  1. Ever tried the 147s over WSF? I ask as I have a pound of WSF I'd like to shoot up, and exploring its use with 140grn boolits. 1.08OAL for the 115 and 147s, in addition to the 124s? That's for the clarification! Joe, different weights is a preference thing. Personally though, I'd recommend starting with 115grn JRNs.
  2. Thanks all! mda, I'm ok with +P to an extent, but not too +P, at least not for every day plinking, and certainly not into Major territory. FN Hi Power Alloy with buffer and 18.5lb spring -- not something I would like to shot +P+ in, at least not to too great an extent. The Lee#2 manual has 147 Jacked AA#7 load at ~1050fps. I just got in a chrono so I'll start trying loads with 140gr lead shortly. I'll likely tone it down for accuracy sake and to save wear and tear on the gun, and am pickup a mold 125/130grn HP for greater fps loads. I load rounds that I may not shoot until over a year later, so temperature sensitive powders are less attractive for me than if I was competing.
  3. Hey Pat, You using Silhouette by any chance? I noticed in my 115gr 9x19mm load, Silhouette would give a tight group but with a few outliers, and I've heard another fellow experience the same issue. Did you change your load from 2 years ago? I noticed those groups didn't have a flier.
  4. Is AA#2 or AA#7 temperature sensitive, and if so, normal or reverse? I can't seem to find info concerning this. (I may just keep my own chrono records and compare come summer).
  5. Could you share an OAL? I just recently started casting Miha's 140grn boolit.
  6. Might you have fps numbers noted that you could share? Thanks
  7. I thought I had seen N320 mentioned around. It looks like great option for a minor/slower load. Apparently it has a too fast burn-rate for a 1100fps load though.
  8. I enjoyed Silhouette when I was still shooting 115grn JRN. I got a quite accurate load out if it. I noticed some variableness though, and after reading more here, apparently it is reverse-temperature sensitive. Another power I was looking at for pushing 140grn cast boolits, WSF, apparently is reverse temperature sensitive as well. A powder I was looking at trying for non-warm loads, Solo 1k, is apparently reverse temperature sensitive. Is there any powder for 9x19 that's not particularly temperature dependent? I'm interested primarily in powders more applicable for warmer loads, but powders suitable for only minor loads are welcome as well. AA7? One of the VV powders? Thanks! Ultimately I'm looking for is a powder that will propel 140grn boolit to 1100fps, at below +P pressures, in a load that can hit a penny at 10yrds, with low flash and temperature resilient. Somehow I doubt I'll be able to check all those boxes, but I'm willing to be surprised.
  9. gtldvm, attached is a pic of what Sin-ste is referring to. Excessive stabilization is undesired as well, and can reduce muzzle velocity. Additional reading here.
  10. TimG_SC, do you mean like this? It's pretty common for us boolit guys to get this look as we use larger diameter projectiles (1 or 2 thou over groove diameter). It is indeed possible, though, to get this affect simply due to seating too deeply, particularly with working with heavy for calibre bullets. The 9mm case starts to taper internally after a certain point, and the designers never had 147gr projectiles in mind. Here's some elaboration I binged for you: http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/ammo-can/157652-inside-9mm-case.html
  11. 115gr JRN Precision Delta 5.9gr Silhouette 1.148 OAL Work up at your own risk. It's a tack driver when I do my part. Based on D. Manley's info, so thanks and credit to him. Eight rounds, 15yrds:
  12. This link may be helpful: http://www.reloadingroom.com/index_files/Measure%20Pressure.htm That's an intriguing powder. I only have Silhouette on my nearer term to-try list. That sir is an outstandingly helpful, detailed post. Thanks for sharing.
  13. I have a Uniflow so I was curious if anyone ever had, or had seen the need, to fit something like this on their Dillon. Cool deal. Your mention of owning 3 Star machines just threw me off. Thanks, Dan
  14. Thanks for the input. I was under the impression there were some powders that the Dillon didn't like but others would feed well. Guess this was a false impression. George Tucker, does Dillon own Magma? I actually have the Magma Star Lube-sizer on my to-buy list.
  15. Title says it all. I'm just curious as I've heard there are certain powder types the Dillon powder measure design does not function well with. Thanks, Dan
  16. Another LNL AP vs 650 question: Do both accommodate the installation of different powder measures just a readily as the other? For example, can a 650's powder measure be readily swapped out with a Redding or Uniflow?
  17. CocoBolo, I plan on using a light and a Mark1 Human Eyeball as a powder check. I thought I saw something somewhere about the Hornady being more accommodating to this approach due to greater spacing between the dies. You thoughts? Also, I assume you're running Hornady dies in your LNL AP? If so, how you liking your Hornady dies compared to your Dillon dies? I'm specifically interested in your thoughts on the seater. I'm not having great success with my Lee 9x19mm seater (getting a bit lopsided bullet seating unless I'm really careful), but I don't want to shell out the green for a Redding Competition seater if I don't have to.
  18. Hum, interesting. I may try that if I end up going that route. Thanks for all the input. Dan
  19. Thanks for all the input guys! It looks like in an apples-to-apples comparison the conversion costs are close, but if you want to scrimp temporarily the LNL AP accommodates more so. One thing rather funny -- the 'Dillon blue' hurts my eyes, so if I do go the Dillon route I'll probably be painting it. Believe it or not, I'd actually lean towards red as I like my Lee Classic Cast's aesthetic. I hope that wouldn't cause Dillon to void the warranty though.
  20. Same boat with the LNL AP though, not an aspect of distinction, right? Thanks for the response Brian. Waldog, not trying to tell you what to do, but try to first take a couple of deep breaths before posting, OK?
  21. Couldn't this sort of 'bare minimum' route be done with a Dillon too? To what extent though? I imagine the same Toolhead could be used, but would everything else have to be purchased anyway? Kind of like buying a sunday but asking for no cherries to save money, but I'd like to know just the same. I just wanted to avoid such 'commonalities' for the sake of the list. True though, lots of cartridges use that shellplate. 30/06, .260Rem, 7mm-08, 35 Whelen are just a few off the top of my head that do. What then? Thanks for all the input
  22. This is a great thread. I'm in the market for a progressive as well, and I've come to the same conclusion as some of the posters here to skip the 550 and go 650, if going the Dillon route. Is the 650 really that painful to use without a case feeder? I'd like to save the case feeder for later, and maybe actually make my own for a fraction of the cost.
  23. I'm looking for some of the objective information as I decide between the LNL AP and the Dillon 550B and 650. What are the caliber conversion costs (no commonalities, like .243/.308) for the LNL AP, not including dies? From this site. (Brian and crew, you guys do a great job in making info easy to find here): Dillon 550B: Caliber Conversion Kit, Toolhead & Powder Die: $43.95 + $31.45 ($10.50 for only the powder die) Dillon 650: Caliber Conversion Kit, Toolhead & Powder Die: $75.95 + $35.45 ($10.50 for only the powder die) So what's the total costs for caliber conversion with the LNL AP, sans dies? What all is even needed? 5 bushings: Midway, Package of 10 /2 = $38.49/2 Shellplate: Midway, $28.99 ...what else? Edit: Additional Options: Powder-thru Expander Die (not the route I'm going personally) Quick Change Powder Die: $22.99 Powder Insert: $9.89 Thanks, Dan
