Thanks for the helpful replies. The magazines fit the grips with a tiny bit of wiggle room at the bottom. They are the correct caliber and feed just fine, the only issue is the trigger reseting. Using a micrometer, the only appreciable difference, other than overall length, is the size of the magazine catch notch. It is bigger on the red basepad mags, and the follower seems to sit a bit lower in the 3 red mags when empty. Marked the magazines and inserted them and fired the gun several times, did not see any areas where the trigger bow is rubbing. When you manually reset the trigger, it doesnt feel like it is dragging, it takes a firm tug and then snaps, almost like it was caught on something. Ordered new mags for it, but it is also going back to the smith who assembled it because he is curious too.

I recieved this pistol as a gift. It was made on a CK Arms frame with a custom serial # to commorate a lost loved one. The person who gave it to me included one STI mag which functions flawlessly with the gun. The 3 mags with red basepads I purchased from someone else. When using any of the 3 mags with red base plates, the trigger will not reset on live fire. Dry firing it will work fine, but if live fired, no reset. If the gun is fired, reloaded from the magazine and then the magazine is removed and the round in the chamber is fired, still, no reset. Kind of at our wits end and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or knows a good Smith to address this with in the San Antonio area?

My son used a Safariland Cup Challenge 002 with a 617 for about a year shooting steel before he moved to a 627 out of the same holster. He had optics on both revolvers and it worked great. I have used my 002 for about 15 years with L and N frame guns and had no problems.

I bought this revolver, set up just like this back in the early 90's from a friend who was leaving the sport. It is a 7 shot, machined for moon clips. I used it for steel shoots for several years until I switched to a 627. It has sat, un-used in the safe for at least 5 years. I took it out the other day and just can't believe how heavy it feels. The action is really smooth and it is the only revolver I have that my 13 year old daughter can smoothly fire double action, but again, she can only hold it steady for a few shots. Just about every thread on line asking about re-barreling a revolver ends with advice amounting to sell it and buy the one you want, it will be cheaper. However, as much as I like this gun, I dont see it as being "marketable". So the advice I am looking for is how to drop weight from this beast? New barrel? Have 3" lopped of this one and have it recrowned? It would be nice to have my daughter start shooting it regularly with her brother and I so any advice appreciated. Also, any one have a good revolver smith in the San Antonio area? Thanks for your time. Chris

When I was waiting to ship out from the MEPS station, they overhead paged a guy with the last name of "Parts", going to Ft Leonard Wood. Poor guy had to spend the next couple years saying Private Parts reporting for duty. Also, was driving down I-35 the other evening and a Crane drove by with "Moore Erection" written on the side of the boom. Seriously?? My 5 year old daughter was just diagnosed last year so while I can't exactly sympathize, I do kinda know what you are going through. Endo doesn't want to start her on a pump yet so she gives herself 4 shots a day. Even with mom and dad being nurses we had a steep learning curve (and I work in diabetes research!). Gillster

I always have a cylinder load worth of jacketed "clean-out" rounds on hand to fire after shooting lead.

I had a 686 sent in for repair, they picked it up at the house on a wednesday and it was back in perfect order the very next tuesday along with a detailed note of what they did. What was funny was I got a letter the next day detailing what they were planning on doing to fix the revolver. Didn't ask for it quickly or anything, just was.

The scope mount works on K/L/N frame alike since it uses the same hole and recess as the rear adjustable site. Here is the Brownells page for it: B-Square Scope Mount I used the same mount on a 625 before parking it on a 686-3 for good. Hope that helps. Chris

B-Square makes one that works pretty well. Brownells might sell them, if not B-Square has a web page. I have had one on an older 686 for years. Chris

Coincidence on a few, luck on a few others. I work nights so I watch alot of movies on my off time, since the family is asleep and I usually can't sleep at night, so I spend a lot of time at Blockbuster . The slide stop on my son's P9 open gun broke in 2 the other evening, shooting minor loads for steel shooting, and I was wondering about the best place to get a new one or an alternative. In a search, I saw some folks using hardened pins as replacements. Any advice on how/where to get a couple? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris
