Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have seen 2 types of Fed NT cases. Some as you say with crimped pockets. These have normal sized flashholes. I have also seen Fed NT marked cases without a crimped pocket but these have enlarged flashholes. I think Federal (and the others) is still experimenting with non toxic ammunition.
  2. Stopped using Winchester primers (and everything else) after the LR primer fiasco of a few years back. Now use mostly Federal, never had an issue with those and I use well over 50K a year as the family designated reloader.
  3. I was responding to BoyGlock's earlier post.
  4. Yes, thats the one. He has an eBay site (armanov_com). His flip cover is a heavy machined anodised aluminium unit that is included with the gauge as standard. He doesn't appear to have 40 cal but I'm assume he is a small operation that would tool up if there was enough interest, say a group buy. When I ordered my gauge I found communication with him was easy.
  5. Wanted to get one of these for some time but either sources wouldn't ship internationally or the postage almost doubled the cost. Found a seller on eBay that is based in Slovenia that makes an anodised match grade gauge complete with a flipper lid that shipped DownUnder for a fraction of the cost of US postage. Very pleased with the unit so would recommend it especially for anybody not based in USA.
  6. That's not really a fair comparison of Lee products. The price reflects the warranty because you pay for the warranty with others brands. Without naming names but green and orange come to mind, some of those "lifetime" warranties aren't as easy to access as the net would have you believe. The few times I've had to deal with Lee "out of warranty", they have been very generous. I have over a dozen cartidge presses (not including shotshell) of all colors and my most used single stage press is the Lee Classic cast. I have 3 Hornady powder measures courtesy of the LNL APs they came with and I use Lee Autodrums on those presses. I bought every brand of 9mm die in my quest for perfection for reloading on a progressive. I mix and match and ended using Lee FLS and expand/powder drop. I intend buying one of these Breech Lock Pro once they have been around a while, just to speed up FLS/depriming and preliminary neck expanding of 38/357 before they get tumble washed.
  7. Yep. crimped primer pockets AND larger than norm flash holes. Work OK for standard loads if you can be bothered swaging the crimp out.
  8. Lent my ProChrono to a friend (after I bought a Labradar) and he promptly grazed the unit. Just a small gouge on the side but it was enough to kill it. Said a wind gust tilted the chrono just as he fired
  9. Have 3, 2 running on LnL's and the third on a LCT. The 9mm LnL has seen at least 50K run through the AutoDrum without the slightest issue. It was a set and forget from the beginning using WSF or WAC. The others are repeatedly moved to different die sets and have drum changes. Haven't had the same volume but again no issues. Yes, I would prefer that they were made of higher quality materials and there are a few other changes I would like to see like the hopper more securely attached but it does work as advertised. Really like the small footprint on the press compared to the other powder measures.
  10. The digital electronic micrometer only has a 12 month warranty. Looks identical to a couple I have that lasted for a couple of years then repeatedly changed zero by significant amounts.
  11. Like many here I've all but given up on low to medium end digital electronic calipers. They all go flaky eventually but the real problem is not when it is consistently obvious but the random false reading or zero shift. Wouldn't worry about 0.001 either but it's usually more like 25 times that. There is a reason companies like RCBS only warrant their electronic products for 12 months. http://www.cabelas.com/product/RCBS-reg-Electronic-Digital-Caliper/740552.uts My old Lyman dial caliper is still going strong after decades of use and coincidently a new metric dial caliper arrived today.
  12. Common problem with all brands of progressives. Case mouth tilts a bit and catches on the edge of the carbide ring.. Both Dillon and Redding make dies specifically for progressive presses with a larger radius at the mouth to guide cases into the die. The downside is that the case may not be sized as far down as you might like. For what it's worth I have tried just about every brand of carbide (and steel) die in 357 and 9mm except Dillon and settled for the Lee as the best compromise between sizing vs the occasional hangup.
  13. The J5 is a date code; http://leeprecision.net/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/457/14/identifying-the-markings-or-stampings-on-dies As d-striker said, if it's the Carbide crimp it has a carbide ring and should have an adjustment knob. Lee makes but does not even recommend their standard taper crimp die if you have a current (post1986) Lee pistol die set. http://leeprecision.com/reloading-dies/hand-gun-dies/taper-crimp-die/
  14. A friend of mine who is a commercial reloader developed this problem when he went to wet tumbling brass which still had the primers. After drying he would leave them, often for weeks before running a large batch through an automated reloading machine. Found that he had a significant number of .primers that refused to budge but just had the decap pin punch a hole through them. He surmised that the wet cleaning had somehow caused corrosion that bonded the primer to the pocket. This was a machine that had no trouble decapping crimped primers.
  15. I run my loaded rounds through the tumbler just like JCC7x7 and for the same reasons. 10-15 minutes in clean walnut reserved just for the purpose. Every now and then with range brass you'll find one has lost it's primer in the media. Haven't had a problem losing a primer in the mag since starting this and it adds very little time to the reloading process.
