Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Sounds very possible to be any of those three things. The extractor and ejector both seem to be in good shape. Sounds like the load is too light. Easy enough to knock it up a couple tenths and see if it clears up.
  2. Smith and Wesson M&P40. This is one of the early models that is from release. S/N MPA6XXX
  3. I was looking to see if anyone could take a look at these pictures and see if they could give me an idea of what is causing this issue and any idea of fixes? Is it a reloading issue (too light of a load possibly) or a gun issue? These were mixed brass .40 S&W loaded with 4.9gr of Universal Clays, frontier cmj 180gr, don't recall the the oal without checking my book. Thanks for taking a look, Ryan
  4. Did you consider getting the Strong Mount? I have the same bench, slightly different dimensions, but same 2x4 kit, and I used the Strong Mount. No need for the extra 2x6. See post #987 for pictures of my bench. I thought about it but I like the height it's at already and didn't need it any higher. And I already had plenty of wood and hardware vs. having to spend more money for the strong mount. I bet the strong mount is nice, but I doubt it's any more stable than the way I have it now. Did you add any bracing to the table? What did you think of the kit? I thought it was a waste of money. The hardware was junk so I pretty much paid for four pieces of plastic, next time I'll just build everything from scratch. I just spent another 200 buying .223 dies, a tool head and a few other little things. The next thing on my list will be a machine cover and the roller handle. This reloading is getting expensive...now if only I could start saving

    Vacation pics

Amazing pictures, looks like a great trip. I'll need to add this to my list of places to see. I wouldn't mind camping under the stars out there in the near future!
  6. Here is my bench that I built last week. My lighting sucked since I only had one incandescent light bulb in my work area. I took that light out and wired in two dual bulb T8 fluorescent lights. Added an extra outlet to the basement, and then wired my bench with two outlets which are run via extension cord. Gives me the ability to move the bench around (if I ever need to) without being tied to the wall, I'm happy with it so far. I'll bet that I'm going to wish that I built the bench even bigger but this works for now and I don't have a ton of space since I live in a townhouse. The bench is 5 feet by 2 1/2 feet. 2x4 framework, 3/4 inch OSB shelf and the top is 3/4 inch plywood. The table is then braced with five 2x6's and seems really solid. I used the 2x4 basics kit thinking it would be easier and save time...really wasn't worth the money and ended up replacing all of the screws b/c they were too short and weak. I didn't have any overhang in the top so the press wouldn't mount to the edge like I wanted. Decided to use another piece of 2x6 as a mounting plate. So the press mounts through 2 2x6s and the 3/4 plywood and doesn't flex at all! Now for a few pics.
  7. I guess I'll just go and do and test fire and see how it goes. I'll adjust my dies and start making changes on my next batch once this is done. Definately need more Q/A checks early on! On a side note, I had finished the bench last week, but my lighting sucked since I only had one incandescent light bulb in my work area. Took that light out and wired in two dual bulb T8 fluorescent lights. Added an extra outlet to the basement, and then wired my bench with two outlets which are run via extension cord. 8. My opinion is your OAL/COL is a bit long, it should measure at 1.125.and your taper crimp should be atleast at .420 from my Hornady manual; Tightgroup starting load is 2.1 , max is 4.8 and for clays univ starting load is 3.8 and max is 5.3! Good luck! I know that is what the hornady manual says, it's one of the books I referenced 'after' I loaded the rounds. (mistake #1). The second mistake was not chamber checking after a few rounds. The first few I loaded all seemed good on the calipers and the powder checks throughout the loading seemed good. The third mistake was loading 50 rounds. I'm thinking I'll just pull them all and start over. I don't know what is causing the binding since OAL doesn't seem to be OAL/COL seems to vary for rounds that both do and don't chamber. I'll just have to recheck all my dies and start fresh. I've got plenty of other ammo to shoot in the mean time. Can you remove the decapping pin in dillon pistol dies so I can resize them but reuse the primers?
  9. I'm using dillion 40S&W/10mm dies and I'm sure they are taper crimped. The bullets are I'm using are these ones to be exact... http://www.missouribullet.com/details.php?prodId=79&category=5&secondary=11&keywords=
  10. At the base it reads .4195, at the mid point .4200, and .4225 near the head/crimp. The OAL is a bit long on most of the cases, but some that aren't dropping free on the chamber check range from 1.1380, 1.1365, 1.1350, 1.1315 , at the same time, some that drop free 1.1300, 1.1310,1.1385, and 1.1390 so I thought the sizing or crimp my more likely be the issue.
  11. I had the die set to size at max oal of 1.135 and it loads from 1.130 to 1.1395 I chambered checked the rounds and they drop in fine but not out...Is this a sizing issue or not enough crimp? And to make things worse I'm worried that I loaded them to hot and may go ahead and pull them. Hogdon lists the loading data for Universal as 5.0 to 5.8 max for 180gr. I loaded 180gr lead bullets at 5.2. But after looking at some other manuals they are calling 5.2 a max load for universal. Hornady says for 180gr 4.2 to 5.2 max and 180gr swc as 3.8 to 5.3. The Lee manual is more inline with the Hogdon info. Am I overthinking this? It can be your crimp! whats your crimp set at? and if your OAL is a little long, seat your bullet lower and drop your powder down a little.. how many manuals are you useing as referece? you gotta use more then just one, and go by your manual it should be fine! when you chamber check em, does it go down in all the way and when you try to take em out does it feel like there is a bit of a buldge at the lower part of the brass be for getting to the head stamp? +1 on on the sizing die set a notch above the plate. I also had and once in a while come across a problem loading for this cal.... I'm not sure what the crimp is set at....how do I check this? I thought it was a done by look kind of thing. I think the OAL is off b/c I didn't set the seating die with any other shells in the plate. I loaded some single stage style (one round in the plate through each station), and then more progessively. The round drops in the the chamber with no issues to the right depth, but you can turn the barrel over and it stays in unless you tap it a bit or pull the case out (all by hand, no tools needed to pull it out). The cases don't seem bulged anywhere and but they are reading higher near the bullet/seating area with my calipers. I thought the resizing die was low enough, I turned it all the way until it touched the plate and backed it off somewhere near 1/4 of a turn. I used the lee manual for 180gr xtp (they didn't list Universal for 180gr lead). Later I checked the Hornady manual and it says 180gr bullets 4.2 for 800fps up to 5.2 max load for 950 fps. It shows a 180gr SWC (discontinued) with the same powder starting at 3.8gr and going to 5.3gr max. The last place I checked was the was the Hogdon website which says for 180 GR. HDY XTP to start at 5.0 with a max of 5.8. I should have checked all three first, but went with the Lee manual, guess I was just too excited to get started. I loaded 50 rounds and read my books later that night...had me thinking twice now about shooting them. I haven't loaded anything else since I want to do this safely and need to slow down and work these loads up correctly.

  13. She's actually into shooting already...not as much as me but she does like to go shooting. She's shot my M&P .40, Walther P22 and M&P 15. She's skipped the Mossberg 500, but she did take a skeet and trap class with me last year and shot the 12 and 16 gauge o/u's. I haven't had any good offers of the .45 bullets and casings...I'm not that motivated to get rid of them so I may just end up putting them in the ammo can and storing them until I get a .45 . I'll pick it up when the time is right but will just shoot what I've got already since I don't get out enough as it is. I built the bench last week and have everything up and running. Loaded a small batch 50 using the press more like a single stage to get used to the steps involved and am not worried about any speed right now. Weighing every few charges, checking OAL, and barrel checking each round. So far so good, now I need to go out and shoot them and see how it goes before cranking any more out. Do the Dillon dies only size part of the case? It seems like they only size the first 2/3rd's of the case and since all the brass I have has come from a mix of guns I thought a full length resizing would be best the first time I run them through the press. Another question...why do rounds come out with different OAL when I haven't changed the dies settings? Can't seem to wrap my brain around that... Ryan
