  1. It's only as rough as the blasting media used in the steel. I did the slide stop and beaver tail and they are smooth. The slide needed "forced" on to the frame, but a couple racks by hand loosened it right back to the original fit. So far this is a really tough finish better than any spray on I've seen. Hard to believe it was so easy and $45 in material, and has many many more uses down the road. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Thanks! Gary made the comp per my design. I may cut the last bleeder off and just use the 4 up ports. It works a little too well.
  3. GANS shorty 9 major! I did the DIY parkerizing using LCW solution. Way easier than I thought, and love the stealth bomber look. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I purchased it January of 2012 from Shooters Connection. I don't know when the original run was. As far as I know after talking with STI, the rails are the same now as on my gun, clamp on only. Chuck sells the D1 with both barrels as well. Not sure if I like the new style. I'm thinking about picking up a 4" Duty1 and a 4" 2011 tactical before Christmas. Then Rhianna can get her Match Master for open next year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Love it. The RM broke within a thousand rounds but no other problems. The only thing I didn't like is that the rail only accepts clamp on style lights like the stream light TLR and not slide on like Insight. The gun runs great with all OAL ammo and Tripp or Wilson mags. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. I shot a Duty 1 at the 2012 SS Nationals and 3 other major matches. Make sure you get the bushing barrel because they sell them with both. I added a weld on mag well, tungsten rod and thumbshield, and come in at 42.1oz with a Tripp mag. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. I've seen some guys use "slim" 1911 grips on Caspians HC's. I'm not sure if they had to modify them to fit though.
  8. I'm glad I found this thread! Is it pretty easy to get a tour? I'm flying to TX in May and thought about making a visit to SV. I'll have to see if I can talk Roy into giving me his secret password to get to play with all of the classified toys they have And as for Mr. Neal, I agree he is one hell of a salesman and I truly beleive he could sell reading glasses to a blind person...but it took him 13 years to convert me to a blue shirt. I thought that was a personal victory, but I know when that Sight Tracker shows up (sonn I hope) I'm gonna kick myself in the ass for not doing it sooner!
  9. Awesome match guys! Big thanks to the staff and RO's for a great time. It was well worth the 7 hour drive and it will most likely be on the 2012 match schedule. Corey, thanks and I hope to get to meet you next time. Can't wait to see your video from this one. I may run with your idea and try for a "Battle in the Burgh" SS/PRD match. It's a long shot, but it may happen. Now I just need to buy a S/S.... Thanks again, and if any of you guys head east, hit me up. Trout
  10. I put the aluminum grip on my LTD gun and have shot it all season with no cracks. I didn't need to fit anything to get it on my frame though. I had to sand it a little to get the mag well on it. I do, however, wish they would make a steel version...I'm a weight junkie....
  11. Put the SPOT you are aiming at in the center of the front sight blade, and be as consistent as possible. That is true if your FS is 0.090 or 0.200 wide. -rvb The most accurate I've been when shooting at 25 yds + is to use a 6 'o clock hold on the bullseye so the entire circle is sitting on the front sight. I use a .090 and .100 dawson. I don't remember the last time I actually measured a group at that distance, but I can keep them all in the upper A/B at 25-35 yds freestyle, so less than 4".
  12. If you don't want to build a tester, you can use a bathroom scale (or any scale in the weight range you're measuring) to get you by. I've done it with new springs and it was actually pretty accurate. You need a full length guiderod and a spring plug. Put the head of the guiderod on the center of the scale and use the reverse plug/spring plug to compress the spring just until the plug touches the guiderod head (full cycle compression) and note the weight. It takes a few tries to get the feel of when you make contact at full compression, but I've been within 1 lb of known weight every time. It's not uber scientific but it's good to sort heavy/light springs when they get mixed up.
  13. Has anyone tried the Caspian grip tape from Brownells? I know that Caspian is a little slimmer than the STI so I would think that it would fit the S grip, but I'm not sure about the B grip.
  14. Well your splits and transitions are really slow. Your movements really need work, are you picking up your feet or just dragging them on the ground? I couldn't tell. Not sure what your doing with the sissy open gun in your hand. Did Rhinna let you borrow hers?? All in all with some work you might be able to make to C class someday Oh......reread your post...you meant suggestions for a camera........LOL. Nice vids Matt, sharp as ever. It was good to see you at WPA. Sorry no suggestions on a camera......so this was a worthless post except for the ribbing Flyin Thanks buddy I'm surprised Rhianna didn't tell you......when the gun is working good it's hers. If something breaks, it's mine. The thumb safety broke on her at EH's match, so it's mine :-) I just didn't tell her I fixed it. It was good to see you too. I should see you in a few weeks, if all goes right.
  15. My Youtube page http://www.youtube.com/user/MDTShooting My camera really stinks. I hope to have a new HD camera soon. Any suggestions?
  16. I can, will and do. It's silly not to...unless the data is suspect. The RO on the timer can certainly miss the shooter doing a reload. I've been there when the CRO's at the Nationals have missed them. As a matter of fact, with this shooter: That is why we have an RO on the timer and an RO on the clip-board (or wherever). The two need to position themselves, throughout the cof, so that...at least...one of them has the angle to see what needs to be seen. I've worked many matches. I don't instruct one RO to watch the feet and one to watch the gun, at least not in any exclusive or overly specific manner. I do instruct them to position themselves (and move) in a manner that covers the angles. When you have a good CRO (like a Brian Hanna or Paul Hernandez) on a stage...watch where they plant themselves. See where they position their timer RO and their clip board RO. Watch a stage I'm running when a left handed shooter steps up. You will see all the RO's completely shift their positions (kind of funny watching the little dance that unfolds). As to the call here...when two RO's can't agree on a call, it's time to bring in the CRO > Range Master. If the Range Master cannot make an accurate determination...then you are looking at a reshoot. But, we never give out penalties on a "think so". Nice link you posted there Kyle....that's one "sexy monkey" (if you don't know, don't ask) I had a reshoot at a major match because of a similar situation. It was a field course and the first 4 or 5 targets were withn 5 to 6 feet of the shooting area. When the RO was scoring he called 2 mikes and an FTE on the second or third target. He looked at me and said "there is no way you could have missed that target". The scorekeeper said that I never shot at it. Now we had it on video and the squad looked at it while the Rangemaster was called and I clearly shot the target. It turns out the target was pasted before it was scored but no one would confess to it until after the match. However, here is the important part...The Rangemaster asked the scorekeeper if he WAS SURE if I engaged the target or not. The scorekeeper hesitated and then said I'm pretty sure he didn't engage it. The Rangemaster's words were..." I can tell by the hesitiation and you're answer that you are not sure, reshoot the stage. It turns out that was the right call to make. In the end we need to RO a stage just like we shoot it. Pay attention to every little detail and call the shooter's moves just like we call our own shots. It either IS or ISN'T.....but you have to be sure. And hey Rodgers......you need to increase my consultant fee a little to comply with your request
  17. The match went great! It was a pleasure to both work the match and shoot it. They really know how to present a shooting challenge, even with the small shooting bays that they have. What could have been an all out trigger speed blaze fest was actually a well balanced skills test. They used just enough hard cover, no-shoots, and hard shooting positions to force accuracy and movement skills. Even the speed shoots were high round count stages that balanced out the match. No silly props or non-shooting goofy crap. Just good, challenging shooting. A huge thanks to McDonald Sportsmans club and crew for a hell of a job, to the RO's and staff that volunteered their time, and to everyone that came out to have a good time with us in the WPA Section. It's always a pleasure to work a well oiled match like this one. I should have some vids uploaded soon....
  18. Awww, we feel for you Larry. How dare they make an old fart like you THINK about your shooting........ And you wanted to be in charge of my bachelor party! Geesh. We have a house now, you can hang here and we can do some strategic planning of stages....you, me, and General Cabo Wabo. Hell, I'll even shoot SSD with you
  19. Yeah, I had the 40 barrel in for the match. I carry it in 10 and I'll shoot 10's at a local action shoot that only has one stage. Otherwise, I practice with it and shoot USPSA with the 40 barrel. I want to shoot more SSD in the future and I'm so sold on the DW Bobtail, I may buy the 5" 10mm, drop a 40 barrel in it and go rip on it. And I'm with you on the 10 thing......a 1911 in that caliber is hard to beat for personal protection!
  20. I have a DW Commander Bobtail in 10mm as my everyday carry gun. I think I paid $929 for it a year ago and it has been the best money I've spent on a gun. The slide was scarry tight (considering it's stainless) and the barrel lock up was unreal. It had that nice little "hitch" like most custom guns have when they're built. I think it was a real bargain considering the front strap checkering, night sights, bobtail, and all of the Ed Brown components that are in it. I've put 200 rounds of CorBon DPX through it without a problem. The gun didn't seem to like the Double Tap ammo, but considering the other problems I've found with that ammo I don't hold that against it. I also bought a Storm Lake drop in 40 barrel to practice with. With that barrel in the gun, it will outshoot any gun I own off of a rest. If I had to rate the gun, I would give a 9 out of 10. I had two complaints that I emailed DW about. One is that the 10mm should have a fully ramped barrel instead of the unramped barrel, and two, front serrations would have been nice but not a big deal. If the 10 came with a ramped barrel I'd give it a 10. Here's a video of me shooting it at a club match. You'll notice a mag hiccup on one stage. Those were well abused, really old 10mm mags I got for free. The gun has never given me a problem with the factory mags or the 9 rounder I bought new, all Chip McCormick. VIDEO
  21. Yup, I'll be there. I've shot two matches since the surgery and it's pretty good. A little sore, but good. Do you want to shoot together? Let me know what day you're shooting.
  22. Nice vids John, thanks for posting!
  23. Hmmm, if only you had a turbo powered cart to get back and forth...... Kyle can bring the cart, I'll bring the boost, and we can hook you guys up for next year! Without a doubt, you guys had the toughest stage of the match to RO. I heard Bill was pretty busy on that stage for a while. You all deserve a big pat on the back for keeping things running well.
