  1. First match with taccom quads today and 12 round tube. Fumbled a little but went pretty well. Can't imagine using quads with anythig less than a 12 tube after today.David E. The match went pretty well today. I fumbled a quad once or twice. The worst was during the blaster / rambo stage (stage 2 I think). I forgot to take off my strong hand glove and quad loading with the glove didn't work out great.Do you like the Taccom loaders? I have a friend who was eyeing them. I like the Taccoms, but have no experience with other makers. I have to tell you the whole glove thing is just not "hip" in the competition thing and the cool kids will make fun of you. Just kidding of course, but I think you will find in competition shooting of this type (short non-physical stages) you loose some dexterity with any type of glove which results in going slower. In other types of shooting I could see where gloves could be more of a positive than a negative. Hope to see you shooting at some more local matches. David E.

  3. Sounds like they gave you an honest answer. I reload 9mm on a loadmaster and always give the brass a shot of "one shot" in a ziplock bag, no problems. The only problem I have run into is seating primers on crimped/tight pocket brass which I suspect would be the same on almost any press. Timing/adjestment of the loadmaster is very critical to smooth operation.
  4. Matt, I can't take any credit for NB matches I don't do anything but shoot there, I just know the MD who is the area director and runs great matches. I will be there along with Dan S. above; lots to learn from Dan and others he hangs with. David E.
  5. I see you are from CT and if you are talking about the New Bedford match this Sunday, Knowing the MD I would bet it will be run to the letter of the current rule set. Maybe you just misunderstood something posted on another site? So stated simply I think the rule is: empty start=8 max in gun, loaded start = 9 max in gun, after the start whatever you can fit into the gun! I have gone from 8 to 9 to 10 to now 12 in the tube so you might want to give it a little time before spending the cash. David E.
  6. I posted some pics of my 1301 with loading port work in the load 2/4, weakhand thread, post 89 if anyone is interested. Might have been better to post it here. cant do a link with this tablet thing! David E.
  7. Fireman489, The 1301 serial number limits the amount of material you can remove from the left side of the port. Luckily the right side is the side that needs most material removed for quad and I think load 2 would be the same. Getting the first shell started is easy but without cutting into thee side of the port it is hard to get the second shell to follow because you are pushing with the palm of your hand. The phots are my current but I may go further. this photo is the left side limited be serial number. The cut is almost parallel to the bottom of the receiver. this is the right side which is an angle cut. and just another pic. . you might see the small chamfer I put on the forend. The tape is just a reference line parallel to the receiver.
  8. My experience with Quad loading is that it requires less practice than weak hand to load a given number of shells. I have been loading weak hand for about 4 years and my load 4 time in the video below was cold with no practice. My load 4 time was 4.29. The next video is from yesterday and my load 8 time was 5.83 seconds. http://youtu.be/lYugYzAfuTg http://youtu.be/IWXO8ymw-_w I finished loading port mods to my Beretta 1301 Saturday morning, practiced about an hour on Saturday and an hour Sunday. The video below is from Monday. I did have plenty of fumbles during my live fire practice but compared to weak hand my learning curve was much faster. I consider myself a “50%” shooter, which means I finish with close to 50% of the winners points. I use TACCOM quad loaders.
  9. While not the best, the serial number is on the right side. At least for quad loading I took most of the material off the other side which works for right hand quad load. I did remove material from the serial number side but left maybe 1/16" to the number.
  10. Hey Dan, Yes, strong hand. No haven't done live fire, hot barrel. I think by maintaining the weakhand grip on the forend my hand stops the rotation of the gun before the barrel touches skin! I can only rotate the gun a little more than 90 degrees not completely upside down. One thing I learned is that it's important to keep my weak hand forward on the forend or I hit my weak hand loading the first 2 of 4. I should get to the range for some live fire on a plate rack on monday. I'll take video if I don't suck too bad.
  11. My Beretta 1301 and quads on my new ELS belt. I think I'm done with the loading port, a little more practice and I'll know. After more work on the loading port this morning my first try for loading 8 I easily beat an 8 second par time. Changed to 6 seconds, then 4 seconds. I still have plent of fumbles but compared to weak hand I'll never go back! I will keep 1 4x4 as a backup. Once again I think I will be getting another ext tube to have 12 in the tube, like Jesse said it just makes sense with quads. Shout out to Tim of Taccom, I sent him a pm and mentioned I was mounting them on an ELS belt and he sent some additional screws to make sure I had what I needed.
  12. So it sounds like you only have the problem when hand cycling vice shooting the gun? I would guess/bet that if your gun loads fine when shooting then it will load when hand cycling if you how should I say, cycle it like a man? Just kidding, but really if you cycle it aggressively I think the mechanical shock of shooting the gun can be duplicated enough to make it load from a full mag tube. I will try to post a link when I find it. Found it, dang almost 2 years ago now. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=142693 It can be important to be able to hand cycle rounds for empty chamber starts so figuring out how to make your gun hand cycle/load is in my view important.
  13. Concerning long range targets; looking at the comments from several of the bigger 2013 matches it looks like the shooter’s opinions/comments post match are influenced by a combination of targets used and how the ROs/match staff maintained, calibrated, called(or did not call) hits on those targets. So since the perfect long range target system seems to not have been invented yet, the match staff must compensate to ensure as fair a match as possible is provided for each shooter. Hopefully the MDs/RMs/ROs read the good and bad comments from their matches and if possible make changes in equipment and procedures to improve.
  14. Life is about choices, you like many of us chose a family and the work required to support such family over the single life. Just think when they are all grown up, through school, move out (at least once), get decent jobs, and are possibly married, your major expenses will be over assuming you save enough now to cover all expenses vice borrowing later. Then when you are say 50ish, you and the little lady can go to matches together! In all seriousness, you must have enough money to justify spending on this indulgence that is for you alone. Concerning the time, make a yearly plan that the wife can agree to up front. It would be unfair if you did not devote significant payback time to your wife and kids to cover your guy time. This would include I think giving her time by herself (you taking care of the kids) or time with you and no kids. Why do you think they say life is over when you get married? Even more so when you add kids. Now if you figure out how to quickly become independently wealthy then you have some choices. Concerning important things like birthdays, I skipped my daughter's violin recital once to finish a volunteer project with habitat for humanity. I have regretted it ever since but I don’t get a “reshoot” on that one. And the more I think about it there are very few, if any, “re-shoots” (do-over’s for bad decisions) with your wife and/or kids.
  15. Joebob's, in stock, 1100.00 shipped.
  16. Jesse, I just got some of these but they seem really tight on the shells. I know the instructions say to heat them to set the tension, any tips on this? Also a tutorial on how a loading port should be modified for quad loading would be great! thanks, david
  17. I alluded to this earlier, what you and Kurt are indirectly saying is that you should let a method of reset dictate the stage design and limit what you can do on a given range with given resources. I don't understand that logic, it seems constricting. Again, I'm not sure where the notion of "you just can't accept it can be done better" is coming from, seeing I'm in full agreement that there is space for improvement. I find it odd that the two of you are taking the stance that there is only one true way of fixing a problem. It narrows the actual space of solutions. As far as I can determine the position is that there is ONLY ONE SINGLE TRUE WAY of fixing the issue of target calling, it is the same single way used for 100 years, and there is no room for a better newer solution. I truly respect the experience you guys have, but this position seems more like religion then a solution. It seems to me to be just as narrowly locked into a single way of thinking as I'm being accused of. +1
  18. Well I hope to travel to more matches in the future and hope I will have the opertuiny to shoot an possibly work matches designed as you describe. Untill then I will volunteer for the matches I can and do everything I can to make the playing field the same for all shooters with the equipment used. David
  19. I don't care who you are, that is funny stuff right there. I did run into a group of sick individuals who thought hanging golf balls with fishing line made good self indicating targets.
  20. New guy here, should keep my mouth shut but, I guess wind has never blown over a falling plate and was considered a hit, or influenced the outcome of a match. The last match I worked where we were calling hits on long range targets if nothing else was consistent from shooter to shooter. If shooting a match on natural terrain I would guess falling plates/using bunkers would be less than optimal, stage 5 fnh. You would think a bunch of smart shooters would use the best equipment available when cost allows no matter if it were new or old technology. Kurtm should quit his day job and run all 3 gun matches So I guess shooters will decide which matches they like and which ones they don't and I hope all shooters with constructive criticism will give their feedback to the MD. I blame all my spelling errors on this stupid new fangled tablet and drinking too much last night, is it still night right?
  21. Looks like there were about 325 shooters this year at FNH. If you take out 100 for RO/staff that leaves 275 to shoot over 2 1/2 days or 55 shooters per half day. On stage 5 it was common to be be letting the on deck shooter take a sight picture when the 180 second par timer sounded from the last shooter's start and the on deck shooter could not take a sight picture until the range was clear/reset. So these matches (SOF and others discussed above) with distant steel that had to be reset; how many shooters over how much time? And how many steel? FNH stage 5 had 8 steel from about 100 to 325 yds.
  22. Picked up my FNX-40 today from the ffl, awsome prize table when I finish high enough to get a gun! The shipping ffl was all over getting the transfer done and shipped super fast!
  23. Our stage brief included: "the only words the RO will say to you (the shooter) is "hit" or stop". So our answer was a blank stare. My view is that coaching changes or has the ability to change the outcome/finish order of the match. That alone is reason enough for me not to coach or be coached not to mention at a major match like the FNH the prize table is based on finish order. Now a local match with new shooter(s) and no prizes, I would most likely coach.
  24. I ran many shooters through stage 5 at the FNH match and only one shooter, a junior, failed to hit a long range target but came back and engaged and hit a different long range target he previously hit thinking it was the one he missed (left colt=hit twice & left skinny=engaged but not hit). While I was ROing our spotters called "hit" each time a shooter hit a piece of steel no matter if they had already engaged/hit the steel. It was all I could do not to coach him, but I did not.
