Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. At your local-level matches, what constitutes a "difficult" rifle shot? I'm looking for information on size of target and distance to target. Not the once-a-year difficult shot but something that occurs with some frequency, at least once a match, or once every-other match. I'm also interested in finding out if your competitors know the size and distance prior to shooting the stage or if they have to figure it out for themselves. If they know it, is it because they figure it out at walkthrough and discuss it among themselves or because it's part of the stage description?
  2. Something tells me you helped with making the empty Yeungling boxes...
  3. I'll first say that I shoot both USPSA and IDPA, but have been shooting IDPA much longer. Much of what you write below seems to simply be turning IDPA into USPSA, which I don't think is very productive. Games have rules, and those that don't like the rules of a game don't have to play them. I think golf should be timed, and I'd like to see a version that is full-contact. Since neither of those things are likely to happen, I don't play. People have to keep in mind that IDPA is a revenue stream for the Wilson clan. Making changes means people to make them and unless they can con volunteers into doing the work it means money out of pocket to get it done. This Tiger Team business seems to be an attempt at exactly that so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
  4. I'm glad to see this discussed here. I have been wondering if it actually mattered or not, or affected the outcome or not, that he was shooting the 300. A win is a win, from a marketing standpoint, but "won shooting 300 BLK making major AND it made the difference between first and second place" would be far more interesting. As it is it appears inconsequential that he was shooting the 300 BLK in terms of results.
  5. Reid and Andrew, good to meet you guys and good to shoot with you. Reid, I won't be out there this week, but I'll see you, and be chasing you, at some Thursday night matches soon. The one video I have from the knight/sword stage. Wishing now I had taken more as I think it really helps to evaluate performance.
  6. I've been running a tactical carbine match since Dec. 2004. What Bryan and Graham suggest is exactly right. We don't use shooting boxes as my match, but the idea is to simply have a limited range of possible shooting positions from which the targets can be engaged. Non-threat targets can help in this regard as well.
  7. Awesome match. Thanks to Shannon and all of the staff and ROs. And thanks to the SFPC Squad, Squad 18, for absorbing me and forgiving my early pasting of a target requiring one shooter to re-shoot Stage 3 one of FOUR TOTAL TIMES. Great time guys, and the Monster, last year and this, is at the top of my list for can't miss matches.
  8. South Florida Defensive Carbine Club (a Tropical Sport Shooting Association production) 2011 Announcement Beginning with the first match of 2011 on Tuesday, 25 January 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Markham Park Target Range, SFDCC will be open to all SAFE shooters! Until further notice the requirement of attending the Orientation and Qualification is hereby suspended. Along with this suspension of the O&Q is the suspension of all handgun use and SFDCC will be strictly a rifle/carbine event. For the sake of continuity and simplicity, even the wearing/carrying of a handgun at SFDCC is suspended. New Shooters, meaning anyone that has not participated in an SFDCC event before, will be expected to identify themselves at sign in and attend a New Shooter Briefing on the rules, safety procedures, expectations and requirements for participation in SFDCC. So pass the word, tell your buddy who just hasn’t ever been able to get to an O&Q, post to the forums, etc. and above all come out and shoot with us. Visit http://www.tssaidpa.us and click on “SFDCC” on the left side to get more information and to read our amended rules. There are other minor changes to the rules, to include the addition of separate scoring divisions for iron sights and optics. What this means This means that a wider range of shooters should be able to attend SFDCC events, increasing the number of competitors and increasing the level of competition! Rest assured that the SFDCC and TSSA staff will continue to uphold our high safety standards and that safely enjoying the shooting sports remains our top priority. It also means more bodies to help set up and tear down and paste targets and reset stages, which will mean more interesting, exciting, and complex stages. What this does NOT mean This does not, however, mean that SFDCC and TSSA staff are your baby-sitters. Just because the O&Q has been suspended does not mean that you should plan on bringing that one guy from work who always wanted to shoot a gun, or your wife’s cousin who is in town for the holidays and that you are stuck entertaining, or that SFDCC should become your kid’s first foray into firearms. We welcome ALL of these people at our events but it is still YOUR responsibility to get them to the range before hand and either evaluate their experience level or teach them what they need to know to safely compete with a real firearm in their hands. email rob AT tacticalyellowvisor DOT net for more information.
  9. Enjoyed the hell out of this match, and will definitely be back again next year.
  10. Got signed up and got squadded. Thanks Smitty for the email help. Looking forward to this one.
  11. yeah, I went a little nuts with the motor drive, so there's 300 images there with a lot that are virtually identical, but I figured better to put them out there.
  12. I am working on uploading pictures and video right now. Pictures are in-process to go up on photobucket, and videos will follow shortly (have to resize & watermark those one at a time, photos go in batch) Link to photo album
  13. I'm about to head out to drive up, about 2.5 hours, just to watch. Hoping that I don't miss everything arriving at 3. If anyone knows for sure that I'm going to waste a trip, shoot me an email at rob AT tacticalyellowvisor DOT net. If anyone is reading this that will be there, keep an eye out for the yellow visor and say hello (or throw rocks if that's your preference).
  14. I wear nomex flight gloves almost every time I shoot, and have had no issues related to glove use with the BAD prototype I got from Travis, the Phase V, or the production BAD.
  15. Tropical Sport Shooting Association will be holding a South Florida Defensive Carbine new shooter Orientation and Qualification on Tuesday 7 October 2008 at 6:30 PM (please try to be there earlier) at the Markham Park Target Range in Sunrise (western Broward County) Florida. Or better yet, sign up for the forum and post your RSVP here.
