Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I've only been shooting handguns ten years. My first gun was a SIG GSR which I wore out. I used 230 grain FMJ for my self defense ammo. People laughed at me with their hundred dollar Gold Dot HP's and such. The FMJ 45, or 45 ball ammo has been a proven manstopper forever. Why not use ball 230 grain? This is my argument and question. (Aside from overpenetration issues.) Which I think are over rated. You expect to hit the adversary with one perfect shot in any caliber? overpenetration is a legal issue, and a bickering match in my opinion. Six 230 grain bullets flying through the air, ball or HP, are just as deadly. I understand the legal standpoints for law enforcement and federal agancies. For law enforcement having to use HP's for legal reasons, but the military uses ball handgun ammo do they not, in their 45's and 9mm's. I guarantee a double tap with 230 grain ball will put a person down faster and harder than any 165 grain +P+. So...Why not use ball. Will it not perform against a foe just as well as a 230 grain Ranger?
  2. At the store the other day they had a NIB TRP stainless steel for $1450. They wouldn't come down in price. I wanted to trade my plastic HK pistol for another 1911. I owned a SIG GSR. That was my first handgun. My first 1911. I don't know about the TRP, so I didn't invest in it. It felt very good. The front LPI is awesome. How does the TRP compare to the operator? For competition and self defense.
  3. I'll look at Borders for it. If they don't have it, they could order it. Your telling me. Man, some guys and gals are like lightning! Bam bam bam, drop mag, Bam. But I don't enter to win. I enter to improve and learn. Also to see old friends, and to show off new toys.
  4. I looked at this gun...Springfield MC Operator. Is it reliable? It has an ambidextrous safety. Down the road would it be possible to get a standard single safety on the support hand side ( Traditional Location )? Or is any 1911 with an ambi safety specially built, so a single sided safety can't be easily dropped in.? Thanks
  5. Yes, I'm going to get the book. By the way. I shoot IDPA with the 1911, which I sold. All I have now is a HK P30 9mm, I purchased in a rush, because they didn't have any P226's in. I don't really care for polymer guns. I like the feel of steel. I can't shoot it as well as my 1911. Still I shoot it every week, it's my only self defense gun for now.
  6. I would personally like to thank Ghost Dog, Story teller, and every other response. I have "all" posts copied onto a word file for quick reference. You have "all" been very helpful. Also very professional. Question. Does Enos's book cover these fundamentals?
  7. What I meant by moving my grip, is that with a one hand hold, it's impossible to add the supporting hand w/o overlapping into a thumb over thumb grip. To get a thumbs forward grip, I have to loosen the one handed grip, point my thumb up, place in my supporting hand, then enclose it with my strong hand, resting my strong hand thumb on top of my supporting hand. This is my new grip, w/wrist bent at target. I ordered grip glue. My hand still wants to come loose on me after 4 shots, unless I adjust quickly. I feel my grip is too far foward. Has anyone tried interlocking pinkies, like on a golf club?
  8. I have a HK P30 9mm. No oil I use stays on the plastic for more than 30 rounds. Is this product good with HK's? I guess you could classify them in the Glock category or XD, as having a polymer lower. What viscosity should I use? I shoot 200 rounds a week. It's my daily CC gun.
  9. When I twist/turn/torque my left supporting hand, so that my thumb points straight down the gun @ the target, it puts my left arm higher than my right arm. Much higher. It also hurts my wrist. Though it does help out with control issues. The muzzle comes down straighter. I might try increasing my grip size. I have the smallest on the gun now. My thinking is more right hand grasp. Though it leaves less grip for the left hand to make contact. When gripping with the left hand, I peel the right hand off, exposing more grip, and then tuck the left hand in. Then settle the thumb on my shooting hand on top. Is this correct?
  10. You wanted to see "MY" grip so here it is. My elbows are both bent, and my right arm is higher than my left. Thanks for the gloves tip. I don't want a crutch. I want to work the problem. Thanks for the Grip Glue tip, Can't find any. I'll have to order some, but it won't get here for a while. Sometiomes, I see Massad, or other shooters with their arms locked stiff in rapid fire. I do this and my support hand jumps off the gun. I feel like I want to nail my left hand into the grip.
  11. I use this exact grip. Only the heel of my support hand makes contact with the grip of the gun. Strength is not an issue for me...it is my technique. I will try arm angle, right now I lock up my elbows. I'll loosen up, so my arms absorb a little more recoil. I used to put a little thumb pressure against the gun, but now I rest them only. They feel out the proper position. I haven't heard about that grip glue stuff, I'll look into it, and I'll shoot w/ a pair of leather gloves, and see what difference that makes. Thanks.
  12. I shoot thumbs forward. Always have. My problem is with my supporting hand. I am a right handed shooter. My left, support hand comes loose, and messes up my hold every three to four shots, no matter how hard I grip the gun. It's driving me nuts.
