Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Has anyone had any experience with Atlanta Arms and Ammo .45 ACP 230 FMJ factory reloads? I have had good experiences with their 9mm 147 rounds but seem to be having mixed results with their .45 ACP in terms of accuracy. No jams and fairly clean but accuracy and POI seem significantly worse than CCI Blazer or Winchester White Box. For those who are not familiar with Atlanta Arms they are not affiliated with Georgia Arms that produces the "canned heat", of which I have heard lots of bad reviews. Atlanta Arms provides the Glock team with a more expensive new brass 147 gr 9mm and apparently also provides ammo to several US millitary shooting teams, but these are again their higher end new brass ammo.
  2. Quick update, I decided to buy an Ed Brown Executive Elite SS. I have about 500 rounds through it so far and have been very impressed. No malfunctions of any kind, relating to the gun (more below). The fit and finish are excellent and accuracy is certainly beyond my capabilities but I have managed some free-standing 5 shot groups of under 1.5" at 15 yards. I am sure it can do better but given that I intend to use it as a carry and tactical gun this is really academic. The one problem I have encountered relates to the extra 8 shot mags that I bought from Ed Brown. Turns out that the magazine well is cutting into the plastic mag bumper and causing these mags to seat too far so that they can (not always) jam against the ejector which in turn jams them and causes them to obstruct the slide. Obviously not good. The standard 7 round mag works perfectly since it has a metal base plate which prevents over-seating of the mag. I have spoke to Ed Brown and am sending the 8 shot mags back for them to look at. I am not sure what they can do to avoid this but I would be surprised to hear that I am the first to have this problem. If necessary I will just get more of the standard 7 shot mags to replace the 8 shot ones.
  3. Any thoughts on Nighthawks or Heinie guns by Nighthawk?? What about the GRP Nighthawk?
  4. Someone help me out. I forgot what the formula is for how much your POI changes at 25 yards for every 1 1000ths of an inch in front sight elevation. Trying to get the right front sight for my rear fixed Heinie on a Glock 34. Heinie web page says that G34 often shoot 2.5 to 3" high at 25 yrds and offer a higher front sight should this happen.
  5. Okay this may be personal preference but what's the thought on single vs double stack 1911s - e.g. STI Lawman vs STI Edge?? For those set on single stack, what would you choose, Lawman, Baer Thunder Ranch Special or other similar priced Baer, or TRP Pro. The last of which may be a bit over my budget.
  6. Seems like a lot of people like the STI guns. Having not shot any of their guns what is the thought relative to single vs double stack models? I like the Lawman but the Edge and Tactial 5.0 also look interesting. Preferences? Reliability of double stacks??

    Glock 34 accuracy

I have only about 1500 rounds through my G34 and have not made any mods except sights and Vanek classic trigger. What type of accuracy can be expected at 25 yards? So far I know it is my shooting that is the limiting factor. What is the feeling on match grade barrels, worth it? What kind of accuracy improvement is realistic?

    Glock 34 MODS

Okay, makes sense. I can still stop Boresight. Maybe I should just send my G17 to them since this is my carry gun and leave the 34 production legal and just put in more time to get used to the grooves. Thanks again.

    Glock 34 MODS

Thanks for the info on USPSA. I see that the G34 IS a production gun. I was confusing it with IPSA where the G34 is NOT a production gun. Either way I hate the finger grooves and would prefer to learn to shoot it well and have fun for now. IF the bug really bites me and I cannot live with the disadvantage of being in the limited division I guess I can always go to another gun. Thanks.

    Glock 34 MODS

I have a new Glock 34 which I am trying to tweak a little. I have not been involved in any competitive shooting but would like to start. I understand that the Glock 34 is not a production gun due to its barrel length so I will use my G 17 for that. So far I have put Heinie 50+ Slantpro fixed sights, vanek classic trigger and I just sent it off to have the grip reduced and finger grooves removed by Boresight solutions. Everything else is stock. Any other suggestions??
  11. Not sure if this problem was ever solved. I am having the same issue with my new G34. I tend to think that it may be the extended slide release lever. As I moved to a high thumb grip I started having the slide lock open a couple of times due to my thumb hitting it. Perhaps now I am doing the opposite. I will start by removing the extended lever and replacing it with the standard and then see what happens. IF anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.
  12. Looking for some advice. I am interested in getting a 1911. Never had one. I shoot Glocks mostly. I am looking for a very reliable, full size, tactical (fixed sights, rail nice but not a must) 1911 that will be a gun that I can use both for carry and practical competitions. I have looked into some of the custom shops and frankly am not sure I am ready to pay $5K and up for a gun. I don't want to put any price caps on recommendations but would prefer a gun that is less than $2,500. All suggestions are appreciated.

    SIGHTS FOR MY 34

I have had tons of problems with the adjustable Dawson rear and fiber optic front on my G 34. Shot 7.5" high at 25 yards with .285 front sight so Dawson sent me the tallest front they make, .335 which is huge. Still shoots about 1.75 to 2" high at 25 yards. I want to move to the Hienie fixed. Noticed that their web page also says that the G34 can shoot 2+" high at 25 yards but that they will sell you a higher front sight at a discount within 30 days if you have this problem. Can anyone else tell me what height front sight they are running with fixed Hienie rear and which model rear sight you are using. Thanks.
  14. Okay another quick update. First, Randy Cain's Tactical Handgun 101 at Southern Exposure in Lakeland, FL was terrific. I cannot say enough about it. Half the class was made up of very experienced shooters who had taken the class several times before. I found this curios but soon understood; you could take this class 3 times a year for the next 10 years and still get something new out of it each time. I am already signed up for the next class. As to the G34. I had more problems with my Dawson adjustable sights. The rear almost flew off the gun and but for the help and expertise of the class coordinator who is also a gunsmith I would have been done. The gun still shoots about 1.5-2" high at 25 yards. I am planning on going back to fixed sights, probably Heine although I saw that on their web page they acknowleged that some G34 owners have experienced that their guns shoot 2" high at 25 yards with their standard front sight! I will keep you posted. For those interested in Randy's class go to www.guntactics.com
  15. Update. So I received the 0.335 front sight from Dawson and took my Glock 34 back to the range. It seems to be shooting deadon at 15-20 yards with rear cranked all the way down using Black Hills 115grain FMJ. I couldn't shoot at 25 since the back lights were out but I will be attending Randy Cain's TH101 course next week so I should have plenty of opportunity to test it out and report back more. I will take my H&K P7M13 as back up, just in case. As for the holster fit, I have a bladetech holster and, yes, the 0.335 front sight was too high to fit. I took the holster apart and using a torch lighter heated up the front sight grove reccess and then scrape a little out. Took about 5 minutes and the front sight no longer touches the holster. All is good for now.
