  1. Well my sight picture/shot call on that last one was iffy, should I give it another? It sure seems like I'm moving slow. Dang, my gun is empty, I guess I should reload. (IDPA) Now what was it I was going to concentrate on this stage? Grip/arms/recoil control, that's right Grip/arms/recoil control, Wow, that’s makes a big difference, I should do that all the time. You know I’m still mad about that advice I got years ago to "just let the gun recoil/move, don't try to control it. Worst advice I ever got! OK I'm done.
  2. From the rules: So from what we know; stage brief and rules, 10 secs for a miss and if you fail to engage add another 5 secs. No mention of disappearing targets in the rules. Maybe shooting the 10 clays first is a better idea. David E. Like I said, game/match changer.
  3. Why yes it is, I meant 27 not 17. Starting with 9 in the gun, load 18 while shooting the 10 birds and some steel, goal is not to go dry. 16 steel and 10 clays for 26 total targets, 9+18=27 so I will have 1 shell left over. Man this is going to be really hard since I can't count, add, or subtract much less hit birds in the air! David E.
  4. Yes the solid pice between the holes goes at 1. You may already know but the JM comp has a top and bottom. There is less solid between the holes/slots on the top to provide some push down. I have seen a few mounted upside down. David E.
  5. Sight unseen, my plan is load 2, shoot 2, repeat until I've loaded 18 (18+9=27, 1 extra) edit to fix the math. I will be trying to maintain a load 2, 1 steel, 1 clay sequence and skip the steel if needed and when going from box to box. With 10 seconds per miss, even with the scoring system used, I think this stage is a game/match changer. David E.
  6. Where is the "charge Line"? Are the shooting boxes behind the charge line? I'm going to have plenty to do just hitting 1 clay every 2 seconds and leaving the "charge line" with a full gun (10+1 or 12+1, depending on the size of the car in the other stage) much less shooting some steel in between clays and loading. Now if the boxes are behind the charge line, well then it's going to be real fun. And I would expect the real Pros to all have the same time; 20ish seconds. David E.
  7. I think you shoot the flying clay's first behind a fault line and then move to the boxes to engage the stationary steel? David E.
  8. Looks good to me. - Where’s your left thumb? Is it tight to the gun? Hard to see from the camera angle. Might want to take another look at your grip/thumb positions. - Again might be the camera angle, but all reloads look like you lower the gun too far and might not rotate enough, are you seeing somewhat into the magwell? After the mag is seated does the gun move more out than up into position or up than out? Point being keeping it higher will allow it to enter your field of view sooner and get on target sooner if it is already near eye level and you are just pushing it out vice coming into view from a lower position. - Looks like you might be crowding the barricades in a few instances causing you to break your arm/gun triangle. Along with this, are you ready to shoot when you enter a position? Gun up and on target? - And the hardest thing I struggle with: your movements/gun manipulations don't look urgent. Move like everything is on fire. Control the speed when shooting but do everything else as fast as possible. IDPA: - shooter/stage bust: All reloads begin and end behind cover, not so much on one of the stages. - Stage bust: Threats should not be positioned to allow shoot throughs; the left to right mover looks like it crosses in front of other threats (or maybe it’s just the camera angle). No expert, David E. SSP MA that shoots more like a EX.
  9. Paper traget question: Will the FNH pizza targets be used in this match? Smart A@# comment: I can't believe 3 gun shooters are being asked to shoot flying clays in the air!!! (sarc) and load a shell or 2 every 2 seconds!!! Looks like great stages on the PRO side, now if my 27 round shotgun tube would only fit in the "Smart Car" in stage PRO 2! David E.
  10. I had mine apart to fit and polish it (shell release). If I remember correctly, the button is hollow and is cast. If I were going to try to install a larger button I would: - drill it for clearance of the stud; not enough material to tap. - Epoxy a nut/insert or other female fastener into the hollow area. - install the larger button and file/grind off any excess male thread on the indie of the release. I had considered getting a spare and giving this a try but after using it a while I don't see an advantage that outweighed the possibility of it breaking during a stage. Just don't let that baby go dry! It would be nice if someone like Nordic made an upgrade kit with a new shell release with a larger button and a stronger spring to improve hand cycling. I think they would sell a ton on them. David E.
  11. Dan, I think the rules on the FNH site are last years but most likely will be the same this year? The coupled mags are OK rule dosen't seem to work with the no rifle supporting devices allowed rule? Am I missing something? David P.S. My rifle ran like a champ this past weekend!
  12. Larry, Quick rule question; Are coupled rifle mags OK to use to support/steady the rifle? From Last years rules: 5.3.4.3 Supporting devices (bipods, etc.) are prohibited. 5.3.4.6 Magazine capable of holding no more than 30 rounds inserted at any time. Coupled magazines are permitted. Thanks, David E.
  13. The main 3.gn site said the scoring had been outssourced and the scores were updated.
  14. 14" tall MGM Auto Poppers My link So must you use all 3 guns for every stage? Some stages would allow using only 2, for instance stage #1 handgun and rifle, no shotgun. David E.
  15. Link to new standings: My link Looks like there has been a rule change: The good: You don't have to "beat" any pros to get into pro and the top 16 get in? The bad: If you are outside the top 16 but in the top 25 you don't get the chance as per the previous rules. Looks like a better deal. The standings still lack a breakdown of how many match scores make up the score listed. I was previously on the list but not now, no matches shot yet. David E.
  16. Hey Jer, Wished I could have made it to the matches this year. Had a great time shooting with you and your dad last year at Topton. What MOA and what position was the 180? Was it within your ability for the position you used? Something I have been working on is knowing my safe MOA ability from each position. For instance; Prone I am good for 2 MOA, reverse kneeling/barricade 4 MOA, Off-hand 8 MOA (I made up these numbers so I don't look bad!!!). So when stage planning not only look at the distance but plan to use the most stable position needed/possible. Like picking a shotgun choke, if in doubt go safer. For me, bench rest shooting is tempting because it’s easy compared to prone, kneeling, sitting, reverse kneeling, roof-top, standing barricade, or off-hand, however it is rarely used in competition so I save my rounds for kneeling, off-hand, barricade practice. From Jerry M's DVD on rifle; get good at barricade/reverse kneeling and use prone only when needed and/or it’s the last position. Hope to see you at a match some time. David E.
  17. Had some problems with rifle function again at the 3 Gun match on the 7th. Affected my mental game as my stage planning suffered after getting angry with the rifle. So on the last stage of the day we had some close paper, 2 shots inside the perf required for full score, so I decided to just shoot. I had one miss on the first array but luckily the one hit was an A. Hard to believe I could miss this close http://youtu.be/8vNTpbB_qy4
  18. Just testing my reflex skills, unsat!!! Sent you a PM. David
  19. I hate the feeling of helplessness as I unscrewed my AR buffer tube only to watch the buffer retaining pin and spring shoot across the garage onto/under/behind my junk shelf. I felt like the kid on "Christmas Story" with the lug nuts!!!!!
  20. Just guessing, but based on other mechanical joint designs: I think it's just a design/tolerance thing. The idea being that the screw holding the stock on tightens "metal to metal" on the screw/stock butt/buffer tube end giving you a solid stop when tightening the screw vice compressing the stock into the lower and having a "spongy" compression of the stock limiting the screw tightening. So I would expect the stock to rotate very slightly (1-2 degrees?) but almost imperceptible front to back. Without locktite, a threaded fastener torqued in a metal to metal joint is much less likely to loosen than a fastener torqued in joint with give as would be the case if the stock were squeezed by tightening the screw. My A1 and A2 are/were both this way. Or I'm just completely wrong. David E.
  21. I shot irons for one season and some of the issues I struggled with were: - In bright sunlight on the front sight, glare can be an issue. I guess there are several ways to combat this, old timers use a "smoker" to make the front sight a flat black, Birchwood Casey has sight black in a spay can that does pretty good job. You can spray it on for one stage and wipe it off for the next. Another way is with a hooded front sight. - Low contrast/dark target. At the AR 15 pro/am there was a MGM flasher (10" steel) in the shade at maybe 200 yds, bright morning sunlight on the shooter, morning haze close to the ground. I found my front sight disappeared in the dark background and I could not see my front sight. I later read where Bruce Piatt started out shooting irons in three gun and used a small FO front sight and a 6 hold and I started using that same set-up My link .050 width, and it worked well for me after I dulled the FO rod a little with a sharpie (the exposed length, not the tip you see when aiming). Otherwise in full sunlight the FO rod was blazing and made seeing distant targets a challenge even with a 6 hold. With it dulled I could still see it against a dark background/target and see a crisp outline of the front sight post in bright light. - Going from close (5yds) to far (400yds) can be done several ways, going from larger to small peep is a little painful on the clock. I found if I had a short course say out to 100 yards I could just use the large peep and make good hits. If the COF was 0-300 I would just use the small peep and front and rear ears for close targets. Using the small peep with both eyes open and a good cheek weld is still pretty fast up close. If I were to do this again, and I might, I would work on using the large peep from 0-200 as I think accuracy would be sufficient once you got a handle on the change in elevation, I think there are some “same plane” rear apertures out there that would make this easier. Good luck!
  22. The above link just worked for me. This link also lists the number of matches shot. My linkTry this link:
  23. For me "seeing the sights life" is the image I see as the shot breaks as if I just took a picture of the sights and target with the trigger being the shutter release. When in the zone and everything is going slow, you have the time to evaluate the shot/sight picture and decide if the shot was good or not before the sights come back on target. Also when in the zone, you can see whatever you want to and what I care about is the sight picture when the shot breaks and when the front sight returns to the target/next target. I don't think "seeing the sights lift" means following the front sight through the recoil cycle, it just means seeing it as the shot breaks and again when it returns to the target. So to answer your question; while I might have a front sight focus, I don't follow it, I keep my eyes on the target and the front sight stays in my peripheral vision during the cycle. But I suck so my opinion is worth what you paid for it.
  24. So depending where you look it looks like there are 70-80 shooters in the semi-pro series. Since the rules say they will let the top 25 semi-pros compete for pro-series spots against the bottom pros, 1/3 of the semis will get the chance. Also looks like the top 5-10 currently in the semi-pro ranking are already shooting/have finished near the top at major matches. So is there a chance some club level/regular shooters will get to shoot against the pros? Or are there 25 ringers or shooters that turned down pro last year in the semi series that just haven't shot any matches yet?
