Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Wow I wish I could say the same Duane. My gun(not allowed in Idpa), holster(also not allowed in idpa), and I dont use a mag pouch just 1 xtra in the pocket. and you would never catch me in a 5.11 vest on the street but I just orderd one for idpa..lol Thats one of my beefs with idpa I wish we could compete with what we actually carry..lol What do you have that you can't compete with? Is the pistol less then 9mm or .38? Is it a pocket holster or crossdraw?
  2. Not sure on the most popular vests. I just use my t-shirt or a baseball jersey. Below is from the rule book. Nothing against capes as long as there is no safety issues and it covered your gear when you hold you arms straight out. I would be worried how it worked for you when in seated starting positions. The only thing I could pull from the rules that might be against it is "practical for your environment" but that would be pretty subjective. 3. Concealment Garments. All equipment should be so placed that, when wearing an open concealment garment with your arms extended at your sides and parallel to the ground, it can NOT been seen from the front, rear or sides. Your concealment garment should be practical for your environment and loose enough to allow easy movement. Competition only garments are prohibited. Competition only garments are defined as: vented or mesh vests that allow the firearm, holster, spare ammo or ammo carriers to be visible when standing normally, chest pockets, specially-made pockets or any material inserted in pockets or around pockets to keep the pocket open for stowage of partial magazines after a reload. Garments that are considered “competition only” will incur an FTDR. See “Proper Magazine Retention” in the Glossary for further details.
  3. I got my 20K Wolf SP and LP last week from PV. Used the first 3K already. I have used Wolf before and it has been fine for me. About 6K only had one primer not go off with a good strike. Not perfect but pretty good percentage and it could have been seated bad.
  4. There are basically four people that design stages for our 3-Gun match. All of them shoot rifles left handed. If the stages have any tendency guess which they favor. We would be happy for others to volunteer to setup stages. For the most part if you are going lateral I opt for a start on either end. That is more to protect the shooter from crossing the 180.
  5. So far I have not been hit in the head by brass on the things I have shot. This includes most common rifles ARs included. In basic training shooting a M16 A2 I had a piece of brass make it down my right sleeve. That sucked I do usually catch the En-Bloc Clip from my Garand usually bounces off the top of my hat when it kicks out. I have found on semi-auto rimfire rifles (10/22) my right forearm will sometimes get sprayed with some fragments unburned powder is my guess. Nothing to serious. I would imagine someone who has been right handed his whole life would find it distracting to have brass kicking out through their line of sight but I am so used to it when I shot a left handed Stag AR it felt wrong.
  6. I want to think everyone for the feedback. I have only been shooting action shooting for about 1.5 years and SO for about 9 months. I just wanted some feedback from people with more experience on if I did the right thing based on the IDPA rule book and if I did the right thing just in general based on the situation I was in. I think the feedback is based on the rule book I should of let him continue and see how he handled it but it is probably best I stopped him. Since I stopped him I had no choice but to give him a re-shoot since other then a procedural for going to slide lock past the provided cover he had done nothing wrong or unsafe up to that point. His father was running behind me acting as scorekeeper and followed what and why I did what I did. After all it is his ammo the kid is shooting up.
  7. I got my 20K Wolf primers this morning from Powder Valley. Time to start filling up all the brass I have been accumulating.
  8. I don't know what he would have done if I did not stop him. He did not break the 180 up to that point but to shoot the last target from where he was would have been about 210 degrees based on a 180. He was about 12 years old though and the vision barrier blocked me from seeing the cones and if any body was in the line of fire. They should not have been but I had about a second to call "STOP". This is the stage. Stage 1 on this link. http://www.pmrpcidpa.com/documents/JULY2009_COF.pdf He ended up between T5 and T6 with T7 left to shoot when I stopped him. I guess one question is do I let him make the shot and then DQ him? My job is safety officer and I saw something bad getting ready to happen and stopped it before it could. Maybe he would have stepped sideways and backwards then made the shot no way to know now.
  9. I was working as SO in our club level match this morning and had the following happen. I did what I did based on what I thought was fair and a decision had to be made. I am curious any feedback others may have. The COF had you shooting up to this point. At this point you needed to conduct a reload with retention from behind cover as you would be low on ammo before you turned the corner and engaged three threat targets on the move. Shots must be fired on the move. The targets should have been engaged from cover with strict IDPA course design but the COF called for these targets to be shot on the move so that is what it required. I had a a junior shooter not that it matters but he forgot to do the reload with retention turned the corner moving fired a shot or two went to slide lock did a reload all while taking steps. At this point he shot two targets but had moved off the line enough because he kept moving as required that if he was going to shoot the 3rd target he would have been shooting about 30 degrees up range toward an area I could not see do to vision barriers. I yelled stop before he engaged the target. I had him face down range unload and show clear and I gave him a re-shoot because I stopped him during his run. If he would have engaged the target I would likely have DQd him but I would have to check the where they put out the muzzle safety points but I think those where placed to restrict the 180 on the first target array. It was not considered someone would engage the last target from that angle. Any feedback on if I did the right thing? If not what should I have done? BTW I like the 180 degree rule a lot more then muzzle safe points. As RO/SO I have a feel at all times for the 180. Where the cones are changes as you move and they are usually behind the SO.
  10. All my firearms are setup for standard / right handed other then sling setups. I figured if I was not going to change all of them I didn't want to change any. I borrowed a left handed 1100 or 11/87 once. That just felt weird. The bolt handle was on the wrong side. My 1911s are setup for ambi safety since in IDPA you sometimes have to draw and shoot strong hand only.
  11. I am left handed and there are mainly 4 people who design and setup stages for our monthly 3-gun match. They are all left handed so when people are walking through the stages we hear a lot of this seems easier for left handers. Response. We would love to get more people volunteering to design and setup stages for the match.. Would you like to do one next month. I don't design it so it is more friendly to left handers but when I am running it in my head trying to think it up that is what I come up with.
  12. I wear a button up baseball jersey of my favorite team unbuttoned of course. It works well for me and is about as light as you can get. I maybe loose a few tenths of a second but don't worry about it. If I carry with a owb holster it is what I would use in the real world. I think FL has 1.5 Millon permit holders and I don't think I have seen a tactical vest outside of the IDPA match.
  13. I don't know if you will have a car but I am up in DC right now and went to the Marine Corp Museum this morning. It was very nice. It is in Quantico about 20 miles south DC I think. The NRA museum is also nice I have been there before but you have to leave DC to go to it. We plan to hit Arlington Cemetery tomorrow for my first time. We also plan to hit a Nats game on Thursday at the brand new stadium only important if you like baseball.
  14. Thanks. I will mod the corners for the Aug match. I am heading the range for this month's match in about 12 hours. I drove 1/2 inch 4 foot rebar in to the ground to hold them steady this afternoon. That felt like over kill when I was doing it. I hope I will be able to pull them out tomorrow after the match. Both my kids are shooting the match. Sure takes a lot of time to get all that gear together for three shooters none of which is sharing a firearm....
  15. Thanks everyone for the information. I took over an existing 3-Gun match and am trying to grow it. I have been doing it for 4 months. When I started we had 9 shooters. Last match we had 21 shooters so hopefully we are going in the right direction. I only shot 3-gun about 1.5 years before I became match director and I have never shot 3-Gun other then this match so my experience is not very wide. I also shoot IDPA and IPSC so I am working those matches trying to grow mine. The economic and ammo situation is not helping me much.... This is what I ended up with based on everyones feedback. I apreciate it. Will see how they work tomorrow morning. The wood is 1/2" OSB cut 15x30 with a carpet covering. BTW Some other things I have done to remove excuses to come out is a 2-Gun Rimfire Division (you shoot rimfire pistol for the shotgun part), a Pistol Caliber Carbine Division, and Pistol Only Division.
