  5. [ link to LARGER image ] I weighed my pack before leaving and it was about 95 lbs without my camera or cleaning stuff. Guns added about 20 lbs.
  6. How do you know it's "two"? If the side-swing lever were permanently attached to the Aimpoint itself, would it theb be one? How about if I put a carboard box over both, with two open ends to look through? An aluminum box? An aluminum box mechanically tethered to both the Aimpoint and magnifier?
  7. I use these cheap ones: http://www.aosafety.com/aosafety.com/shoot...ucts/pas_05.htm
  8. I wear NRR 32/33 plugs AND low-pro muffs.
  9. I've had two done by Ted Yost. Work is excellent. Be prepared to wait.
  10. The dimples are most likely from a few loose shot pellets that were streaming down the bore as the next shot was fired. I

  12. Yes, essentially like that, but with a more robust front sight and no mag well. eerw, I recommend the class. It was a pistol tactics/defense class, not a shooting class, so it was not a waste of time. -z
  13. Hi guys. It is easy to screw up a Ti frame, either by embedding lapping material in the slide rails or by improperly filing/machining/cutting the material itself (which acts different than steel or aluminum). Unless you don't mind a $300 failed experiment, it's probably best to have somebody with a track record building Ti frames up do it for you. In a single stack, does 40SW loaded "Long" like we do in our SV/STI's work as well? How about 10mm? For a defensive gun, it might make sense to stay in a readily available caliber with a good choice of defensive ammo compatible with the gun (ie, NOT loaded long).. e.g. 45ACP. 9x23 factory is hard to come by. Not sure how much you've shot a single stack, but a lot of grip on the frontstrap is not really required. My Ti Commander just has vertical serrations, and my Gov't has a plain frontstrap. Grip there has never been a problem. If I were to build a home defense / large gun again, it would definitely be a SV/STI short dustcover without a magwell, & fixed sights. At the pistol fighting class I took this last weekend, the 20+1 capacity of my limited gun gained criticisms for being a gamer, but I was putting more rounds on target faster than most. For carry, I like minimal bulk, so that means singlestack without a rail. -z
  14. +1 what Paul said. For example, at the Tiger Valley 3Gun match, there was a 60-round 300-yard standards stage. The target was a B27, any hit on the black counted. Position was prone on a bipod or your pack. 120 seconds. There were 17 shooters who had LESS THAN 20 hits (1/3rd), and 12 of those had less than 10. I had only one miss shooting with iron sights and a 100 yard zero, because I knew my load has 13-14" drop at that distance. Many of the failures on that stage were because people had a 15-25 yard zero and had no clue about the trajectory.
  15. Was there ever a definitive answer if the Aimpoint + magnifier would be considered one optical sighting device, or two? (hence tac vs. open)
  16. I've been shooting the MSTN QC comp for quite a while.
  17. TA11 better for 3Gun because: eye relief longer, eye/scope alignment more forgiving due to larger exit pupil
  18. The best place to read about the state of the art in terminal ballistics is: http://www.firearmstactical.com/ and here's a good intro: http://www.firearmstactical.com/hwfe.htm The quick summary is that any of 9x19, 357SIG, 40SW, or 45ACP will perform about the same provided you are using one of the premium self defense loads -- that data is listed on FTI also.
  19. Whenever I wanted to do that, I just stuck a piece of duct tape over the front end of the scope...
  20. John, The pictures I took are here http://www.demigod.org/~zak/DigiCam/SPSC-W-2005/ but I didn't get around to writing a match report mainly because I can't remember each of the 10-15 different stages. It was a lot of police-sniper-style shooting: 1/4" - 1" targets at 100 yards, 2-3x size scoring surfaces at 200-300 yards; shape & face ID; "card" location; moving targets at 50-300 yards. There were only 4 targets (LaRues) beyond 300 yards. The vast majority of the targets were paper, with I think 6 steel targets at 200-300 yards (2" @ 200y swinger for day 2 cold bore, and a team KYL on steel at 300. Probably a third of the courses of fire had a generous time limit (my perception as a 3gunner), the rest had no time limit. Obviously quite different from ITRC or MOR type shooting. Many of the targets were "optically" challenging especially in the mirage- my Leupold 3.5-10x40mm M1 could not resolve the smallest targets. Round count was right around 110 for the 3 days. Organization was excellent. Scoring was straightforward. Not sure if I'd shoot it next year. For similar $$ and time off work, I'd rather head to Rifles Only or TacPro based on what I've heard. If I did go back, I'd bring an AR15 in 223 instead of a bolt rifle. To keep this on topic, having a 10 round magazine was a big help on the 10 round, double mover stage. -z
  21. In detachable box magazines.. Oh, woops. When shot difficulty trumps shoot and reload speed, you can single load from a pouch, because there is relatively little time penalty to load a single additional round into an empty gun. When reloads are mandatory like in standards, you are pretty much screwed.
  22. FWIW, my favorite 9x19 practice load is a 124gr plated RN at 1.130" nominal, 4.2gr Titegroup. About 132PF.
