Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. The 40 S&W LFCD ring in it's base is designed to pass a .400" diameter copper jacketed bullet and 2X the thickness of the brass. A .401" lead bullet will get swaged to .400" That could be a problem with soft lead because you have just lost .001" of lead to grab the rifling However, if you cast them real hard like SARCO 10 or more, you won't notice the lost .001" diameter
  2. KKM and LW chambers are tighter than my cartridge guage. If you cast your 180gr 40cal bullets hard enough, like a BHN of 18, you can get by with using a LFCD on them without a lot of leading problems, that helps a lot with tight chamber barrels. I always plunk check my match ammo in the barrel I will shoot the match with. Because of the fully supported barrel you will be smasing the rounds into the top of the chamber and you'll probably (maybe) have at least one failure to feed. I seat my 40cal Lyman 175s to a Cartridge Over All Length of 1.1" I don't know how short you can seat the bear creek 180s but I wouldn't go to 1.1 with them.
  3. It depends on what you are shooting in your G35 and how you have your G35 set up. Here's my G35 limited gun with a LW barrel and sights I forgot that name of. 180gr FMJ from Everglades, 5.4 unique, Rem 1 1/2. 25 yards, standing, weaver stance. It's a great shooter.
  4. I have a therapy list that I do at home but I'm still struggling with the gun. You are right about the stress on the shoulder, I forgot all about the mechanical advantage of arm's length. I may end up waiting until June or July to shoot.
  5. I did have but I finished physical therapy 3 weeks ago. When I talked to her (my therapist) about shooting she would change the subject.
  6. I had Rotator Cuff and Bicep Tendon surgery on my right shoulder Dec 8th. The Dr said I should limit my right arm lifting to 5 - 10 lb until June. I'm figuring 5lbs is well within the weight of a Glock 17 and I've got a real hankerin' to get back into USPSA and IDPA. The problem is that it appears my shoulder muscles have really been moved around and I'm really weak when I get the gun up to eye level with my right arm. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to get back on track? Does anyone have any no-weight exercise suggestions that would strengthen the muscle set I'm using when I move up to eye level? Right now the only thing I can think of doing is just to practice drawing, dry firing and what I call "shadow boxing" with the gun but it's slow going. I've set a goal to be back in IDPA and USPSA by March.
  7. I used a Lee TL452-230-TC six banger microband tumble lube mold for about 2-3 years. I had to lap one of the chambers because it was a putting out .451 bullets, once I did that it put out great bullets. I'd still be using it except that I wore it out and I got tired of the lube mess. I guess I'm just anal. I'm using a two hole RCBS 225 gr mold right now with an upgraded Lyman 450 luber/sizer I'm struggling to keep up with my shooting with this setup.
  8. Thanks for the info guys.. I Dremel'ed them flat inside.. sanded with 600 grit.. used Brownells bluing on the inside...Works great..
  9. Looking for advice on taking the dimples out of an 1100 magazine so I can add a magazine extension. My thoughts are that "pressing" them out or "Ironing" them out with vice grips would be better than "dremel" or "Filing". Any ideas? Has anyone else done it? Any websites on 1100 mods for 3 gun?
  10. I’ve been working with my M1 Garands for a long time.. In anticipation of our shooting club having a “He Man” 3 gun match. The fastest way to access loaded clips... for me anyway.. has been to use my old skeet shooting “empty shotgun shell” pouch to hold clips on my right hip... The pouch stays wide open so I have easy access to the clips.. and they are always in the same place.. BUT.. you have to be careful moving, and if the COF has a prone you could dump the whole bag... Bandoleers seem to be the 2nd fastest way. The old WWII ammo belt works ok but you have to shift the belt around to get what you want.. I’m trying to get in the habit of leaving the gun on my right shoulder pointed slightly down and to the left, grabbing a clip and slapping it in..It’s hard to do but it seems to be faster for target re-acquisition than dropping the butt for a reload... If you work on this you can get to the point where you can “Almost” keep up a steady stream of fire.. but it’s still no AR15 when it comes to pumping them out.. dealing with the 30-06 recoil to get back to the target is the hard part... Oh, and BTW.. Painting the front sight florescent orange helps a lot on these old battle rifles...
  11. I'm burning 8,000+ rounds of 45acp in IPSC/USPSA, 3 gun and IDPA practice and matches a year.. Not a big deal until I retired on half my salary,, So,, now I'm casting my own bullets.. It's just another hobby... It's fun.. I can cast and lube 1000 rounds of 225 or 230 gr RN 45 acp for less than $15/1000.. and that includes equipment depreciation.. The secret is to get your lead as cheap as you can and only buy used equipment on EBAY.. But.. you have to be retired to do it... It's not a hobby for people who don't have the time to enjoy it.. Just like reloading..
  12. I'm feeding 2 Garands with my RL550.. works great.. I recommend pre-processing the brass in a separate step.. you can still use the 550 for that.. first sort the 30-06 brass for max length of 2.494", any over length get trimmed to the "Trim To Length" of 2.485". I size with Imperial Sizing wax, wipe the wax off with a paper towel.. this stuff is easy to take off.. then I remove any primer crimp and clean the primer pocket. Then I check the headspace in my Wilson Cartridge Gauge.. Once that's done I put the brass in a box marked "Ready to Load".. When I get 200 or 300 rounds processed I run them through the RL550.. that part goes real fast.. I use a Lee Factory Crimp in the Final Stage.. that gives me a lot of leeway in case length.. Oh.. and.. I'm mostly using pulled IMR4895 .. I tap the powder assembly on the up and down stroke on my dillion.. just a habit I got into when I had a single stage press and a lyman powder measure.. it had a tapper on it.. anyway.. I think this is one of the reasons why I've never had any metering problems with 4895 in the 550. I'm mostly using pulled 150/152 grain bullets from gibrass...
  13. I'm going to "Try" an AK instead of my Bushmaster at our next 3 gun. Mag change will be slower, but it wil be fun..
  14. Sniff... I guess I'll be shooting limited then... sniff... And limited minor at that... Oh the humanity... At least I got an AK that rocks out of the deal..
  15. I agree.. They should adopt a a shotgun calibration technique that uses this wally world stuff as a baseline for knocking steel down, or better yet make it 1oz/3 dram.. there are a lot of dove loads like that and I've seen a lot of people at matches with these 1oz loads
