Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I appreciate everyones input. Your experience is saving me time & in this market, even more importantly valuable primers, powder & bullets! I've come accross several pounds of Power Pistol and Winchester WST powder. Anyone have experience loading these powders with 124gr Montana Golds & 147gr Zero's to feed their 75 SP-01 Shadow Custom? Thanks again for the valuable input
  2. Okay, a quick update. I've come across a few thousand 147gr zeros. Still have the 8lbs of Tightgroup. Any suggestions...? Also I've heard CZ's like shorter AOL's, maybe it's not so much bullet weight as an AOL issue. Of course there is a balance between weight and AOL without going over-pressure with a given powder charge. Anyone else have some input? It's all very much appreciated.
  3. I don't know what I've got wrong, but purchased identical parts from Graingers and the ejector rod is binding against the completed round as it attempts to eject it from the shellplate. I've tried with a washer above & below bearing, one washer only below bearing, one washer only above bearing & with no washers and bearing only. With each configuration the ejector rod binds. I tried each configuration listed prior with the brand new ejector rod from my spare parts kit with the same results. The parts I purchased from Grainger match the exact dimentions as those from McMaster-Carr. On occasion I can get 3-5 rounds loaded, then the binding begins. It's amazing when not binding, but as of now I've removed both washers & the bearing. I'm frustrated and confused, what's the deal...? Any advise...?
  4. Gator - I will likely be shooting Laredo lead because they are local and I can get a reliable supply. I'm open to various sizes. I've heard that CZ's tend to like the mid-weights, 124-130gr. But your saying 160gr so maybe I'm wrong on that. Are your Bayou Bullets jacketed? Thanks for the info
  5. After drooling for years, I've finally picked up my CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow Custom from CZC. Now I could use some help with proven loads for my new baby. I currently only shoot a local steel match (TNS) so power factor isn't a huge deal, although I would like to transitioni into some USPSA matches in time. Also, I have 8lbs of Titegroup and 4 pounds of Power Pistol on hand and would like to use them if possible with powder being so hard to come by these days. So any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, - Jclan
  6. I've been drooling over the SP01 Shadow Target Custom for over a year and have now seen a number of folks shooting the 75 SA Target. Both guns are from CZ Custom which I'm fortunate to live within 15 miles of, so I've had opportunity to handle them both in their shop. My question is which gun would you purchase and why? What are the advantages of one over the other? I'm shooting Limited with a Browning High Power (it's what I had) at this point and would like to pick up something better suited to this type of shooting. At this point I'm only shooting the Tuesday Night Steel matches at Rio Salado but would like to get into some USPSA shooting in time. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated...
  7. Okay, I'm not new to reloading, but have been using a Dillon Square Deal with solid success. Now I'd like to begin reloading .223 & .308 so I picked up an XL650. My question is what dies to purchase. Are there really any differences? I've been told to go with a 'small base' or 'full length' sizing die since I will be shooting both calibers in semi-auto rifles. I've also read to go with Lee Factory Crimp dies for the same reason. Beyond that, I'm wondering how much if any difference there is between the various manufacturers. I will also be loading 9mm & .357 mag on this new machine and will need dies for these as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm itching to get the 650 up and rollin'. Thanks in advance
  8. J33716, Were do you buy your bullets? I've not found a place with reasonable prices, that's why I've been using the Berryr's.
  9. As promised, here are the results from my some new loads my son used last night at Tuesday Night Steel. On another thread, a couple of proven XDM recipe's were suggested that used Berry's 124gr round nose. All I could find where 124 hollow base flat nose, so I loaded one round to the suggested 1.150" OAL and chamber checked it. It would not slide fully into the chamber as compared to a factory jacketed hollow point round. I then loaded a 115gr round nose to the same OAL and this round slid completely into the chamber just like the factory round. It appears that XDM's (at least my son's) like round nose bullet profiles much better than flat nose. Once exception may be if they are loaded very short, but we did not have success at short OAL's either. So, having Berry's 115gr round nose on hand, I loaded up 200 using 5.0grs WSF to an OAL of 1.167" (recipe from my Speer manual) and they fired flawlessly! So it was a good night... Thank you all again for your help in diagnosing this issue. P.S. I loaded up some trial rounds using Berry's 147gr round nose in front of 3.0grs Solo 1000 to an OAL of 1.150" which also performed perfectly. He loved this load saying it hand significantly reduced recoil.
  10. The problem my son is having is the bullet comes loose from the 'new' round as it is chambered, causing the cartridge to jam against the unseated bullet. Further research has led me to believe that I may be seating the bullet too deeply so that it does not come to rest near enough to the rifling in the barrel? This is causing the bullet to come un-seated once the rim comes into contact with the breach end of the barrel. Basically, there is nothing there to keep the bullet from slidind forward as it comes to a sudden stop. Does this sound accurate? I suppose another solution would be to crimp a bit tighter, which I have been trying to avoid due to bullet deformation and for fear of increasing pressure. Anyway, we are off to shoot tomorrow night on some fine-tuned rounds that have all been 'chamber checked'. I will let you know the results. Thanks again to everyone for your input...
  11. Okay, I'm looking for some tried and proven recipe's for a factory stock (for now) 9mm XDM. Thus far I've only been using Berry's Plated Bullets which I've heard from one other shooter that his XDM didn't like. I have Unique, Solo 1000 and Winchester WSF powders on hand, but am willing to give something else a try as well. Thanks in advance for your help...
  12. jasmap, Since I use all 'range' brass, who knows what it may have been shot through. So the idea would be to drop every loaded round into either a case gage or the actuall gun barrell before a match? That is not too difficult an endeavor while sitting down relaxing. I use a Dillon SDB, so I don't have the luxury of a Lee "U" die at this point. Would you mind sharing some of your XDM loads? We have been using the Berry's plated bullets due to cost. Do you have any other suggestions that are reasonable? We have used the 124's exclusively thus far, but just picked up some 147's. I'm hearing they recoil is easier to manage with a heavier bullet/fast powder. Your thoughts?
  13. No, I have not/do not case gage or chamber check my ammo. Can you be a bit more specific about chamber checking? I have done quite a lot of reloading, but most of it for revolvers which are not very fussy. As I'm learning, auto's a way more picky about what they digest. Do either of you know anything to look for specifically with regards to the XDM? as I say, this same ammo work without a hitch in my Hi-Power. Thanks for your willingness to help, - Todd
  14. I'm having trouble keeping my son's new XDM from jamming with our reloads. Using 4.6gr Win. WSF behind 124gr Berry's plated bullet & Remington 1 1/2 primers in mixed brass with an AOL of 1.107". This worked like a champ the first couple of times we competed and now has begun jamming. This same load works flawlessly in my Browning Hi-power. Any ideas...?
  15. Okay, so anything to assist us lowly SDB users? Mine is squeaking and groaning something awful. It's painful to use at this point, feels like I'm abusing her. I have used a couple drops of machine oil to quiet down the worst of it, but I know it's time for a thorough clean/lube job. Anyone have some help for us SDB'ers?
