  1. Hello, I'm starting to take 3-Gun a lot more serious. It's a nice departure from the pistol crowd. With that, I'm wanting to get up to speed on how things are done. For shot. Do most people reload their ammo, or do y'all just buy ammo by flats/cases? If so, what shot, velocity, etc. I imagine that a Sporting Clays load would work well. I usually buy the Federal/Wal-mart 100 round box. I recall that it's a 3 dram load with # 7-1/2's or 8's. I reload for trap, skeet and clays but never have for 3-gun. For slugs, kind of the same thing. I've always just bought the Remington Reduced Recoil. Are there others that folks like? Briley has suggested the Forster slugs. Since they builty my shotgun, I'm pretty well confused. I want accuracy, but I also don't want to beat the hell out of myself. Thanks, Rich
  2. Hello, Just flipping through the JP catalog and saw John with the V-Tac Sling that Kyle developed and wanted to know what folks thought of it. Good, bad, etc. Also, are there other systems that folks like? Thanks, Rich
  3. Hi Kurt, I shoot both. In both, I'm using the Williams peep and fiber optic front. However, my brain is causing some fits when I try out friends' guns with dots. Since I shoot a lot of open pistol, and have a dot on my AR my brain is wondering why there isn't a dot on this gun. Part of me wants to live with it as I do alright without. However, I'm drawn to the darkside heavily. So, I'm looking for information to draw from. Kind of like a tool chest. Pick out which tool you need after you have them all. Any suggestions? On a side note, what do you like for Limited? I'm probably going to shoot the SMM3G in Tactical Class/Scoped Rifle.
  4. Okay. Here's the deal. My current setup on my shotguns (both Open and Limited) is a Williams rear with a fiber optic front sight. I shoot well with it and like the arrangement. However, with all the Open pistol and general rifle shooting that I've been doing, I feel compelled to put a dot on it. So, I wanted to find general concesus as to what folks used on their shotguns for 3-Gun. I've sighted a couple of 1100's with JP/Fire Point dot on their and it's nice as it was out in front (down the rib) and was close to the bore. I've used a Benelli with a Holosight on it, and that wasn't too bad. I think the Benelli was messing me up more than the dot. And like I said above, I use a peep and fiber optic. With SMM3G coming up, I want to have a good chance at doing well, and while practice, practice, practice is easy, I want to get my gear right too. The offhand slug shots at 50-100 yards is what has got me all worked up. Any advice?

  6. Hi Eric, For my two cents, I use the Redi-Mag. It's an ease of motion for me. I grasp the second mag as I hit the mag release. I grasp it with my middle finger and thumb with my index finger on the mag body. That becomes my guide. Where we use it in pistol and it bends at the front of the magwell, I do similarly except it bends as I enter the side of the magwell. Hope that makes sense. You take your eyes off of the target, but I have a fully seated mag. Reloading from pouches, I do a weird technique too. I have the mags pointing up and to my rear. I come off of the foreend and grab the mag fully with my index finger on the spine and reload as if it were a pistol mag. Where it helps to is to have a mag pouch that allows you to angle the holders and I angle towards the right side of my body (opposite direction of pistol). Basically, think of Burkett's description of mag holder angle on your belt and do the same for rifle, except with the mag facing up and to the rear (I'll show you at Yolo, unless you're going to the Infinity, then I'll show you at Richmond, the week after). Oh. Almost forgot. I like the Redi-Mag and a piece of junk 30 round mag for short quick stages when you're prone to use as a pivot/swivel in lieu of my bi-pod. Rich
  7. ARMS mounts are the only way to go. Simply for two reasons: 1 - When you remove them and mount them again, they return to zero. 2 - When you travel for a match (especially by air) you can remove the scopes (I use a scope and a dot) and then mount them and they return to zero (I know that it's kind of the same argument, but it works...sort of). If you're looking for a longer accessory rail, the long from GG & G is awesome. I used to run a C-more and then a flip up rear sight. Switched when the eye sight started going to hell. Hope that helps.
  8. Oh. Forgot one thing. In addition to TTI, another good company to work with is K2 Sports (www.k2-sports.com).
  9. Hi, I love JP to death. I've got two rifles that they've worked on for me and don't regret it a second on what the cost was. With that said, I would say with the obsession that people have with pre-ban rifles (for whatever reason) you should be able to fetch a fair price and as such pay for all if not most of a ready to run JP rifle. After that, I'm guessing you've got all the gear necessary, you're good to go with a good scope. The route that I usually direct most new folks is with a post ban DPMS and then add in parts that YOU like, but it sounds like you've got that all figured out. I do this only for the initial outlay of coin for the DPMS vs. JP. Just my two Lincoln's. Hope that helps. Rich
  10. Dream brings up another great point. With my first open gun, it had somewhere around 50,000 rounds on it. One day I took it out for accuracy and it wasn't hitting plates at 15 yards. Sure enough, there was 50,000 rounds of junk in the comp. Once cleaned out, everything was back to normal. Hope that helps.
  11. Oops. Knew that I forgot something. Chris is right on the dot size. I switch between a 4 MOA and 6 MOA dot (depending on how my eyes are tracking the dot during practice before a match). Also, if you're getting a star burst, start with cleaning everything on the scope (i.e. the lens the diode, etc.). If after that you still have a bit of a "starburst" it's usually the diode. The good news is that you can buy another one and they're relatively inexpensive. The bad news is that there are good diodes and bad ones. Outside of going to C-More and finding a couple that you like (which I've been told that some folks do) it's pretty much luck of the draw. The sights are great though and I haven't doubted the decision once to use it in lieu of a tube or other heads up scope. Lastly follow George's advice and have your eyes checked. I have/had astigmatism (spelling?) and somehow am slowly growing out of it and I've seen an improvement in what I see while I'm shooting. Hope that helps.
  12. Hello, With my Open Gun, I get 0.5" groups at 50 yards. A lot of that is my gunsmith, but too is the ammo. Rusty Kidd built the gun and while it took some time, it is my second Viper and love it to death. It's got about 20,000 rounds through it and is as tight and accurate as the day I got it (just runs better now). In any case, I sight the gun in at 25 yards. My load is VV N350 (8.0 grains I think), with a 124gr. Montana Gold CMJ. The complete metal jacket on the bullet is much more accurate than an FMJ and yet gives me a feed/reliability benefit over a JHP (especially if you tumble your ammo) by being a round nosed bullet. Just my two Lincolns.
  13. Hello, Looking for a gunsmith other than the normal responses (i.e. EGW, Gilmore, etc.), that build Bianchi Cup pistols. I know of Ross Carter and Frank Glenn, but am curious to see if there is anyone else out there. Too, is there any place to get the barricade barrel shroud other than through Gilmore. He's pretty proud of those and they're not cheap. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Rich
