  1. 3.4 of W231 under a 145gr. RN Bayou Bullet has been running about 128pf for me. Mine is running the .355 dia. bullets nicely. This load is very soft shooting and constantly gets me heckled by friends about being sub-minor, but has held up against chrono.
  2. I have a Glock magazine pistol caliber carbine that I would like to try carrying more rounds. Has anyone successfully added one of the 170mm magazine extensions to a 33 round 9mm magazine? Adding the base is easy enough, but I don't know of a spring that will be long enough. If anyone has any ideas I would be open to tinkering around.
  3. I am recently experiencing the same problem SeanC had on my 929 as well. I know I have at least 2000 clicks through it this year and probably another 1500 to 2000 from last year. I am working to resolve it and confident it will turn out well. In fact, thank you Sean for helping diagnose it. My question is, what causes the burr to develop at the bottom of the lead in ramp? I understand the cylinder stop slamming into the flat face of the notch causing the peening issue, but it seems like the stop should just ride along the ramp and fall into the notch. No real force in the direction that would cause a burr there. Does the cylinder stopping have enough force that it actually bounces off the flat face of the notch and hits against the face at the lead in ramp? Just curious as to what causes this, hoping to not do it again in the future.
  4. Years ago I always had trouble finding the dot when I tried any revolvers with a CMORE. When i finally set up a 929 for open I started with a Fast Fire III on a JPoint mount. I struggle with finding the dot again, it was always high in the window. Switched to a 6 MOA CMORE on an Allchin mount and love it. No trouble finding the dot, large enough for fast acquisitions but small enough for reasonable accuracy. Long range standards I set the dot on the dimmer side so I can look through the dot easier.
  5. Thank you Dean for organizing a fantastic match once again, and thank you to all of the staff for working hard to make the match run smoothly. To all those on squad 3, it was a pleasure to shoot with you and to meet some new people.
  6. Let me start by saying I am a revolver fan and shooting them almost exclusively the last year or so. I can see arguments for the 8 shots being allow, they are the same size as a 625, so it is no less concealable. However, 8 shots would not be terribly fun when you think about all of the rules involved. The only 8 shot that would be legal is the 627 (or 327). The 929 and 986 have too long of barrels and cutting them down is illegal. So 9mm 8 shot is out of the question. 8 shot minor with moon clips makes speed loaders obsolete. 8 shot major still has the advantage over 6 shot. Plus, full 155 PF from a 357 magnum over a big match makes for sore hands, worse than a 625. So you are down to only the 627's. Probably shooting major, but minor may work. Scoring would have to be more strict for the 8 shots (like USPSA). The way equipment and scoring works in IDPA just makes it too hard to include 8 shot revolvers. I would love to find a way to include them, but it is very difficult. I do disagree with minimum caliber being 38 special. I forget the model, but S&W made a 9mm 6 shot L frame that did not use moon clips. That should be legal for stock revolver. Really, if it makes power factor, why not allow the .32 calibers. Power factor is power factor and a hole in cardboard is a hole in cardboard, who cares how big it is?
  7. While neither are immune to issues, the 627 seems to have less. I have two 929's and am happy with both. Both had barrels clocked correctly, good crowns, good forcing cones, and standard factory triggers. Both of mine are throated correctly for 9mm, but I haven't slugged the barrels. My dad's is throated for .358 bullets though. Even on mine, there is a difference on the diameter of several throats. Biggest thing to me is being able to have one in your hands and inspect it before purchasing. Some are good, some still have issues.
  8. Talking just the steak itself, I personally go for a medium cooked rib-eye. As for restaurants, Outback gets my vote for a chain restaurant. The best steak I've had bar-none was at Greg Normans Grill in Myrtle Beach.
  9. Another vote for the DAA. I started with the Racer and won a Race Master. No real difference in feel, the Race Master just lets you use inserts if you want to use it for more than one gun. Only benefit to the Race Master is you can add the muzzle support, which the Racer doesn't allow for. I started with the Safariland 002 and always felt like my 610 was going to fall out. Haven't looked back since switching to the DAA.
  10. I am looking for a scope for my 300 Blk, and want to keep it reasonably lower cost. Between these 2 is a $50 difference usually. I am looking at either 2-7 or 3-9 power for some hunting use and maybe local 3 gun for something different. Shots will not be much beyond 100 yards. How is the quality of both these scopes and how do they compare to each other. My more serious hunting rifles all wear Leupold VXII's so that is my main comparison. But this won't see they same use or expectations either.
  11. Thanks for the information guys. I am going to scrap these pieces to be safe. I have a new die showing up in a couple days. Still not sure what happened but there are definite scratches in the die that seem deeper than caused by dirt.
  12. I started resizing some 7mm Rem Mag brass last night and was about 20 pieces in when I noticed the cases are badly scratched all the way around. Not sure what happened but the inside of my sizing die shows the same scratches, so at least I know it is coming from the die. These scratches are deep enough you feel them if you drag a finger nail across them, would you still use this brass or replace it?
  13. Like with all coated and bare lead bullets, a lot of the difference in amount of smoke comes from the powder choice. Something like Titegroup that burns hot will create more smoke. In my steel open gun I get some smoke, but minimal with AA #5. No build up on my CMORE either.
  14. This is how I grip and it works for me. I don't try to use the finger hook to pull the gun down, just simply rest it in front of the trigger guard. I'm not sure when or where I started it, I think it comes from starting on revolvers with no where to hang the off hand pinky. I do it the same every time, so if I am pulling it sideways, I do it every time and sights are adjusted for it. I can pick up most other peoples guns with this grip though and hit the same. So I think in my case it is more of a finger rest than a gripping point.
  15. I am building a new rifle and decided to see how the headspace was before putting everything together and am not sure how to interpret my results. I did not purchase any of the Go-No Go gauges. I have some resized and trimmed brass that I checked in a Lyman Case gauge and everything is correct. I put the case in the chamber and try to close the bolt, but it is tough going. I have the bolt out of the carrier and need decent force and a screwdriver through the cam pin hole to turn the bolt, but it does close. When I take the case out there is a visible ring where the case is seating against the chamber. None of my other guns leave a ring when unload an unfired round, so this seems a little tight. Does it sound like I have a headspace problem, or should I just go back and adjust my sizing die until I no longer get the ring when chamber checking?
  16. I don't know most of the rules for limited, but why not add extended base pads. I thought limited is still okay with 140mm magazines. I believe you can get up to 18 or 19 rounds with extended base pads. Medium courses you may suffer but will be fine on short courses and maybe 1 extra reload on a field course, which you can usually plan for and not lose any time.
  17. Please add East Coast Regional Steel Challenge Championship 9/23-9/25 Guthsville Rod and Gun Club Orefield, Pa http://eastcoaststeelchampionship.com
  18. The biggest thing I found for my 9mm AR with a compensator is to make sure you are using the right powder. I ran some with 231, AA #5, and WST. The AA#5 being the slowest powder definitely moved the dot less. Nothing that will save or kill a match, but the stainless compensator still looks way cooler than a birdcage flash hider.
  19. I have the .035 Hearthco (not TK) and they work well with Win brass, some are pretty tight though and will not spin. The FC brass is very hit and miss with these moon clips. Some are perfect, some are tight and will not spin and others are so loose they fall out of the moon clip. Since I have a vast majority of the FC brass I am going to try the .040 Revolver Supply and see how I like them. I have started using some of the DAA magnetic moon clip holders and find that the blued steel stick very tight. During reloads it is noticeable but manageable, but the stainless definitely are easier to work with. The magnets are strong enough that the stainless sticks and the moon clips do not go flying off while running, but come off with moderate force for a reload.
  20. I use the Black Scorpion for USPSA and 3-Gun. Lot's of adjustments and can really lock down the magazines if needed. Even when set tight the magazines seem to come out really smoothly.
  21. USPSA metric target at 100 yards with my 9mm M&P shooting minor loads standing offhand, 5 out of 7 shots were in C zone. There was nothing resembling a group, but at least they hit. I was practicing rifle on a covered rifle line when it started to down pour. Was out of rifle ammo and only had 7 rounds on 9mm left from earlier pistol practice. I didn't feel like getting wet, so I decided to goof around and lob a few shots out to see what I could hit. Apparently more than I expected to. I had no idea what hold over I needed or anything. I would have been happy with a single hit.
  22. I love Trailboss for soft loads. It actually makes a higher power factor than you would expect with how soft it shoots. Works great for soft loads for Steel Challenge as well.
  23. I don't think you'll see a huge change in placements. Some of the guys that are very fast but sloppy will drop a couple places but not many. You don't stay at the top long by being sloppy. I shoot as much ICORE as I can and that is the scoring this would be closest to. It requires more self-knowledge, but not necessarily slower. 10 yards and under (a lot of IDPA targets) and I don't let off gas at all. 15 yards, dial it back some but I do that in IDPA already. Beyond that if you are spraying bullets today, you are probably not hitting all zeros and if you are at full speed you are winning divisions already. If you hit -1 and -3 today, you'll still hit them tomorrow under the new rule. The people in your class that hit them today are still going to hit them tomorrow. If someone beats you today by 1 second and under the new rules they beat you by 3 seconds does it change the fact that they shot better and won either way?
  24. A little late to the party, but I am a big fan of the Lancer Nitrous. Comes with different size jets for the top ports to tune it easily. Very flat and soft shooting with this comp though a little loud and worse for the RO.
  25. A few pictures will help a lot. Something doesn't sound right. The mainspring should not be close enough to the rebound slide to prevent it from moving. I've only used the Miculek and the Wolff spring kits, so I don't know what the Wilson Combat one looks like.
