  1. I am on the wait list for this match. Is there a way to figure out if I have a reasonable chance of getting in or if it is unlikely due to the numbers ahead of me? I would like to make my spring plans accordingly. Thanks, Jason
  2. I may be slow but I don't see a registration fee on this match. How much is it?
  3. I have the PA 1-6X. It met my budget and I have been happy with it. I have only shot a couple of matches with it but no problems were encountered. The last match I went to had targets out to 400 yards. No problem! I had some nice 68gr HPBT rounds, turned the scope up to 6X and tagged them all.
  4. Excellent match! Lots of fun and well run. As a side note, my nine year old son made me laugh pretty hard Thursday when I was packing up. I told him I was going to this match that would last two and half days. He made some comment about shooting a lot and I asked him how long he thought I would shoot. He said 'about five hours'. I told him that over the whole match I would probably shoot about 15 minutes. He gave me a look like I was the dumbest person on the planet. It really put things in perspective. From his perspective this is not a very efficient sport. Really funny. I told him he would understand when he gets older and participates.
  5. I am trying to picture what the 'magazine over the edge' looks like. Does this mean the rifle is actually resting on the trigger guard? So the handguard does not actually touch the roof?
  6. I have been playing with building my own scope mount for my AR and one parameter I have struggled with is what the 'standard' diameter is for a 30mm scope tube. The one I own is slightly bigger than 30mm but that is not much data to know what the true tolerance range is. Anybody in the know on tube diameter tolerance? I am also interested in 1" tubes? Thanks, Jason
  7. Very good advice! Those 3" #6 shells look pretty stout. Have you seen examples where they would not cycle a semi-auto shotgun? I would think they would work better than low brass cheap shells but you just pay with your wallet and shoulder.
  8. Can spinner killers be buckshot? Can someone define 'spinner killers'? I am not sure what that means.
  9. Will slings be required? Also any prop guns we need to look forward to (or worry about )?
  10. This is an old thread but I thought I would post what I did. I have learned enough to know that this 3-gun sport makes people stupid. A couple of years ago I bought a Mossberg 930 with the 28" ported waterfowl barrel. I then paid to have it cut down to 22" and built it into a nice 3 gun shotgun. It has worked great the last couple of years. This year I went out and bought a 28" barrel and rebuilt the gun as an 11 + 1 long shotgun. Crazy! I did have to work through the same 'how do you cover the ports so you don't get put into open' question. I came up with a two piece approach. One u-shaped piece of metal slides under the rib above the ports and another spacer slides underneath. Two bolts are used to clamp it into place. I spray painted black so it would not be shiny. See pictures: It has worked great so far. Thoughts?
  11. In. I am looking forward to showing off my mediocrity in front of a fine crew of fellow 3-gunners!
  12. I think I was shooting Freedom Munitions reloads. So whatever they load with.
  13. I recently tried this and had about 2 light strikes out of 100 with the 17#. They both fired on the second try. I bumped it up to a 19# and it works 100%. So the 17# is right on the edge for my P226.
  14. Fun match. Lots of good people. Ty Gentry is kind of a butthead (or as he refers to himself 'Mr Douchebag' ) but he is fast. Did I miss where we were supposed to shoot buck shot? I thought the round count said 15 for buck shot but I never saw anywhere that we were to use it.
  15. I used Steve Rose at Rose Action Sports (he was recommended on this thread). He charged $90 for cutting, rethreading the choke, rethreading for the bead, and shipping back. The work looks good. I have not shot it since I got it back (maybe next weekend). I shot a couple of boxes through it before getting it cut. It ran like a champ and only messed up when I messed up. jrmock
  16. Here is my 930 after conversion from a 28" Turkey model. It is now a 22" with a +4 Nordic extension. I like it and it seems like a good shooting shotgun. All the shotgun shooting I have done in recent years has been with Saiga 12 gauges so this is a little different. I have a few wild ideas for custom shell carriers I may play with. jrmock
  17. I signed up for the match assuming it was a Saturday/Sunday format (like it was a couple of years ago when I went). However a friend of mine who is going taught me how to read a calendar and showed me how April 20th is a Friday. I thought WOW!, we are going to be shooting for 3 days! Do I have this right?
  18. I just shoot my Saiga 7.62x39 in 3-gun matches. It is a lot of fun and plenty accurate (I managed to hit the 400 yard targets at the Larue match). However it will never be as fast as a good AR-15. The main thing I like about it is that it just works. It never jams or stops even when it gets a little dirty. I shoot mine with a scope so I can get on a target fast but the follow up shots are always going to be slower than a gas gun. If I ever decide I want to be a super high end competitive guy then I would work on building a good AR-15. With a little thought, preperation, and any equipment you should be able to be mid-pack in a 3-gun match. Getting into that top 25% is where the scores really ramp up and equipment starts to become important. jrmock
  19. When I read through the rules I think it is saying if I use my Saiga 12 gauge I will be shooting in the Open division. Is this right? I will be shooting a normal pistol and normal (scoped) rifle. Do most people in 3-gun Open shoot an open class pistol, open class rifle, and open class shotgun? I am just curious how competitive it is. Thanks, jrmock
  20. I bought a couple of boxes of the Winchester and Remington 1 oz slugs from wal-mart a couple of weeks ago to compare. I shot them through my 19" Saiga at 25yards to 100yards. They both hit the same and seemed identical. At 100 yards with iron sights I could hold a 8-10" group (I think they could do a little better but my sights and shoulder were probably the limiting factor). jrmock
  21. Imagine being in a track meet and someone being three times faster than you in two of five events! HA There is a wide canyon between the top 3-5 and the rest of the field. I can see a top 10 some day, but Respect goes to those way up there. Nice shootin. DC I had the same thought. I know of a few mental mistakes I made, a few errors, but in general I was moving pretty fast. So when I looked at the scores and saw that people were more than twice as fast as me it made me think 'What would it take to get to that level'? The honest answer is more time, money, and commitment than I will every be willing/able to put out. Oh well. I still had a good time. jrmock
  22. I agree with most of the comments also. Prop guns are cool but I would like to get better at using my own guns more than shooting other guns. Secret stages are cool but I think 3 turned out to be too many (which they knew it might). I understand wanting to mix it up but I was disappointed in having no long range rifle shooting with my gun. That is one of the things that I liked about Tac-Pro last time I came. They had the facilities to have some good long range shooting but I felt like that was not taken advantage of. Thoughts and what I like: - Long range rifle - 100 to 300 yards or so with all steel so no resetting. Maybe with some movement to start to get your heart pumping. - Jungle run - Two guns Rifle/pistol or Shotgun/pistol - Secret stages - Mostly steel minimal paper to speed resetting - Prop guns - Should add to the fun but not be the focus (shooters should use their own weapons for the majority of all stages, i.e. Stages 4 and 5 but not 2) - Mult-gun - This was a 3 gun match but I did not use more than one of 'my' guns on any stage. I like transitions (I understand clearing the guns takes longer but that can be dealt with) Well that is what I think, it is worth what you paid for it. jrmock
  23. Just curious if there is a standard after match dinner spot in Stephenville? I am coming solo from Austin so I don't know the area. Any restaurant advice would be appreciated. Thanks, jrmock
  24. Just to throw some more confusion on the whole Saiga 12 issue: I emailed Tac-Pro this morning when I noticed someone was questioning the usage of the Saiga 12 shotguns. My email to Tac Pro: > Tac Pro, > > I have signed up for the 3-gun match on September 11th and I have a > question about shotguns. I was planning on using my Saiga 12 gauge (no > optics, no comps) with 8 round magazines to satisfy the round limit. The > rules only state a round limit and no optics or TEC speed loaders. This > makes me think my Saiga 12 is fine. Am I reading this correctly? Tac Pro Response: The Saiga will be fine for the match as long as it meets the configuration standards in the rules, which it sounds like it does. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks Chase Lerma Sounds like I'm good to go. But this does not jive with the info lefty556 got from the Match Director. jrmock
  25. This answer is not very satisfying and comes across as arbitrary. Why not disallow all shotguns with wooden stocks (I know this is cosmetic but you can get my point)? A good match designer can make a level playing field for shotgunning regardless of gun. It just takes a little thought. I have paid my money so I am going but it is disappointing that I won't be able to use my shotgun. jrmock
