Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have a friend who bought a 9mm Taurus. In spite of a new barrel bushing the accuracy was bad. I mean it wouldn't stay on paper at 25 yards. He couldn't sell it fast enough.
  2. The next round would have bulged or split the barrel. Please don't ask me how I know this. There is a raging debate on the 1911 pro forum about how this can happen. There are plenty of experts that say a bullet must exit the muzzle to actuate the short recoil 1911 design. I have seen this disproved on 2 separate occasions so I know it can happen. The real question, yet to be resolved, is how.
  3. No experience with STI other than I have their slides on two custom 1911's. I did handle two different Springfield RO's and if I was on a budget I would pick that in a heartbeat. Good out of the box and accepts modifications easily. The new Ruger has been reviewed by Joe Chambers, a top Smith, and he proclaimed it excellent in that price range although very hard to find. I also shot the new Remington and wouldn't have one if it were free.
  4. 1911's need pre-travel to work properly. If you tightened the over-travel spring too much that could also be a factor. Make sure that you polished the legs of the sear spring where it contacts the sear and disconnecter. In other words polish everything that touches when the trigger is activated EXCEPT the sear and hammer engagement. That is best left to the pros. Google "Blind Hog" for valuable clues to your problems.
  5. You are missing the point. There are many in the Bullseye game that demand that kind of precision. The "X" ring at 50 yards isn't very large. even with a perfect hold a gun not able to group as I described can easily be the difference in winning and losing a match. There is enough human error, you don't want that compounded by inadequate equipment. In other words even with a perfect hold a .45 That can only group at 3" will easily lose you the x ring and perhaps the ten ring. BTW the diameter of the X ring on a 50 yard target 1.7 inches and the 10 ring 3.3. You do the math. In many matches ties are broken by how many shots hit the X ring.
  6. If you are shooting the Bullseye game a 1911 with a 1 1/2" or less at 50 yard guarantee, coming from a well know smith who specializes in that type of gun you are looking at the 4 to $5000 piece. Keefer, Clark, Chambers, guys like that charge those kind of numbers.
  7. I have two 1911's. One is hard chrome the other Ionbond. I have acidic sweat. The chrome gun has rusted in spots (the front and back strap which are checkered) although I can get it off, the Ionbond has not. I prefer the look of the Ionbond gun as well. Just one data point.
  8. Ouch! I have a Gold Cup barrel with a nice bulge (no split)that was caused by a squib followed by a regular load. Experts tell me this can't happen to a 1911 but it did, during a rapid fire string at a Bullseye match.
  9. That has got to be a metallurgical flaw. I can't imagine even a double charge doing all that damage. Very glad you are OK. I am very interested in seeing what the manufacturer of both the gun and the ammo have to say.
  10. You probably don't have to worry about the military stuff. I've loaded thousands and never had to swage the pockets because they weren't held in any differently than commercial brass. It's also usually very uniform brass.
  11. You could try the tried and true load of Bullseye. About 3.5 to 4.0 grains should be very accurate. Or 3.8 of Clays for about the same velocity but slightly cleaner.
  12. I have shot thousands of rounds with a slide mounted red dot. No problems what so ever. I use a tube type, an UltraDot, and it has a lifetime warranty. Many of the people I shoot with seem to have no problems with slide mounts and recommended the UltraDot for that reason.
  13. Nope the damage is right on the top, next to the central aiming slot. Peaches is in big trouble. I hate to buy a whole new sight just to replace what I know is replaceable. Besides it's a high body Bomar so the low profile replacements won't work with my front sight. Yes owned and raced a 1989 944Turbo-S for many years in Porsche Club Racing events. Have fun with yours.
  14. I have a wad gun by Ross carter. While cleaning my cat knocked it off my workbench and damaged the blade on the Bomar rear sight. I am desperately trying to find a replacement blade with no luck. My cat's life hangs in the balance. Can someone help me? I've tried all the usual suspects including speaking to a really nasty women at Bomar. Peaches the cat and I would really appreciate some help. Thanks, Jerry
  15. I think you'll find that most of the top shooters use light full to full. Most people, including myself, that have a fixed choke gun find that it's choked at .032 to .034. You really can use that choke from 16 to 27 yards. If you're in the center it will crush targets at any of those distances, if you're not it really doesn't matter because with any choke a marginal hit is a marginal hit or a miss. It's also a tremendous confidence booster when you smoke a target. Nothing like positive feedback. When I first got into trap shooting many moons ago I obsessed over the choke. Now I have a fixed choke gun and don't even think about it. Not to brag but you can go 25/25 with a cylinder choke in a 16" riot gun. I've done it. Did I smoke any? No, but they all broke. More important than choke is gun fit but that's another topic. Jerry
