Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Make sure a 16 - 18.5 pound recoil spring is installed. A lot of bullseye shooters run light springs (~12lb) which will severely beat your slide when you shoot ammunition that makes major power factor. I have seen a guy crack a slide when he bought the gun used, didn't check the recoil spring weight, and shot a bunch of hardball through it. The collet bushing was made of spring steel and brought out by Colt in the '70's. Production ran until (I believe) the late '80's. They usually don't cause a problem; however, if the inside diameter of the slide was machined too small the fingers of the bushing are stressed and can break.
  2. I collect USGI Colts and consider a refinished pistol (even a good restoration by the likes of Doug Turnbull) to be priced as zero percent remaining finish. If you are looking to be able to recoup the cost of the pistol at a later date, think again. Take a look at a recent GunBroker auction. Somebody lost their shirt as the refinish ended up costing more than the entire pistol sold for. Looks does not trump originality.
  3. We're going to need better pictures to make an accurate estimate of value.
  4. I cast my 230 grain 45's with a 13 BHN lead alloy and 4.9 grains of Bullseye. I find this combination to produce very little smoke and lead fouling.
  5. I have been happy with both the Tripp Research 10R-45-RG and Wilson Combat 47T magazines.
