  1. AMEN, would they rather have sticky wax lube and raw lead dust being absorbed by the bloodstream?
  2. Thought I'd update this thread with what I'd learned so far. First to settle any question in my mind that there was some issue with the gun like headspace or cycle timing I bought a box of Bullalo Bore's Heavy 10mm 180 JHP's. There were no issues at all firing this ammo rated to run about 1350 fps in a 5" barrel. Wanted to chrono my Tanfo but it was raining that day, saved some rounds to clock in the near future.. Loaded 30 rounds with the same P-D 180's and 13.4g of A#9 but this time using CCI 330 LPP, no issues were observed with the primers backing out. Loaded 30 the same way using Winchester LPP with the same result, no backing out there either. Going back to the Federal 155's but backing the load down to 12.7 of A#9 the primers all remained in place except for one I noticed to be about .010 proud. This situation still has me scratching my head a little. Been loading using Federal primers almost exclusively for many years now and never noticed any issues like this before. But in the end the solution is easily at hand since the Tanfo has a beautiful trigger at 3.5 lbs stock so never played with lighter springs here. When I can I'll chrono those BB's and a few more of my builds and post the results here for peoples info.
  3. In 10mm 180g FMJ I've used Precision Delta and Zero, both highly accurate but the P-Ds are priced a bit better. Tanfo Witness Match 10mm Loaded to 1.250 OAL, various powders etc. For economy in .40 cal I use Missouri Bullets IDP #5-GL These are 180g coated bullets that are now cast without the lube grove. Just started using the new coated bullets, love not having to deal with the mess associated with lube, both during loading and when shooting. Extremely accurate in both my Tanfoglio Witness Match and Beretta Brigadier 40 OAL 1.125, various powers, etc.
  4. Thanks for the input guys. GrumpOne, I haven't taken any pictures but yea they were all proud with 3 or 4 out of thirty completely blown out. I'll have to run some experiments on the various suggestions here. My brass is from various sources that I haven't kept separated, none of it has been loaded excessively? Maybe I'll buy a batch of new brass, Top Brass has some good prices and see what happens with it and Federal primers and some others. I have both CCI and Winchester on the shelf to try but most of my range weapons are tuned for Federal. Very strange to me that this should occur all of a sudden with this new (to me) load. I wouldn't consider it hot? Thanks again, when I learn something solid I'll report back.
  5. Tanfoglio Witness Match purchased as a 40 S&W. I bought a 10mm barrel from EAA, a 20LB spring from Wolff. Originally barrel wouldn't go into battery, hood was too long.. Mounted barrel in my surface grinder and removed about .010 from the hood,. Seems to lock-up correctly now. Been shooting the gun for a number of years with fairly light to midrange loads with no noticed issues. Decided to build something a little warmer, but not crazy, and loaded up some of these, Various brass but I don't consider it old or shot loose Precision Delta 180g FMJ AA #9 powder 13.4g (Lyman says max at 13.9) Federal 155 LPM primers OAL 1.250 Chrono Beta Master at 15 feet, L 1210, H 1256, A1236 Shot about 30 rounds or so down range, report was brisk but didn't seem too unusual. Chrono numbers seem about as expected maybe just slightly faster. Gun was jamming quite a bit so I stopped to look at things and pick up my brass. They all showed the primers protruding at least ..010 or more, 3 or 4 were missing their primers completely! Went back to my prior lighter loading of 6.0g of Universal, with all else the same. They chrono'd at L 1063, H 1091, A 1081 No issues with primers with this load. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be the issue here? Any help would be appreciated. TIA
  6. Remember it's his pride, besides a few possessions it's all us dinosaurs have left at our age. He's your father and still wants to be able give his children something even at his advanced age and meager finances. Find some way to still let him hold on to his dignity in the transactions over the press and guns. If need be take the stuff free of charge like he wants and then pay his bills or contribute some other way to his financial well being. Things will come up over time where you'll be able to give back and make things easier for him financially. Holidays, birthdays, fathers-day, etc; are great times to take advantage of his needs without insulting his pride. There are things much more important to a man than the size of his bank account no matter how small it may be.
  7. If the plate bolt is not staying set you just need to tighten the setscreew a bit more. I use the longer end of the allan but don't go crazy, just good and snug. Never had a problem with my Dillion in 35 years. Grumpone, If your setscrew doesn't have a brass insert either if fell out or someone replaced it. Get a new one from Dillion before you damage the threads on your plate bolt.
  8. 1.08OAL for the 115 and 147s, in addition to the 124s? That's for the clarification! Precision Delta only makes JHP's in 124g. Sal Where'd you get that information? PD 124 FMJ You may want to check their website again, they make 124 gr FMJs. Yes I know. You guys need to re-read the original question. My point was that PD doesn't make JHPs in 115 or 147s. Sal

  10. LOL, You ask 100 people and you'll get about 97 different answers. There's a ton of good info here but you got to start somewhere so work with what you got. Break out that classic Unique powder and the 124g FMJ's you get in the PD sampler. Load them over about 4.6g of Unique to a OAL of about 1.140. This will be a fairly light load with plenty of room to work up, max would be 5.0+g. For the 115 FMJ bump load up to 4.8g and for 147 FMJ go down to 3.9g. If you get the JHP use an OAL of 1.080 The first with the PD 124 FMJ's is actually one of my pet loads and shoots very well in my Ruger SR9c, Beretta 92, and Taurus P11, should give you a happy start in your XDM. 11. Yes the Lee dies will work on a Dillon 550B press, it uses any standard 1" die. But not on the Square Deal, it's uses proprietary 7/8's dies. No you can't use the Lee powder die with a Dillon measure but Dillon 550 caliber conversion kits come with their own powder die/expander, so there will be nothing more to buy. The Square Deal press is a good press but the 550B is much heavier duty. Since you already have 3 die sets you want to use the 550B will be the better choice and cost will about even out. Sal
  12. I standardized all my loads on magnum primers during the shortage and have stayed there ever since but I use midrange burning pistol powder, mainly Universal. One comment I would like to make is be VERY careful doing this with a fairly fast powder like Titegroup. I'd be scared to go much above the 4.4g load your now using. Pressures could spike real fast to a dangerous level it you start to push that charge. Sal
  13. Get a RCBS Lock-Out die and use it for any loading that a double charge wouldn't have powder running over the top of the case. Great product that could have saved a lot of KaBoom'd guns. Sal
  14. Aren't Precision Delta bullets jacketed? Yes, Precision Delta bullets aren't plated, they are genuine jacketed. And they're all I use, normally in 124g. Why buy plated when you can get real jacketed for less money? Sal
  15. Why the magnum primers? Have you chrono'd? I'd guess that load gets close to 1200fps. During the ammo/component shortage of 2008-9 magnum primers were all I could find, so I adjusted my pet loads down a taste and started running tests using them. Never showed any issues of high pressures but did notice the powder burned cleaner with almost no soot or leftover flakes. Accuracy also seemed a bit better across the board, I think due to more consistent ignition. But I can't prove that because I don't have a chrono, when I lived up in Illinois I never had any place I could set one up. Just retired and moved to FL and will be getting one in the very near future.. I would guess the velocity to be closer to 1100 fps per Hodgdons data. Lastly, I now only have to stock two primers (Federal L&S pistol magnums) and can buy in bulk to save money. Sal PS, I DO NOT recommend this mag primer approach to guys that use any powder much faster than Universal/Unique. Results using spikey fast powders like Bullseye, Clays, Titegroup, etc; could have dangerous results.
