  1. Got my 930 barrel back today from GunCat (Steve at Rose Action Sports). He cut it back to 24", threaded it for choke tubes and reinstalled the front sight. Great work at great price. And only 13 days from when I mailed it from Idaho to Steve in Kentucky and back to me. Top quality work that I would recommend to anyone needing barrel work. Took the gun out to the range tonight to give it a try and get the Nordic mag spring cut to length (add a +5 mag tube). Have never been a big fan of shooting the shotgun in 3 gun (was using a Mossberg 500) because it seemed slow. Now I need to buy shells by the case because this gun is a lot of fun to shoot and it shoots in a hurry. Can't wait for the next 3 gun match.
  2. Looks like the mag tube is coated, the hammer and perhaps other trigger components. Is the bolt or other parts coated? Couldn't tell that they were when looking at the JM version. How much of a difference will that really make? Seems it it like getting the BCG on an AR hard chromed, can help with cleaning but may not necessarily add to amount of shooting between cleaning and life of the gun. From my perspective it still comes to down to how much effort to find the gun and how long would it take. Here in SE Idaho there are 5 to maybe 6 shops at most within a 75 mile radius that might have a JM version. If a person is willing to wait to find the JM version and perhaps pay a premium that is up to them. If you don't want to wait, you can get an almost identical gun with a little work in ordering parts and having some barrel work done.
  3. Contact GunCat who posts here. He has a 28" 930 barrel i sent him that will be cut back to 24", threaded for choke tubes, the front sight reinstalled and shipped back to me at a great price. Decided to use him after reading others comment on his work.
  4. I think it depends upon how fast and how much you want to pay for a JM version. Friend just bought a 22" JM for $600 which is a great price. Shop isn't sure when they will get another. Last week I bought a new 930 Waterfowl for $400. Barrel has been sent to GunCat and for $90 he is cutting it back to 24", threading for the choke tube, reinstalling the front sight and that includes return shipping. Have ordered a +5 Nordic extension and barrel clamp from Midway. By this time I will be into the gun for about the same as what my friend paid for his. I will need to open up loading port which I don't mind doing at all. And I will weld up the lifter. Still trying to figure out what I want to do with the bolt handle so will have some additional cost there. I noticed on the JM version that the port is opened up but there were two very sharp points where the pivot pin for the bolt release is at. Just a little rounding over there will fix that. Also saw that there was no relief cut made at the front of the loading port over the mag tube. From what I have seen on pictures here that looks like a good way to ensure getting the shells into the mag tube more easily. And what probably surprised me the most is the lifter is just like on the other 930s. Thought that would be extended so not to be a thumb catcher. If you look around as suggested you can probably find a JM version. Question is what will it sell for and how long before they are more readily available (which should get the price back down)? Last one I followed on Gunbroker (closed last week) went for $755.
  5. Mine comes in at 8lb, 3 oz. Ace stock, 20" govt profile barrel, free float aluminum forend (someday I will flute it) and a Vortex 1-4x HS.
  6. Had my first opportunity to shoot at the MGM double spinner on Saturday using both a handgun and shotgun. A friend bought one and we tried different things to see what worked best. One thing we did not do was to shoot at the top first with a shotgun. Does this work better and why? We tried shooting a the top first with a handgun but found it easier hit the bottom first because we could double tap it easily. Seemed heavier shotgun loads worked better but I did manage to spin it with two shots using 1 1/8 oz loads. Thinking next practice round with this will try some 1 1/4 loads and some #4 buckshot to see how they do. Have to say that getting it to spin is all about timing. You cannot shoot it like you do other targets in that if you get into a hurry you can shoot it going the wrong direction and just about stop it with only one shot.
  7. I have a Vortex Viper 1-4x HS (covered turret caps) in a Primary Arms AR 15 mount. Cost on both (used a Midway discount on the scope) was about $500. I am not a fan of illuminated reticles for daylight shooting and like a more traditional (non horseshoe) reticle. The reticle on the Vortex is very quick to pick up on close targets and precise enough that I can hit an 8" steel plate at 400 yards with no problem. Not having looked through a Burris scope I can't compare optics but the Vortex are very, very good. My son bought the Viper PST and a Burris P.E.P.R. mount. I like the more streamlined contour of the HS (and it was a little less money) and while the Burris mount is OK for me it is too big with rails on top. The Primary arms mount is much slimmer and just as good in my opinion.
  8. I have a Vortex 1-4x HS. Bought it because my son bought a Vortex 1-4x PST. I couldn't believe clear the glass was on his so got mine (minus the exposed adjustable turrets on his). We have used them in matches at ranges from 10 feet to 200 yards and it works great. At the range yesterday and hitting a 8" steel gong at 400 yards was not a problem.
  9. We do not have a USPSA club in Pocatello. Idaho Falls is the closest club to this area. We are having a 3-gun shoot on Saturday, 9/17. This is not a formal, high level competition one. Just a bunch of us who get together to have fun shooting. Cost is $5 to shoot. We start at 11 AM.
