Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. thanks for the responses. I'm going to get a beam scale to run a check every now and then against my electronic one.
  2. What's the best, most accurate Powder scale to use for reloading? I've been reloading my 45 colt for about a year now, but just recently started reloading 45ACP. Bought some Clays powder to try and noticed the variance between the Starting Grains and Never Exceed was only .3. Starting grains at 3.7 and Never Exceed at 4.0. I have a small digital scale the reads out in .1 increments but sometimes I watched the reading kind of fluctuate before it settles on something. Loading 45ACP. 230gr FMJ bullets Just how DEAD NUTS on the number do I have to be? If I have to be, then what's the best scale to use? Thanks again guys!
  3. Thanks a lot for that explanation and walkthrough. Using that information here's what I have - 1 - Sizing the case I end up with .468 2 - After flaring I end up with .471 3 - After bullet seating and crimp I now end up with .469/.4695 and OAL of 1.262. I think because of my experience with my 45 Colt dies I was expecting to need more of a visible crimp on the end. Now, I'll just have to see how they cycle through my Springfield XD, probably on Monday. Oh! And I did take apart the die and clean it. It still seems to be putting a micro small dent in the case end. I've already contacted Lee and they said to send it to them with a dummy round and they will replace it. thanks for your help!
  4. Here's a pic of the latest. Plus, out of 10 reloads it is putting this little dent at the end of 2 of them. Is that just garbage in the die? Where the bullet is seated into the brass it measures .472. As close as I can measure to the end with my Mic., it is .471. These latest 10 that I have done, I have not tried to shoot yet. Under a scope it looks like the crimp is scaping the crimp on vs. just bending the lip over. I have probably only reloaded 50 or less rounds on these new dies.
  5. Hi all, Got some questions answered in a different thread pertaining to this. But, I'm still having a problem achieving what I believe is a acceptable crimp. I have a Lee Pro 1000 Progressive press w/45ACP die set I believe I finally have a decent crimp where the die doesn't seem to be touching the bullet. I actually had a situation where the die was putting a dent in the bullet. Now that I think I've gotten it set correctly, I looked at it under a scope, and the small crimp area at the end of the case looks really rough. It sure doesn't look like the nice crimp I get on my 45Colt rounds. The roughness makes me wonder if it is going to affect case life. The crimp die on this Lee Pro 1000 does two things; sets bullet depth and then crimps. With a brand new die I would expect a smooth crimp on the top of the case. Any suggestions on what's going on? I am in contact with the Lee factory and requesting a replacement combination die. No answer back yet. I've included a picture of the dent the die was putting in the bullet. I understand it could just be me! Any help appreciated. I have found a load I like, but without the crimp being correct I don't have much luck having them cycle through my Springfield XD. Some just won't enter the chamber.
  6. I think everyone else covered everything. I do it because the off the shelf loads are way too hot for Cowboy Action shooting. I shoot 45Colt in my pistols and my lever action Rifle, and keep my loads light as to stay on target. Plus, Cowboy Action targets are pretty close. Actually, sometimes they're too close for me to really enjoy it. All depends who sets up the stage. Reloading helps me keep my loads light and I enjoy just sittin down and doin up a couple hundred rounds.
  7. Well, first I bought a new scale that would read in .1 increments. Then I did up 10 rounds with 4.9-5.0gr of HP38. These seemed to work OK. I will be going to the 200gr FMJ bullets, and probably switching powder to Titegroup. Had a lot of recommendations on that. However, I am having a bit of problem determining if I am achieving the proper crimp on these ACP rounds. I have calipers to check it. Anyone know the figure I should be looking for?
  8. thanks for that suggestion Dave. I will give that a try over the next few days.
  9. Hi All, New to the forum. New to Practical shooting as well. New to the USPSA. You get the picture! Not new to reloading. I've been reloading my Cowboy rounds for quite a while now. I only have Hodgdon HP38 on hand so that is what I used for the reloads I need help with. Handgun - Springfield XD 45ACP 230gr. FMJ bullet Starting grains per Hodgdon chart for HP38 (4.2gr.) Actually had a few that weighed in at 4.5gr each. I just did up 10 rounds and went to the range. Put a single round in and it barely had enough juice to eject the round. Shot the remainder of the 10 one at a time. Had several stovepipes and some that just wouldn't eject. I'm thinking that even if I used the never exceed grain amount for HP38, it probably wouldn't give me what I'm after. What Powder would be the best to use for reloads on these 45ACP, using a 230gr FMJ bullet?? I have quite a few 230gr FMJ bullets left and would like to use them up. Should I go to 200gr FMJ? Looking a load that will give me the low recoil and operate safely when I load the mag with 13 rounds. Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Spades Arizona
  10. Hi all, I've been active in Cowboy Action shooting for awhile. Hopefully, I'm going to get to my first Practical shoot in a couple weeks. Something has been always coming up to prevent me from making it. I'll be starting with my Springfield XD 45ACP. It's what I currently have. Already joined USPSA! Going to head over to the forum that deals with reloading. Looks like this forum gets a lot of activity. Hope to learn a lot here! Spades Arizona City, AZ
