  1. Weak and Strong hand should be incorporated into every practice, even if it is just one mag each. Taran Butler has some tips on shooting weak hand etc. in the Front Sight mag.

I had to spend a lot of time with .22 just to get the feel down right. Now the weak hand strong hand stuff is something I look forward to in a match.

In talking with Matt B. he mentioned that doing all the hard stuff in practice improves your confidence when you get to a match that weak/strong stuff is essentially not even a consideration on determining how to shoot the stage.

  2. L10 is not Single Stack! You all know that wide bodies, Glocks, Paras etc can be u sed in L10. Only SS for SSD. There is nothing wrong with this. I dislike the carping about too many divisions etc. There are just too many good reasons to have the SSD.

A good 16 round stage is hard to find much less a 32 round stage. Now I have limited experience but in two nationals, a couple of Area matches and a slew of other matches I have seen adherence to the 9 rounds for one shooting area migrate to 16 rounds. Good stages are diffucult but that is ok by me. I just enjoy shootin em.

  3. Stage 1 was a trip. That first swinger as fast and with such a small window of opportunity to shoot it. My timing was so off, I got a 'A' zione hit on the berm in trying to anticipate it.

Keith is a great shooter, I shot another match with him. He is very good when both feet are working. He would move out of C class but he only shoots SS so there are no way for him to move up via other divisions.

  4. I sort of agree about the comparison to last year's match. It did not have the memory stages of that match. But in my opinion it was a technical match. I saw a lot of A-Open shooters getting mikes on many stages. There were some diffucult shots on many stages and some easy shots (3yrds or less) the could lull you into missing.

On a personal note: the Texas star with the steel hard cover was a mind blower. It took awhile to notice I was pounding the hard cover and not the plates, they kept coming around and around.

I think all the stages with the drop turners well excellent beyond expectations. I got to see the big dawgs shot some of them. Stage 10, I think was the: activator steel, steel, static paper, drop turner and swinger--mirror images on the left and right. Watching the open GMs was like poetry in motion.

  5. Hi All,

Well I was pretty concerned so I started the research. First I checked TSA website-nothing.

Then I called Southwest. Their Customer Service is quite good. I was asked some questions, then put on hold for a minute or so.

Their representative said, Southwest has changed their overweight tag. They put the tag on so, when placing the bag in the airplance they will orient so as to balance out the weight.

She was very nice about the whole thing and admitted she did not know SWA had made the change.

BTW: What caught me by surprise was that there was nothing inside the bag that showed that TSA had looked at it. I have seen those tags before, that is why I was concerned.

  6. I was flying the other day on Southwest. I declared ammo at the counter. No firearm, just ammo. I asked if she was going to tell the TSA folks in back. She (counterperson) said no.

    I get to my destination.

There is a red striped tag on my bag.

Has anyone experieced this same tag?

Does anyone actually know what it means?

Being ignorant at the moment, I am treating it like a "STEAL ME" tag.

  7. Sandoz,

I have talked with Don twice this week by phone.

I am not sure of the logistical issue why you guys can not connect. But I can also tell you I have also left messages with him and he has not returned them. Be aware he does travel quite a bit so that may be an issue. My advice is to try again. Probably late next week although he will be at A2. So it may be until A2 that he is actually returning calls.

  8. You have a great question which is totally dependent on your locality. Open carry states typically refer to open carry in public places. Does your local governments (state, county, local etc) define your personal physical property (your home and lot) as private property or public?

You can ask the local cops for their opinion-get the name of the cop.

BTW: I dry fire all the time in my yard. I am out of the visual line of sight of the neighbors which helps. There are distinct advantages to dry fire in the same light conditions as your match.

If you neighbors can not see you and the cops do not care --just do it.

  9. I have a Trojan. Great gun. Very accurate. Put a ton of money it with new parts.

I have also several custom built guns from some big names in the industry.

CUSTOM IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO if you can afford it.

You can buy the parts and have the smith build your way or just give them cart blanche and let them do it.

Talk to custom builder, asked their opinion about frames and slides. The parts--Brown safeties, SV fire controls, Bomar sights, sprinco, barrels (Kart, Schuemann, Bar-Sto etc)

Go Custom all the way if you can.

  10. Just some advice on who you pick. There is a range in the West that hired company in AZ to do a study. The company was not an engineering company but architects and planning consultants. And it has caused major problems. There is a big difference. Engineering Companies have to have a registered professional engineer (PE). Anyone can put Architect or Planner behind their name, that means you, me, the guy next door. It does not speak to their qualifications. Which can come back to haunt you later as it did in NM.

The NSSF is a great resource. I personally do not know Big Guy but if he is a PE in Fl he is the type of professional you want signing your documents.

  11. First off, I generally agree with everyone. It is not an unreasonable expectation to have USPSA articulate next year's national schedule. All the above examples of organizations being able to schedule their events are proof that it can be done.

I wonder though, if there are existing contracts that need to be reviewed and re-negotiated. I believe there were committments made to PASA that might need to be reviewed. Wasn't there something about Fl wanting nationals and making a great case for FL, then it was announce there was a 10 year deal with PASA/Quincy?

Perhaps then USPSA could look at dates and venues. I would suspect that once A2 is over, there should be no excuse for delaying the annoucement of dates, venues and divisions.

I will postpone my rant about the middle of the country logic as a reason for picking a venue.

  12. I was working up in Baton Rouge for a while. I was trying to find Nik's range for a Thursday night shoot. So I go to the computer and print a map.

I am following the map to the letter, needless to say I was so far F@#$^@#%&%&g lost I was not sure I was going to live. I have been in a lot of places in the States and other coutries but nothing spooks me more than being lost, with the sun fading in behind the levies and in the swamps in LA.

  13. I clean my brass before I reload it. I use rice from Costco. 25 lbs for about $4-$8.

I use One-shot to lube my cases which makes it a lot easier on my 1050.

I also clean my base afterwards in the same rice media to take off all the residue.

The brass is has a nice bright brush finished. It is not as bright as new but clean and bright.

  14. I was at last's years match. There was almost universal grumbling about not being able to walk through the stages the day/evening before.

Most people would have been very respectfull of the ROs shooting. But again most of the stages were clear by the evening.

What did we have? Four diffucult stages in a row? Five minutes was not enough time. There would have been no harm in allowing people to walk the stages the night before or in the late afternoon when the shooting had stop.

I am not advocating walth-throughs while another squad is shooting only when the stages are empty.

The MD explicitly mentioned this issue at the end of the match. My issue is not with the number of technical stages, Paul and his staff do an excellent job of stage designs. My issue is allowing folks to adequately prepare for a stage just so long as it does not interfere with the operations of the match.

  15. Nope.

I have seen $3,000 custom guns that still need work after they were delivered.

My STI Trojan went back several times.

Please do not take this next part the wrong way, $700 is a lot of money but the cheapest single stack Wilson/Nowlin/Baer/Rock River are typcially twice that amount. I can not speak to Kimber's customer service but my experience with STI has been excellent. They fixed and returned the firearm within a week after receiving it. Wilson has always treated me fairly-great customer service.

So I think what you experieced is fairly typcially--not necessarily appreciated but a reality.
