Finally read the FAQs

Finally read the FAQs (3/11)

  1. Yes, I am. I should be at Marysville.
  2. Not sure on the reamer. JPL built it. The Bedell comes with 3 top ports and 4 side ports. JPL cuts it back to two side ports.
  3. I'm running Bedell on both of mine with the two of the front side ports machined off. Very flat shooting with 135gr and 8.5gr of Silhouette.
  4. I decided as the off season was approaching to do some load testing. I realize the felt recoil is a personal preference so I am just stating my preferences here for the benefit of discussion. I'm running a custom JPL 40 with a Bedell comp cut down to 5 ports. In my other Open 40 I was running 8.5gr of Longshot with the 135gr Rainier/Nosler at 1.155 OAL. In my back up gun it was running about 177pf and that is the minimum load for Longshot. I shot that for a number of years and it was pretty good out of that gun (Tony Kidd built, custom Tony Kidd comp, Schuemann barrel). The same load is running 183pf with the JPL gun and a KKM barrel. When I started shooting open in 2004 I started with a shorty 9 major and hated it. I switched to a 40 Open in 2011 and tried numerous powders and bullet weights before I settled on Longshot. With the higher power factor and more modern powders, I decided to give it a go again. I'm using a baseline of 174pf for all powders and all are loaded to 1.155 OAL. I'm trying the following powders: Hodgdon HS-6 Winchester Auto Comp Ramshot Silhouette Winchester 572 I'm not trying any Viht powders, as I tried several years ago and they are ridiculously expensive. So far, I have shot HS-6, Auto Comp and Silhouette side by side with Longshot. I preferred Auto Comp and Silhouette over Longshot but Longshot over HS-6. I'll be testing the 572 later this week and shooting Auto Comp, Silhouette and 572 side by side.
  5. Thanks guys. Tried HS-6 this week and thought it was too much recoil compared to my Longshot load. Trying Autocomp this coming week.
  6. When you were loading WAC with 135gr, how much powder where you using?
  7. Thanks. I'm going to try out some different loads over the winter. I'll definitely give that a try.
  8. That is what I am usually at with the 8.55 Longshot. I was surprised that I was over 180 yesterday.
  9. What PF are you hitting?
  10. Shot Inland Empire yesterday. Load was 8.55 Longshot at 1.155 OAL with a 135gr Nosler. Ended up at 181PF. I've been in the high 170s before. Going to drop it down to 8.45gr. For the guys using Auto Comp or HS6, is anyone using a 135gr bullet? If so, what is your load?
  11. I've had the same luck. I can get 26 but can't get it in the gun. I have been running it 25 + 1. Hate the base pad setup on it. I wants to drag the spring every time you take the bottom off. It has worked pretty well so far though. I might try some different followers also. The original looks like it was whittled out with a pocket knife. Lol.
  12. Your short sticks don't need to fit in the gauge for open so I'm not sure why that would matter. I recommend you call Beven directly and he can tell you exactly what to get based on what you want. He is a super neat guy.
  13. I use nothing but Grams basepads. I get 20 in my short sticks and 25 in my big sticks. Beven can get one more in each but he has mutant thumbs. I'm trying out a MBX big stick. It can load 26 but there is nothing left on the spring so I only load 25.
  14. What's the dot size on that?
