Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks for the hints-will check and get back. Larry
  2. I've got a 9mm 1911 (Spartan) that I'm having some issues with. Some are almost surely magazine related, some I'm not too sure about. Going through the gun, I found what I considered a 'loose' (undertensioned) extractor, but I've only ever built .45's in the past. Do you look for about the same or (I'm assuming) less tension on the case of a 9mm compared to a .45 1911? I typically want the extractor in a .45 to firmly hold the case against the breechface, but allow it to slide smoothly out from under it when pushed down. Is that about the same for a 9mm? For the record, the gun (when it runs, which is about half the time with 10 round mags) shoots like a house on fire... Thanks, Larry
  3. I just went through something similar, although my son was 16 when we started him last year. I put aside my personal preferences, and bought him an XDM. I wanted to minimize the gun-handling concerns while he became used to competing, and felt a gun that didn't require manual manipulation of the safety increased his ability to concentrate on other fundamentals. A year and a half later, and he's yet to be so much as corrected by an SO during a match. And at our last match, he was eighth out of 60+ shooters, so I'm feeling like we made some good choices. We've discussed moving him to a 1911, but he's really liking the XDM (obviously) and doesn't feel it's become a limitation yet. Just something to consider, and I realize it's not what you asked about, so I apologize for going off-topic. Larry
  4. I believe you're referring to 'staking' the hammer pin within the hammer. Some do, some don't; it's essentially fully captive when in service. And not to be rude, but you don't 'change parts' on a 1911; you fit them. It's a significant, and not just semantic, difference. All HK's were made by HK; 1911's have been made by all sorts of folks all over the globe, and it's not really a 'drop-in' system. I'd suggest doing a bit of reading with Kuhnhausen or someone similar before making any ignition system modifications; it's astoundingly easy (ask me how I know!) to turn a 1911 into a dangerous and malfunctioning weapon. Just MHO, of course- Larry
  5. Well, the Browning HiPower has a detent ball captive in the safety itself. Always seemed like MORE of a pain, to be honest. Larry
  6. It's always risky offering an opinion on the internet about a gun function, so please take this as advice, and not direction. Moving the slide should only be moving the disconnect; from the first problem you describe, it sounds like the disconnect/sear interface is an issue. I'd take the slide, grips, grip safety and safety off and cock the hammer, then push the disconnect down to see how it's interacting with the sear. That might show you what you need to know- As far as the hammer following the slide, could be the same thing, could be something different. Isolate variables and go after one issue at a time. Larry
  7. I would like to apologize. There is no reason why it should take so long. I just had a meeting with my employees and we renewed our committment to process returns within 24 hours. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. I have spent a lot of energy to have the reputation that we have at Dawson Precision and customer satisfaction is our #1 priority. Please contact Annie at 866-300-1911 so we can make sure everything has been taken care of. Thank you again! Dave Dawson See, that's why I bought my last pistol from Dawson, and why I'll buy my next one there. The man whose name is on the letterhead takes this whole 'customer' thing seriously. In fact, the last time I ordered a sight, I got a call from a rep. making sure my measurements (which were off) were correct. She straightened me out, then reminded me that if they didn't work out they'd replace them at no charge until they worked right. This ain't Walmart.... Larry
  8. That's dead sexy! What price range are we talking about? Larry
  9. How long to put 70% in a 3" circle at 25 yards? About twenty years, but I can usually do it now. Larry
  10. Has anybody tried the Metalform 'Ultra' 9MM/10 round mags Dawson has on sale? They look to be the only 10 rounder with the 'feed ramp' built into the front, and that seems to be what everyone loves about the Springfield Metalforms. I want to stock up on mags, but haven't heard of a 9mm/10 round mag yet that works for everyone- Larry
  11. Thanks for the info. Has anyone tried the Metalform Ultra mags that Dawson has on sale (for....gulp...$50 or so) right now? Just wondering if there could be an advantage to those that I'm overlooking- Larry
  12. The grip size and shape of the XD don't match up exactly with any of the backstraps on the XDm, in my opinion. There is a subtle difference in shape which I find makes the XD much more comfortable than the XDm, and that's having owned both in 9mm. Larry
  13. Is there any reason you couldn't just raise a bit of a polymer burr on the frame, such as done when stippling the frame, to help hold the pin tight? Larry
  14. Thanks for the info, gentlemen. I'm guessing, since this happened with both 38 super and 9x23, that it's not a 'rim' issue, right? Larry
  15. I have an older Witness full-size in wonder finish, chambered for .38 super. I've got a stock EAA magazine and two MecGar magazines, and all three nose-dive when loaded past 8-10 rounds. I know the 9MM magazines are noted for this, but is it common with the .38 super as well? I've also had problems with rounds 'binding' when loading more than 12 or so; the rounds wedge in the magazine, lock and allow the topmost round or two to actually fall out, as they're under no spring tension. (This is with factory Remington and Winchester WB ammo.) With less than 8 rounds, this thing shoots very nicely with either 38 super or 9x23. I'm just wondering if there's any way to get the mags to work at capacity? Thanks, Larry
