  1. When you change recoil spring weights, I think you have to change main springs also?? I'm not sure what the purpose for this is though. I'm sure someone else knows?

I am no 1911 expert, but I run a 14# recoil spring with the same load of TG and 230gr RN as the OP. The mainspring I run came with a trigger kit and seems to work fine anywhere from light loads all the way up to full power loads using an 18# recoil spring.

I guess if you are tuning a race gun it might be beneficial to balance the mainspring weight to the other trick parts to avoid robbing slide speed. With a .45 you should be fine with the stock mainspring. Lightening the MS too much can and will cause light primer strikes.

  2. I would say try one and see if you like it. If for some reason you are not satisfied with your purchase Vortex will do whatever is necessary to make your experience with us a good one.

    Scott

It's hard to argue with that.

Graham, I can back Scott up with experience. I don't know him or work for him either. Just a very satisfied customer of Vortex after a 1 1/2 week turnaround on an RMA. They even sent me parts that I forgot to send in with the RMA.

    It's a good dot too!

  3. Stage 1 was the only stage I left undefeated targets except for the infamous stage 3. Freaking fast drop turners with hard cover to boot!!!

As much as that hard cover got shot, the two no shoots between the turners got away with only the right one hit once. Stefan said that means he should have just put the turners a lot closer together. :goof: I'm glad he didn't.

    Edited for hit count...

  4. Even though I've read on here time and again how nice and helpful everyone one is that play these games, I was still pleasantly surprised.

Not only was David and everyone that helped him put on the match willing to answer any of my questions and put up with me learning the ropes.

Almost every shooter and all the guys wearing team or sponsor jerseys that came through stage one thanked ME. It was a privilege to be able to work it. Now I know what skills I need to work on, and what habits I should work on dropping.

  5. I did time out on the long stage last year! Got all my hits though. I think the OP has the right idea, be safe, relax and have fun. Shooting rifle was very new to me last year, and I haven't gained a whole lot of experience since. Best advice I could give would be to ask questions of the more experienced shooters in your squad(always after they have shot a stage, not right before). Find out why they are doing what they're doing through the course of the stage and it will give you good insight as to certain techniques they are using and more importantly why.

Good thing I checked zero. It wasn't.

I hate when I fail at personal goals. So as not to disappoint old #1, after practicing on some long plate shots today I think I'll lower my goals to just being safe and having fun this year. If I time out, I time out.

I'll work on some skills in prep for next year's match.

  6. It's about the hits, get those safely and you will have a good match. Rather than think no DQ-think shoot safely and at my speed. Keep the muzzle down and down range. Be careful getting into and out of positions-think of getting your gun in and out of positions and you will avoid hazards. practice putting the safety on and off and clearing the gun. Have some fun.

I would be the first one to catch my muzzle on a barrier going to prone. I'll remember to position it, and then me.

Take a couple of deep breaths before moving into position for the long shots: it helps. Know your zero. And squuueezzee the trigger for those longer shots.

See ya there...it's a great match.

    Curtis

Thanks! Controlling breathing hadn't occurred to me, I'm usually not running around right before I shoot though.:cheers:

Perfect warning for a bonehead mistake. I can imagine missing 6-7 times before I realized it too.

I'm planning on verifying zero today and practicing on the longer ones a couple times if I can.

I'll be wearing a red AL hat and glasses. What squad are you in?

  7. Friday May 28th I am shooting the Steel City Carbine Championship in Hoover, AL and working the match Saturday and Sunday. This will be the first time I've shot a match using my AR. Luckily I will be shooting with a squad full of experienced folks in a more laid back environment than the main match.

I have been running over what I want to accomplish, and more importantly what I need to avoid. The shooting is the least of my worries. I don't claim to be Bob Lee Swagger, but I do know my rifle. Since I am new to this I'd like to get some tips if anyone will oblige.

These are my goals for the match:

    1. Finish without DQ.

    2. Complete all stages within the 3 min limit.

    3. Avoid injury to myself and others.

    4. Have fun.

The idea is to keep them simple and attainable. By keeping to these four goals hopefully I can avoid the urge to try and keep up with the guys I'll be shooting with. The last thing I want to do is rush a stage and wonder when I'm done if I made any hits. Brad_G has given me a bunch of things to think about when waiting to shoot and on stage previews. I can see where he's coming from too. Still too much to have cluttering my head for this match.

Like I said above, I'd like some basic, general tips. Advanced ideas are fine, but I'm looking to avoid any bonehead moments with obvious things that a new run n gun shooter might overlook or just not realize.

    Thanks.

  8. Anyone use the AR-15 buffer tube mounting plates with QD sockets in them? Trying to figure out what rear mount to use for a V-tac sling. There seem to be a couple different designs all priced the same. Some replace the plate while I know at least one goes over it and clamps down. Are there any advantages other than possible weight savings to either design?

For the front mount I am using the QD socket built into the rail section on my forearm.

  9. I am assuming that I had a double charge. Loading .38 HBWC with 2.9 grn W231. There was one round that sounded much louder than all the others and the recoil matched the sound. I had made it half way through my rounds and decided to leave before it happened again. Even though this wasn't a potential KB for my 686 I still pulled and weighed the rest of the rounds. All 2.9 grns.

  10. i have checked them no mention of goldmontana company said to compare to golddot speer what do you think

Montana Gold JHP bullets are different in a number of ways from Speer's Gold Dot. Most notably construction, total bearing surface and jacket hardness. Unless you are quite experienced at handloading I wouldn't try to use Gold Dot reload data. If you are quite experienced in handloading you'd have manuals.(hint)

I personally use load data for the Hornady xtp when loading a M.G. JHP for the first time and I always start with the lowest load first.

I also use factory loaded store bought rounds in my CCW and home defense pistols.

  11. Quite uneventful and probably obvious to most reading this. I'll definitely not do this again.

Right after seating the primer in a .38 case I realized it was split and was useless. In my ignorance I assumed the easiest way to make this safe to throw away is to toss it in the old 686 and pop it. It took me 45 minutes to figure out why my Revo was now locked so tight nothing moved and another 20 to fix it. A drop of break free would have been much quicker.

  12. A couple weeks ago a buddy called and asked me to meet him at the range to show him how to operate his new pistol. He is a bouncer and under the direction of his boss had gotten the pistol to carry on the job.

I asked what he bought and he said the guy at the store told him it was a Glock with a safety and he would need that if he was going to carry it. When we got to the range he pulled out a Ruger box holding a new SR9c.
