  1. I shoot an XDM as well. I'll be interested to see how similar my results are.
  2. Thanks for the feedback. I guess it just never occured to me that store bought ammo could shoot so soft.
  3. I just began my third season of USPSA production.I've been buying the Remington UMC 9mm 115 gr 250 round value pack and have gotten pretty comfortable with this ammo. A guy at the last match told me that he had taken this ammo to a bigger match at didn't it didn't make power factor. Is anyone familiar with this or had the same expirience? These catrigages side by side with Winchester White Box 115 gr seem slightly smaller. Is that any indication of a possible lighter load?
  4. With only three matches in production and limited limited under my belt I don't claim to know much of anything about this sport, but what i do know is that when I hear that buzzer sound I am taken to state of mind that I have not expirienced while doing anything else. Growing up with a scoped rifle, 12 gauge, cheap pistol, or nintendo's "Duck Hunt" had not prepaired me for the enviorment that I've been drawn into. Prepairing for my first match I sent hundreds of rounds down range grewling over groups, grips, trigger control. My first stage was very much like my first deer hunt, a pound heart, shaking knees, and an obsessed effort to land my shot in the center of the target. Very calculated shooting. After the jitters and obsessions of that first stage were behind me the other side of my brain took over with no concious effort. Suddenly I would just raise my arms and it seemed like the targets came to me instead of me chasing them. I began to aquire them instinctively. ALL things in nature have instinct, SOME things in nature have the ability to calculate. A rock has the instinct to do nothing, a river has the instinct to flow, a tree has the instinct to grow and regenerate, and an animal has the instinct to breathe. It is our ability to calculate that often interfears with our natural ability to exist. The time spent over-analylising people and situations prevent us from reacting naturally to the stimuli. We, in effect, alter the natural flow of nature by trying to control it. We change who we are in an attempt to gain something small by minipulating the situations around us. As difficult as it is you must not care what others think of you and just live instinctivly. You must aquire and negosiate people and situations the way you do targets. Which is that you consciously and subconsiously understand the entire course of fire but when your sights align with an individual target you know that it is there and you just have to pull the trigger. This probibly makes no sense at all but it just came to me like that....Instinctivly.
  5. After 6 months of anticipation, research, and practice I finally got to shoot my first USPSA match this past Sunday in Eleanor, WV. I used a completly factory Sprinfield XDM 9mm in Production. I shot through production twice(for extra practice) and also shot limited to expiriment with a little more speed, and to take advantage of the 19+1 of the XDM. The information I recieved on this site was invaluable, especially the "first shoot" thread. The group assembled there was very welcoming and helpful which removed alot a anxiety right of the bat. I must admit though that upon hearing the beep at the beginning of my first stage my knees were shaking a bit. I felt that my accuracy was pretty good but my times were lacking. I'm sure that improves with expirience. I am attaching a link to the scores from production in the hopes that some of you more seasoned shooters can pick up on something that I can can use to help balance my shooting. Any insite would be greatly appreciated. I'm Matt Paxton. PCGC Production Scores 4/09
  6. I pick up the XDM 9mm SS/OD Green for production. $589 from Northwest Firearms. This will be my first year shooting IPSA and I did quite a bit of research. my brother shoots the XD tactical and side by side in practice we find that XDM is more accurate. I have pretty big hands but still use the small backstrap. I can really get a controlling grip with it. I've got about 500 rounds through mine now with no malfunctions. They are finally starting to make more upgrades for the XDM too. The only thing that I wish were a little better out of the box was the trigger. Before buying I had contimplated the M&P pro but went with the XDM. I got to shoot a guys M&P at the range and liked the stock trigger but that was the only thing that I found that I liked better on the S&W
  7. Full fledged Newbie here and I am extremely greatful for the info. My first match is coming up in April and I am collecting all of the pointers I can get. This site has been great. The guys at my club have been really helpful when I've been there to practice, but I seldom know the right questions to ask. One thing (IMHO) that would be a great addition to your post would be a point or two about sights: aquiring sight picture, tracking, etc. Like I said I'm real newbie with the bare essentials to shoot a match, and I've met a few like me "just starting out." We don't have reloading equipment or knowledge and are stuck with full power loads. After dropping quite a bit of cash on a competitive Production Division weapon, extra mags, holster, etc, this first year I won't have the cash to invest into a reloader that I won't be disappointed in later. One of the guys at range let me try some his loads and the difference is clear, but I would appreciate some input on how to overcome the recoil and sight aquasition.
  8. I picked up my ss/od XDM 9mm on Thursday and shot it for the first time today. Walmart had 100 rounds of WWB 115g. for $19.42. Best 20 bucks I've ever spent! I bought a package of 25 yard pistol targets(about 12" diameter)with 2" bulls eye. First of all I was surprised at how easy it was to load all 19 rounds into the mew mags, no loader needed. For practicing I used to 10 rounds per mag and shot a 15, 25, and 35 yards. My first mag at 15 yards produced about a 4" group in and high right of the bullseye. 25 yards was about 9" and 35...well lets just say 9 out of 10 were on the paper. Not bad for a gun right out of the box and a shooter who hasn't shot a handgun in over a year. Before I bought the XDM I did my homework and the only real compaint I heard was about the trigger. I'm no expert but I thought the trigger was great. Crisp, smooth, and lighter than any one I have owned. I tried double taps and rapid fire at 15 yards that were "on the paper".I plan to shoot production in ISPSA this spring, and have realized that at this point I'll be better off with 2 sight pictures per target. The stainless slide did get quite a bit of black residue around the muzzel, but it cleaned up easily with some Hoppe's.No malfunctions all day. All and all it was everything I had hoped for and more.
  9. Long story short the XDM is the way to go. Lots of extra gear and great groups at short to medium range. Alot of people are comfortable with the Glock but the XDM is the best.
  10. I just picked up my XDM today and plan to use it in production. As per some previous suggestions I'm starting some drills around the house, Draws, Double trigger Pulls and reloads. My question is: on a striker operated gun is it harmful to the gun/trigger to pull the trigger repeatedly WITHOUT it being cocked(i.e. spring wear or the like)
  11. great information all. this is all concise information that i havn't seen layed out so plainly.thanks& keep it coming!
  12. Uspsa caught my attention about two months ago and I can already tell i've got a problem. I learned so much just researching which gun to get, and now i knowthat I havn't even scratched the surface. On tuesday i orded an SA XDM 9mm Bi-Tone ss/od green and plan to get involved in production division. I heard some questionably remarks about the XDM trigger but besides that it seems competitve. I'm in West Virginia and my gun club in only in it's second year of uspsa. I thought I might not be too far behind but I saw a few of the local guys on you tube and they seem pretty intimidating. My XDM will be here saturday so I should have a few months to prepare before the first match. Anyone have an opinion on the best way to practice for someone who has never shot in a match, or any recommended upgrades for the XDM for production division? Anyone familiar with the Putnam County Gun Club in Eleanor, WV. I would appreciate any suggestions and anything I might have left out that will help an anxious noob!
  13. Thats a conicidence. I got interested in uspsa about 2months ago and just ordered my own xdm 9mm ss/od. I'm glad to see that i'm not the only one who likes the od.My xdm will be here here saturday so i'll have to give you a report to compare after i visit the range.i'm in West Virginia and my local gun club is only in it's second year of uspsa, i hope i can findsome expirienced people there to help.
