  1. This score is more than 5% below the minimum score for your current class and cannot be used. Please note that you may have scores from your initial classification that are lower than more recent scores that are flagged B. This is because all scores regardless of percentage are used to determine your initial classification; however, after you have earned your initial classification only scores that are at higher than 5% below the minimum score for your class can be used.

It seems that the only time a score gets flagged with a "B" is if you are already classified and you get a score more than 5% below your classification.

If a score is ever used for your classification it seems to never get flagged as a "B" but rather might get downgraded to a "F" and still count to push your 94 to an "E".

  2. Sarge is just upset cuz he ain't got no friends to stay with!

Me? I grab the BE map and start driving in ever widening circles until I find one of you guys that will let me sleep on the couch (preferably inside).

Sometimes I do *a lot* of circles.

  3. As far as I can tell from some other problem I had, it is not possible to over-insert a magazine in a full size (or Pro) M&P.

It is very easy to over-insert a full size mag into a compact or an extended mag into a Shield if you take off the mag spacer. When you (I) do that it bends the crap out of the ejector.

I did find that using TF mag extensions on an M&P 40 allowed the mag to be inserted just slightly higher, not enough to bend or damage anything, but it would occasionally seem to "lock" back when (during cycling) the mag would bounce farther into the mag well than one with a stock basepad and the top round would hold the slide back. The slide release wouldn't be locked back so that did nothing, had to pull and release the slide from the rear.

I base my assertion that you can't over-insert a mag into a full size M&P based on trying to do that both with the top end on and off the gun. If I held the grip and pressed down firmly on the TF extended mag while racking the slide, it would get stuck back. Sometimes in a match I would go 20 rounds without it happening, sometimes it would happen 10 times in a row.

I tried the same thing with the extensions on 9mm mags and it never happens when using 9.

  4. It should not be submitted as an official classifier score if it was setup incorrectly.

It could still be used as a valid stage in the match as long as everyone shot it the same way but they should not submit it as an official classifier score.

The RO shouldn't change that without approval from the RM. I would hope that the RM would know enough to fix it or not submit it as a classifier. If they did fix it, anyone that had shot it previously would need to reshoot it once correctly setup.

  5. On a related note...has anyone ever found looking at the back of the target useful, and if so, how?

The only time I look at the back of the target is for scoring IDPA shoot-throughs.

Based on some of your scores, I'd say you havent found looking at the front of the targets useful either! :-) hey-ohhh!!

    OUCH!! That's a 1-Alpha the hard way!

  6. With me only having 6 scores, of which 4 are being used for my classification, if I go shoot tomorrow and tank the classifier, will that be used once I get 8?

I guess my question is when does the less than 5% or more than 15% under/over rule for not using that classifier come into effect? After I have 4 valid scores? After I have 6-8 valid scores? I put a lot of pressure on myself to get initially classified and I really just want to relax now, but until I figure out if I can screw myself or not that will be hard.

If you look at your classifiers you can see that a similar situation already happened on 2/27/16. You got your initial C classification after your first 4 and then your fifth was less than 35 so it was not counted.

  7. I can think of two more....

9.1.6.1 If a bullet strikes wholly within hard cover, and continues on to strike any scoring paper target or no-shoot, that shot will not count for score or penalty, as the case may be.

9.5.8 Hits visible on a scoring paper target or no-shoot, which are the result of shots fired through the rear of the target or no-shoot, will not count for score or penalty, as the case may be.

  8. Because of the subjective way that rules are designed and enforced in IDPA, I don't shoot it to compete (though that is difficult for any competitive person). I shoot IDPA to practice with what I carry and how I carry it.

I have run several IDPA matches (and USPSA and 3-gun) matches over the years and I try to make IDPA matches a learning experience...to present shooters with challenges they don't get to practice usually or maybe haven't thought of. We do things like shooting in the dark while retrieving and carrying a dummy. Yes, we don't follow strict IDPA rules but rather allow people to use what they actually carry, including weapon mounted lights and lasers. Following the excellent example set by GADPA we also allow people who want to shoot their USPSA rigs the ability to do so in a separate division (though still enforcing 10 round mags, use of cover, etc). We also allow Pistol Caliber Carbine because some people may want to try a match with what they keep by the bed or in the closet. Once we get enough steel we'll probably have a defensive shotgun match or two.

Because of the more clearly define rules I consider USPSA to be a much better form of true competition where people's performance can be more accurately compared. I still enjoy the defensive matches but maybe that is because I look at them in a different way and don't get wound up over whether or not someone is being accurately judged by Bubba SO according to the vague rules of gunfighting according to Bill Wilson.

As far as appendix carry, this is part of what I tell people in my now way too long and boring safety briefing...

I won't pretend to tell you how to carry and handle your gun at home and on the street. What I will tell you is what is acceptable gun handling within this match and that includes things like observing the 180, having an acceptable holster in the right position, etc. At home, if I was going from room to room I would likely be leading with the gun pointed in whatever direction I am moving. Here, no matter whether moving uprange, downrange, or sideways, that gun needs to remain pointed downrange as much as possible.

  9. Interesting that the vest has developed such an unpopular nickname. Has anyone ever seen a news article or broadcast of a person wearing a vest for concealment being shot?

I would be surprised if common criminals would even recognize an IDPA vest as such.

  10. My vest was purchased specifically for IDPA competition. I never wear the vest unless dry firing, or I'm on the line. I got it for $25 on Amazon.

I guess I just want to fit in at the Khaki vest convention. Honestly, IMO, the rule is useless, it does nothing to simulate "real world" concealment.

I think the rule is perfectly valid! What is not is that people "game" it by wearing vests that they do not wear otherwise.

For those that actually wear the vest in public I think it is good for them to practice and compete with it. Personally, I shoot with my normal, everyday clothes that include a shirt long enough to conceal. That results in lots of good practice drawing from exactly how I carry everyday.

  11. For me it would be determined by how he did it. If he had really lost it and threw it in a fit of uncontrolled (or improperly controlled) rage, then yes, I think it merits a DQ. I don't want people who can't handle some misfortune without losing it. What is going to happen on the next stage when Bubba in the crowd unexpectedly burps right before the start signal? Does he warrant a two-alpha?

OTOH, if it was done in a joking manner, I have no problem with that. I would think it was kind of funny if someone took the mag out of their gun and tossed it back into a trash barrel.

  12. I went back and looked. In the new rule book available here: http://www.idpa.com/compete/rules

    ...it has:

    8.1.2 Magazine Loading
8.1.2.1 All magazines must be loaded to division capacity at the start signal throughout the match except in the following cases:
8.1.2.2 If a magazine is used that holds less than division capacity, the shooter will load all magazines to the capacity of the lowest magazine throughout the match.
8.1.2.3 The CoF description may require reduced magazine loading.
8.1.2.4 In the Revolver division the shooter must load the revolver and all loading devices with the same number of rounds throughout the match unless the above loading exceptions apply.
  13. As I recall, in CDP you can use either 7 or 8 round mags but whatever you use for the first mag, you have to use that same amount for the rest of the match. Unless otherwise specified all magazines have to have division capacity...you can't download to game a slide lock reload. You now, may, however, dump rounds to empty the mag (unless it is a limited vickers stage). :)

  14. Could the magazines be over inserting? What prevents a magazine from over inserting on this gun?

The base plate is what keeps a mag from over-inserting. I made the mistake of running extended mags in my Shield without the slide on extensions. When I did a slide lock reload I over inserted the mag and bent the ejector.

I have a problem that only occurs with TT extended basepads in my M&P 40s. They allow the mag to insert a little farther and while firing they will occasionally bounce up and the slide will effectively lock back when the top round binds against the slide. It does not happen when those same basepads are used on my M&P 9s. I verified this by putting a full mag in and pressing down on the bench to simulate it bouncing all the way up during firing. It would hold the slide back in 40 but not 9. It was not consistent but on some stages would happen 10 out of 15 times and sometimes none out of 15, but it was sure annoying when my M&P went into single shot mode.

Here are pictures of a California 10 round mag inserted as far as it will go (stopped by the base pad) and a normal mag tube with the base pad removed:
