 days exercise. 6 days of 'good nutrition' Not Good on Dryfire--Sporadic at best. Self Diagnosis: Working on grip and draw and first sight picture. With a 'new' grip--As a right hander I got some tips to rotate my support hand and move it more foraward in my grip. Originally my right hand thumb ended at the knuckle of my left hand thumb. By rotating and positioning a bit farther forward that right hand thumb is now more towards the base of my thumb, maybe 1 inch from wrist. This helped with a more consistent draw and easier time lining up sights. Have not measured time difference, but it is definitely more consistent and I am not 'searching for the sight' on the draw as much. This also positions the gun a bit more 'muzzle up' by a few degrees. Suggests with some tweaking I may get a very flat draw right into my target sight. Second on dry fire I found 'the jerk' -- I can dry fire without moving the sights, and thought I might have a pre-ignition push (classic left+low). It still may be there. However when trying rapid pairs, was definitely jerking the trigger and moving the gun. Worked on a smoother trigger pull and not just slamming the trigger to the rear as hard as possible as when you hit the stop, that energy goes into the pistol. Sounds like a 'well duh' moment, but when you see it..... Wed match was canceled for Weather and Saturday I had business to tend too. Sunday was Sunday school (get to church fools--I teach preschool definitly worth it to remind us that being 5 is about as awesome as it gets) so that shot up much of Sunday. Plus it was cold and I was feeling old. Goals: Want to break that 10% weight loss by Friday Doc appoint. 3 Dedicated 30 m in Dryfire sessions 1 livefire with dummy rounds to check for ignition push + checking new grip and trigger method for accuracy at 15+ yards. 7 days exercise No cheat days like last Friday on food.
  9. Practice day. Same stage 3 times. https://youtu.be/crpd7AA1xEU https://youtu.be/psfh-ix4Ln8 https://youtu.be/SDN0RvkGD_4
  10. As a former inmate of IL, do make sure to check the local ordinances as well. While generally they go after things like 'Assault Rifles' many of the suburbs also have restrictive laws just as bad as Chicago. It is definitely a minefield. Lombard does not ring a bell, BUT check and double check. Also check your route TO and FROM the hotel if your firearm will be in your possession. Yes, you may be protected under a transportation clauses of the law. I would not expect a local policeman to know those codes. The reason IL gets a bad rap is the area IN and AROUND Chicago. Some of those cities are bad. The trick is knowing which ones.
  11. Showing my son a Stock 2. LGS Dood: "yeah those CZ knock offs are getting real popular"
  12. My range/training diary. Feedback welcome. Go easy on the weight comments. I make fun of it, but its a sore spot. Dec/Jan 2018. 2018 I am making a commitment to shooting. I deserve it . It makes me happy but being an Alpha+ Personality, sucking hurts and hurts bad. Starting Equipment and gear: Shadow 2, Cajun Custom Extended FP and Reduced Power Mainspring. My birthday gift last year after I lost my mom. January: Exercise was tough this month with new job. Being out of shape, exercise/nutrition is #1 for training. 13/31 Days of 30 mins+ exercise Dryfire Practice: Minimal 3x of DA trigger pulls plus draws to blank wall. Feb: 7 day exercise streak starting Jan 27. Weight: 364 (at nutrionist), -36 lbs total Jan 27: Local Practice day Livefire: 5/5 on Texas Star. Shot wrong order, but still cleaned. Need to work on mental focus/mistakes Jan 28-Feb4 Exercise 7x Nutrition Goals 7x (under 2500 cals) Dryfire: None Livefire: Rifle on 2/3 . Fun shooting w. son. Worked trigger control on 30-30, 300 Sav, 308. 5 shot 3/4 in group at 50 yards (sighting in scope--bonus was actually ON TARGET group as in BULLSEYE), steel ammo, 2 called fliers. 2 inch rapid fire group at 50 yards. Match 2/4 (IDPA scoring, USPSA rules) Stage 1: Anxiety to 11. Handgun Shaking. Not seeing ignition. Multiple misses on steel at 20 yards. 1 Charlie. Last Place Stage 2: Smoother. 4 steel targets at about 15 (6 total shots), reload repeat. 19.11 seconds. only 2 misses. 18/20 people Stage 3: Steel targets at range still an issue. 1 Charlie on that stupid long range paper target. Thought I had cleared the 4 steel at the end and the RO keep timer running expecting me to take a make up shot. Since I can't hear or see anything, I have no clue that I missed it. Ugh. Lots of time at the end Stage 4. Best stage. 4 LR steel again (small targets, med distance). Clean those, Clean run. 1 Charlie. 17/20 people. (32 round count) Stage 5. 5 med range small target, reload 2 med range paper. Time is 29.3. I swear I did this better as this felt like a good quick run (for me). 20/20 Stage 6. The F**K up. 32 round count stage and we have to move a suitcase from one side to another. I pick up the suitcase and remember I forgot a target array as I am moving. I can go back, but decide to come back to those targets. Long range steel again messes with me and I decide to just take misses. In the meantime, I also forgtet the mirror array of 2 targets of the first 2 targets I forget. Once I end the stage, I realize I forgot to go back to the original 2 I forgot, and then the RO gives me some friendly teasing about the 4 targets. all the screwups add 30 seconds to stage time. 20/20 Also my camera guy couldn't figure out my phone so I got no recording. *le sigh* . Pictures did show an unbalanced stance. Charlies almost always low left or at least left. Overall 20/20 places. Without the giant stage 6 pooch screwing and the confusion on 3 adding a ton of time, could have made it to 17/20. This week (2/5)--dryfire, dryfire, dryfire more. Goals: Work on stance, draw, grip, presentation. Tape laserpointer to gun and watch trigger motion Livefire Goals: See the 'ignition' of the gun and keep sight picture 100% Dummy rounds to catch pre-ignition push. Maybe steel match wednesday Meds Everyday (can't shoot if you have Heart Attack, and I've been cheating by skipping several thinking I had had diabetes licked) Exercise streak to 14 Calories under 2500. Will post videos from Dec Session. baseline: Draw and fire 1 shot, no target blank wall: avg 2.8 seconds With Hand on gun, draw and fire on blank wall: 2.2 seconds (best 1.8) Reaction from beep to slap timer: hands above head .65 seconds avg Definitely have muscle memory issues bring the gun up with sights psuedo aligned. I can get the gun up, but finding the sight costs a ton of time. WIP
  13. I was not going to be last for the first time ever. Wasn't having a 'good' match, but there were some good moments and thought maybe I could one day actually be good at this. Last stage we had to carry a suitcase around and it threw me off. As soon as I picked it up, I knew I forgot a target array. That mental FUBAR then caused me to forget my plan and I forgot the opposing array on the other side. Forgot 4 targets in total. Got last again.
  14. Hah I'll drop down here and hit you with the same advice: Check out the North Texas Lead Farmers on Facebook--that seems to be the biggest online group that can help you get hooked up with matches. shootmatch.com also is pretty well represented for Texas. I think you mentioned being farther north so definitly surf around for clubs outside of DFW (because we all assume North TX= Dallas) if you are in the outer perimeter. DFW tends to favor the SW side of town for some reason, which we all know can be a trip and a half.
  15. THere are some shooting clubs up farther north but I am not as familiar with them. DFW Area seems to favor the South and West side of town which sucks for us NE guys. Collin County shoots at Mission 160 (anna/McKinney), and some other 'northern' sites. Proactice Defense/Quail Creek is in Northlake where the Lead Farmers is sort of based. Then there is a ton of south (ETTS) and West (Cross Timbers, Johnson Country, Triple C) of the area.
  16. From the wayback machine when I used to actually be athletic: Night before: Carbs. Carbs feed your muscles and your brain (gotta remember those stage plans). Carb Loading 24-48 hours before. A normal carb dosage with day of breakkfast. Fats. Lowfat. While fats are important, most of our modern diet has too much. Protein: Day of--Breakfast. Health Dose of Lean protein to help keep you feeling full longer. Avoids the hunger crash when food might not be available for a long time. Water: Since you need to be training, even if you taper, lots of fluids 72 oz or more the bigger you are (I was 6'1 220 at 'fighting weight' I kept close to 128 oz of fluid). Try an avoid too much fiber and dairy near match time as it can cause irritation and bloating.
  17. You sir, are the devil =) Been looking up on the TS as well. Definitely a viable alternative now that I cleared up the dif between TS and TSO.
  18. Is the flat trigger a drop in or does it require fitting? I've had some bad experience refitting parts *cough 1911 cough*. Comfortable with minor smithing, but custom stuff makes me nervous.
  19. This one is tough to search for as I believe the Tango Limited is where people start with a Limited Division gun. Its also been a little rough figuring out the models from the web. so here goes: 1. My initial guess is that the Tango Limited is SAO and the starting point of a Limited Division pistol 2. What are the 'standard' modifications people do to get the gun competition ready? Aka what is stock trigger pull? What is stock reliability? Keep the magwell? 3. Mags. Coming from 1911s I know quality mags solve 90% of issues. What are the mag options for solid 20 round (the standard I am guessing) magazines. Why tanfo? My stock 2 is a boss gun, and I understand these are similar (not exact). TS Orange is the new hotness, but I am also know Tango is a good option plus getting one in stainless. TYIA
  20. Laugh all you want--I have depression AND diabetes on the run. Hit 300 on the scale. (Yes I am coming DOWN to 300--but I can now do 5ks). Get Classified Hit C class Not come in last Cure Pre-ignition push, trigger jerk 1 match per month 1 Large Match. Live Practice/Shooting Twice per month. Maintain 6 exercise per week. Make it a baker's dozen Revo->1911-->Beretta->M&P-->Beretta->Shadow-->I SO WANT AN STI
  21. Awesome. I have been very bad this week with dry fire practice, but I have been exercising (I have a lot of areas to improve!). I'l still jacking with the idea of playing in limited even though I LOVE that Shadow 2. You've definitely come to the right place -- can't help you much with Proactive as I am a ghetto East Side Member.
  22. Hey Hey, if you are a North Texas person and in the DFW area be sure to hook up with the North Texas Lead Farmers on facebook. Its a good way to get hooked into the shooting scene in North Texas. Rather than a formal club, its more like a hangout. Also Ryan, who sorta is our defacto leader holds practice day which is a great way to practice (duh) and kinda get a mini-class once a month. Plus you get to hang out with the other idiots like me. Its kinda a gateway group to the other individual shooting clubs around DFW. Don't be a stranger and tell em the Crazy Cat dude sent ya (my facebook pic is a surly gangster cat because reasons).
  23. Thanks..I remember the 'as it should be' upgrades, but I didn't actually know what they were. Believe me I've read the FAQ like 10 times (Even if I am doing a 650 first).
  24. Is there still a recommended list for purchasing the 650 as a first time reloader? I'd like to make sure I am not missing something
