  1. earlier in the day. .. we are lucky to have a big 20 acre off-leash dog park super close to our house, so she gets to go run and run and swim and swim and fetch and wrastle every day. Danes are super low energy though. She mostly sleeps and grows when in the house. Thanks for the tip on the doggles. We're looking into getting a pair of those as well before we leave. Really glad we didn't get her ears cropped. Don't know how this would have worked if they were as they wouldn't be fully standing yet on their own.
  2. Picked these up for the pup since she'll be coming with us to a rifle class while on a road trip this summer. Wife had to drive out to an airplane supply store to get them, but I think these'll work good.
  3. Came across this and though it might be ripe for captioning from the photoshop jockeys here:
  4. CCW: SAF, Calguns Challenge Arbitrary Denial of Right to Bear Arms In California BELLEVUE, WA and REDWOOD CITY, CA – The Second Amendment Foundation, The Calguns Foundation and three California residents today filed a lawsuit seeking to vindicate the right to bear arms against arbitrary state infringement. Nearly all states allow qualified law-abiding citizens to carry guns for self-defense, but a few states allow local officials to arbitrarily decide who may exercise this core Second Amendment right. In the action filed today, Plaintiffs challenge the policies of two California Sheriffs, in Sacramento and Yolo counties, who reject the basic human right of self defense by refusing to issue ordinary people gun carry permits. Of course, violent criminals in the impacted counties continue to carry guns without police permission. State scientist Deanna Sykes believes her sexual orientation and small stature makes her an appealing target for criminals, particularly as she often transports firearms as a competitive shooter and firearms instructor. “I am highly qualified to defend myself against the sort of crime that the Sheriff cannot, despite his best efforts, completely eradicate,” Sykes said. “Violent crime is a real risk in our society, but happily, we enjoy the right to defend ourselves from it.” Andrew Witham has over 15 years experience as a police officer in Britain, and is licensed to carry a firearm while working as a private investigator and campus public safety officer. But despite having been the target of death threats stemming from his work in security, Sheriff John McGinness saw to it that Witham’s license to carry a gun while away from work was revoked upon Witham’s relocation to Sacramento. “I’m allowed to defend other people,” said Witham, “so why can’t I defend myself, where the Bill of Rights guarantees me that right?” Adam Richards, a Northern California attorney, would also exercise his right to bear arms in self- defense. But the Yolo County Sheriff’s policy on gun permit applications is: don’t bother. “How can the Sheriff tell whether I am capable of responsibly exercising my Second Amendment rights, when he doesn’t even acknowledge that these rights exist?” Attorney Alan Gura, representing the plaintiffs in this case, said, “It’s a shame that these Sheriffs don’t think that self-defense is a ‘good cause’ to exercise the right to bear arms, but we’re confident the Second Amendment reflects a better policy.” Added co-counsel Donald Kilmer, “The California carry licensing system is being abused by some officials who are hostile to self-defense rights. The police can regulate the carrying of guns, and that includes preventing dangerous people from being armed. Complete deprivation of the right to bear arms, however, is not an option under our Constitution.” “The Supreme Court’s decision last year in the Heller case shows that there is both a right to keep arms and a right to bear arms,” said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb. “In most states, authorities do not deny a license to carry an operable firearm to any law-abiding applicant that completes training and a background check. This is also the practice throughout much of California. These two Sheriffs must respect the constitutional rights of their citizens to bear arms.” “California is often a leader in so many ways, but our state lags badly in streamlining its firearms laws,” said Gene Hoffman, Chairman of The Calguns Foundation. “We need 21st century gun laws that respect our Constitutional rights, and adopt modern, widely accepted practices that work well throughout the United States. Hopefully this action will serve as a wake-up call to our legislators, and to those officials who stubbornly resist accommodating Second Amendment rights. If they don’t reform, reform will come through litigation.” The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. The Calguns Foundation (www.calgunsfoundation.org) is a non-profit legal defense fund for California gun owners. The Calguns foundation works to educate government and the public and protect the rights of individuals to own and lawfully use firearms in California. 5. I think these mags are absolutely brilliant. . . someone must have spent hours designing them Notice how the side channels narrow towards the top so the tapered rounds stagger like a double stack dramatically reducing the gap between the 1st and 2nd round. Cool stuff!
  6. Do you have an online source handy for the taper reamer? I worked my bushing a bit with some sandpaper, and it helped a lot in my throw consistency. I'd like to get it better.
  7. Well, paid $70 more than zeros for the case, but my precious's are here. . . this should tide me over until I find another bullet or source.
  8. Yeah, I purchased a couple of sets from bulldog arms as well. I ended up not using most of them and cutting my own out because the blue painter's tape sticks better on compound curves than the vinyl templates did and I got tire of the edges peeling off before I got everything masked. Good templates though at a righteous price.
  9. Yeah, This was my 1st duracoat attempt. Sure does look good from far away details at step-by-step here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthr...lticam+duracoat Did you do the paint job yourself?
  10. my only rifle. . . makin' it work in California. . .
  11. DOH! I searched and read all kinds of postings and reviews before buying 2 of these 1/7/08. This is one week outside of the recall window. emailed CMC to see if I'm good to go. It'd be a pain to have to duracoat another set, so I hope the trigger part isn't the problem. . . if there is a problem with mine.
  12. I've been on back-order for months and months now for some Zero .45 ACP bullets. . . NOTHING takes this long to fix. I'm wondering if they have discontinued manufacturing of .45 ACP bullets altogether. What are the alternatives for reasonable quality jacketed 230 grain bullets? Is Montana Gold the only other show in town?
  13. Results just got in. . . I got 3rd place !!!! :surprise: So, I think if I had shot at all of the targets, I could have won. This is a far better result than I had anticipated. They should really put less running in the stages next time so the newbs don't have an advantage. If you have to run 50 yards from position to position, even a newb can fish a mag out of his pocket and hit the reload while running.
  14. Progress today. I decided to load the clays up to 4.3 grains and it did indeed hit a sweet spot at least where velocities are concerned. Standard deviations dropped to 8.42 and 9.94. Extreme spreads dropped to ~29 fps including the 1st cold shot. Velocity is now ~764 fps.
  15. Did some more testing today w/ 27.4 grains 748. 18" gun L 3005 H 3070 A 3038 ES 64.82 SD 22.56 16" gun L 2898 H 2945 A 2929 ES 47.25 SD 14.07 Group 18" gun Meopta K-dot. I'm not the best group shooter, but I if I put enough bullets down range, I'd be able to get some useable info. Now that I know power factor is not 160, I may be able to back down a bit and shoot more groups. Very much hoping to get a ~MOA load. Maybe I'll still get there with some tweaking. For now, I have 1.3" and 1.8" . . . functional. These are 1/8 and 1/7 twist rifles so maybe the 75 grain Hornadys I have inbound will fair better.
  16. You do not want to live in California. . . I promise My times were actually ok because there was a lot of running between positions. . . and it may be my 1st time out, but i can run just as fast as a GM It's that dang hitting things fast part that gets me every time. My programming was as soon as I'm done shooting a position, I run (as fast as I can) to the next position. . . it's the make sure you've shot all targets part that was amiss. So, in my head it goes target, target, target, target .. . and then my brain says, "DONE" and I run. . . and while I'm running and going for a mag change, I realize that my bolt should be locked back on an empty chamber. . . but it's not. . . cause I didn't shoot at everything I was 'sposed to. I'd get a decent time, "good job", but when I went to check targets, it went AA, AC, AA, AA, AC, . . . "did you shoot at this one?" . . . "did you shoot at this one either?" My brain is actually pretty much not running after the timer goes off 'cause I read in a blue book somewhere that I should focus on my little red dot . . . and I did, and it helped me get hits, but there's a programming malfunction. Maybe I need to instead of register "target, target, target, target, DONE ". . . register "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 DONE" That way, if it goes "1, 2, 3, 4,. . . " i know I'm not done yet because "run" comes directly after "done". Well, at least I did a little better than be safe and have fun. And that's about what the 1st match is about, eh? Hi Kevin C. will do! The wife's gun is with Benny Hill right now though (poor her). She'll be wanting to run it when it gets back. She really had fun at Babes with Bullets a long while ago and wanted a trigger like Lisa Munson has.
  17. I had a random Sunday off of work, so I decided to go shoot match. . . any match. It's about time. A quick search on the internet revealed a "tactical rifle" match that was going to run rain or shine. . . chances were leaning more towards rain So off I went. I had loads of fun, and thanks to all the pointers on this site, the rifle ran well despite the mud, and my not being able to sight in with my newly rolled ammo. In fact everything ran so well, it revealed that all of the major malfunctions are happening in my brain as I can't seem to program a good protocol to run a stage cleanly (shoot at all of the targets) There was low turnout due to the weather, so things were very mellow and everyone made me feel very comfortable. My wife would have really liked shooting this, and I think we'll have to go out together sometime and play rifles
  18. what can I say? When the wife says she wants to go learn rifles with you, but requests a pink, I thought it'd be a good idea to deliver. You'd be surprised how much some women like their pink rifles
  19. Well, I got aroud to some miscelaneous odds and ends over the holiday weekend. Some frustrating, some good. For some reason I thought I should upgrade the trigger guts of the house firearms. . . The wife's Springfield 9mm 1911 was frustrating. I purchased what should have been some good parts in hopes of having a decent drop-in trigger, but it was not the case. EGW hard sear, sear spring, disconnector, titanium hammer strut Koenig hammer New Brown firing pin (read here that sometimes there's issues w/ the stock titanium) New Caspian firing pin stop Mainspring is 19 lb. Wolf Appearantly, the EGW hard sear does not come with a secondary angle cut at all, and the hammer hooks on the Koenig hammer were very tall indeed. So, I had my serious doubts, but threw the parts in just for kicks. The trigger came out creepy and heavy. . . but safe. I guess I didn't completely mung it up. Wife not happy at all though. I have a choice of either further investing in tools and running the risk of ruining all of her trigger parts or calling in the pro's. So, I called a couple of folks recommended here Triangle Shooting, and Canyon Creek. Looks like I'll be in good hands with either one. Frustrated, I went to work on AFTEC extractor on my clunker Springfield, and that went in smoothly w/ some filing on the firing pin stop. A little more optimistic, I replaced the trigger on the wife's AR15. . . originally, it had a trigger job done on factory parts, and I read later here that that was not a good, permanent solution. I figured it'd last a little while since we don't REALLY shoot as much as we should. But when her rifle started doubling, I didn't want to mess around with safety and decided to get tool steel throughout for fire control group, and bought a Chip McCormick trigger. . . I had debated the JP trigger, and it came down to price. The McCormick ended up cheaper if you count in pins and tool steel hammer. While I was on Brownells, I also bought an ambidexterous safety for the funky California U-15 stock (found out after originally putting it together that ambi really is necessary w/ this grip setup). That went really well. What a treat after frustration with her 1911 trigger. This one just went in and works. I feel it will serve quite well. . . not that I can pawn it off now that it's pink. Strapworks had sent in some strapping I ordered a while ago, and I got on the sewing machine to make a custom pink strap mount for the funky U-15 stock as well. The Duracoat sure took a long time and slowed the process down and made a big stink in the house, but I think everything is good to go now on her rifle for a while. Good times.
  20. Well Sheeeoooooot.. . Are you serious? that means I've got all kinds of room to spare and still make 150 PF. I guess I reserve that batch of 400 I just loaded up at 27.4 grains for cold weather. It's been unseasonably cold in the Bay Area these last couple of weeks. Back to the drawing board I guess. I had only measured velocity, and having determined I have to push way way past max load, I figured I didn't have much room to wiggle, so accuracy would just have to be whatever it was as I loaded for the velocity I needed. Now that I can back it down, but I'll have to figure out how far.
  21. Good luck with the WW748, I've never had any luck with it, actually bad experiences so be careful if you're working near max loads. FYI, pressure rises with the temperature. If you work up your max loads on a cool day, you'll blow primers on a hot day. Agreed, max loads w/ ball powders can make for interesting times... Thats why that load is a good bit below 'max' (I've talked to guys running 27+gr w/ the same components). They were after velocity; I was after accuracy. 26.3-26.5gr W748 behind a 52gr SMK HPBT is an excellent hunnert-yard one-holer in most guns I've ran it thru. YMMV, of course. I've been playing with 748 and am not particularly experienced in any of this, but working up to 27.1 grains with the Hornady 55 was not going to make power factor in a 16" barrel - assuming I'm understanding the rules right and 160 is minor PF floor. I get 2899fps or 159.4 PF with 27.1 grains, so I sought to go higher based on working up slowly and experience from others here. I'm not a velocity nut. I just want to make ammo that meets the criteria in the games I want to play. 26.2 grains is the max published load as of right now. I understand that reloading particularly beyond published max loads is at your own risk, but W748 seemed common so I used it as a 1st load. Hope I don't blow anything up.
  22. Looks like I need 2910 to make 160 minor power factor. This means I've not loaded up far enough for the 16" rifle. Wife won't be happy if she's disqualified because I made bad ammo . Best avoid that situation altogether. Wife also won't be pleased if rifle blows up Looks like I'm headed towards 27.4 - 27.5 grains to go for 3100 and 3000 fps in order to comply with the rules of the game. . . and then, the accuracy will probably have to either be there or not because I don't have much wiggle room. Hopefully the combo proves in both rifles.
  23. Hello, rifle newb trying to work up a functional/semi-economical load to get me started. Not knowing too much about rifle loading in general, Here's what I'm using: LC pre-processed brass Hornady 55 grain FMJBT WW748 powder Winchester small rifle primers Dillon 550 Lee die set I'm loading for 2 guns (wife and mine) both chrome lined both 5.56 chamber. I was wondering if you guys might be able to let me know where an acceptably accurate load might generally lie with these components w/ my particular barrels. 18" and 16" Some data I've collected on a cool, drizzly day ~67 degrees sea level (16" rifle 1/7 twist): 25 gr. 2616 fps 25.5 gr. 2674 fps 26 gr. 2771 fps 26.2 gr. 2801 fps 27.1 gr. 2899 fps 18" rifle 1/8 twist 25 gr. 2685 fps 25.5 gr. 2785 fps 26 gr. 2899 fps 26.2 gr. 2925 fps 27.1 gr. 3010 fps I had powder gathering in my powder die. . . it didn't seem right to me so I took some sandpaper, twisted it up and sanded the inside of the powder die a bit to smooth it out. Now, I'm getting much more consistent powder throws. My OAL target is 2.235" but I noticed that the bullets themselves vary a lot in length, and my cartridges w/ the lee dies vary up to .01" sometimes. My extreme spreads average around 60 FPS. Is this normal? I don't have one of those comparator do-hickeys. 26.2 fps was the listed max load, so I approached it slowly and then went for ~27 grains (based on others here loading to 27.5) to see what the velocities would be and checked primers for danger signs. It was a cool day, and the velocities were not out of control, so I went ahead and tested. Primers seemed to all be ok. I was hoping for ~3100 ish but didn't get it. I don't even know what power factor I need to have for the game. Given these velocities, where's my range to focus on for a little bit of accuracy testing? What I'd really like to do is just make a bucket load of ammo and work on skills since I don't have any at 27 grains, the cases were getting pretty much filled all the way up w/ just a little bit of space left it seems. With these barrel twist rates, i'd assume my more accurate loads would be heavier bullets, but this is where I'm starting from and I'd like to see if I can get a functional load w/ the 55 grain and cheaper powder to build some skills before moving up to 75 or 77 grain bullets.
  24. Doh, Mis-type. . . I'm using Winchester small rifle primers. I'll re-adjust my previous post.
