Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Yeah, looked at the DAA kit. I could buy a brand new stocked IFAK, throw away the contents, and buy new cleaning gear, and still save 50%. I understand there are great options if price is not a factor. Looks like a great kit but trying to stay in the $20 range for just a case/bag, I already have the cleaning gear.
  2. Thanks for the quick replies. I am fairly new to USPSA so I am basically keeping my mouth shut but trying to learn, and I did from your replies.
  3. At a recent USPSA match we had a sort of questionable stage and I am not sure how scoring and the rules should have applied. Basically the stage was divided between a left and right lane of targets. In the right lane was a Classic Target behind a plastic barrel. From the starting area only the D zone was visible, but you could see the entire target if you proceeded down range in the shooting area. The barrel was not designated as a no-shoot and as the match progressed it was not taped. Some shooters, especially Open Shooters, began to 'game' the barrel by saving time by shooting the center of the barrel multiple times from the starting position hoping that some of their rounds would penetrate the barrel and hit the A-zone of the target behind the barrel. This allowed them to avoid the expenditure of time required to move downrange to where the A-zone was visible. As I said before, the precedent had already been established that the barrel was not taped. The RO could sometimes determine when the barrel was hit based on sound and possibly the barrel moving when it was hit, but this is pretty difficult when a shooter fires four or more rounds rapidly. 1. Should the RO have considered the barrel to be hard cover like any other stage prop? 2. Should the barrel have been taped? 3. Since 1 and 2 did were not applied, could the RO have called 'mikes' on any shots the RO estimated had hit the barrel, either based on the sound of a round hitting the barrel, barrel movement due to individual shots, or even determining based on trajectory a target hit had to have passed through the barrel, based on hit location and where the shots were taken from? Hindsight being 20/20, I would have added a no-shoot in front of the barrel, still leaving the D-zone visible from the starting area. Is this an appropriate adjustment, if done prior to the match?
  4. I am looking for an appropriate small bag for carrying and keeping organized my gun cleaning supplies that I need at a match. I am looking for something small, but bigger than something like one of those round Otis rifle cleaning kits. Basically I'd like room for a couple of bore and chamber brushes, a rod or two, maybe a few patches, a snake or two, a gun oil bottle like a CLP bottle, etc. I might even want room for a couple of small screw drivers or Allen wrenches. Ideally it would be something that would keep all these items orderly, and maybe even visible, so I can quickly grab what I need. I was thinking of something like an IFAK (Military Improved First Aid Kit) with all the individual elastic loops to keep everything organized but the IFAKs are a little too big. Anybody have any recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help.
  5. Excellent suggestions but really looking for the static ones since I would assume they are cheaper since they are simpler. Trying to save a few bucks and honestly, for practice, prefer the static mini-poppers. I am in the San Antonio area. Any ideas of companies that sell the static mini-poppers?
  6. A guy I used to shoot with had some steel poppers that were static and did not fall down. They were basically US mini poppers that fit into a slotted metal stand. They were great for practice because they did not fall down and didn't need resetting. Does anyone know a company that makes them? Thanks in advance!
  7. Thanks for all the quick replies. And no, no one is being too hard on me, I have learned a lot. We are going to shoot a carbine match here soon, so we will test out what we have. I think I will go in with the plan of giving the wife the T1 and the Burris XTR to choose between based on stage design, and I will stick with the ACOG, and then likely the Fastfire. Question though, can you shoot tactical and use a magnifier for your RDS?
  8. Have a question for three-gun optics. Someone else has a very similar topic but I did not want to bogart his topic, so I will start my own. Getting into three gun, something I have done exactly zero times so far. I have shot USPSA in production for the last year. I have accumulated some optics to try out on my AR. The AR is nothing special, basically I have two options, both pretty much stock except for some furniture changes; RRA Tactical Entry and an M&P 15T. The M&P is my wifes, the RRA is mine, and both of us intend to do three gun. I know there is stuff I can do to the ARs besides optics but my question centers on optics for now. I intend to shoot tactical, and I am a bit confused as under some rules tactical seems to be equivalent to limited, depending on what rules you are working under. Anyways, here are my optic choices, obviously with BUIS being present. Questions though, on a 1-4 optic, can you reliably cowitness BUIS when the optic is set at one power? Burris XTR 1-4/24 Millet DMSII 1-4/24 ACOG 3.5 Aimpoint T1 Primary Arms M4 clone Burris Fastfire (the only mount I have is a ring mount that goes with the Burris) I am thinking of letting the wife have the Burris for her gun, and running the ACOG on my rifle, at least for stages/matches with some tgts out to 100 meters and beyond. Question, can you switch optics between stages w/o changing divisions? If we are just shooting local matches with stages basically in pistol bays, the wife can use the T1 and I can use either the PA clone or the Fastfire (I'd need to buy a new mount for it and I am not sure the Fastfire is the best option as a primary RDS, seems to be more of a backup for a rifle). I am actually considering getting rid of the Millet as it is NIB after a warranty exchange and I have since picked up the Burris XTR. Also, considering sending the PA clone back as it is also NIB, and a recent purchase, and I made the unplanned purchase of the T1 after buying the PA. I haven't brought the PA to the range yet, but just playing around with it in the house, I do not seem to be able to acquire the red dot w/o cheek weld as easily as I can with a genuine Aimpoint. I may be wrong, and that is just playing with the PA in the house mounted on the rifle. So what are recommendations and considerations given this lineup? Specific Questions: 1. Are limited and tactical the same divisions under some rules? 2. Can you switch optics between stages w/o changing divisions? 3. Can you reliably cowitness BUIS with a variable optic when it is set to 1x? 4. Is the Burris Fastfire a decent rifle Primary RDS such that I should buy a stand alone mount for it? 5. Given the assortment of optics that I currently have, is the PA and Millet optics sort of redundant meaning, do I already have something that does the same job better? With selling the Millet and sending the PA sight back, I could have roughly $300 to do stuff like buy a stand alone mount for the Fastfire or purchase something else that is more suited to the options I have. Now, to make things murkier, I also just picked up a SCAR 16. I don't think that really changes anything as it's close enough to an AR that it shouldn't really change my optics considerations but maybe I am missing something?
