  1. I wanted to say thanks to all that post on BE site.

I just started shooting pistols in USPSA about 15 months ago.  I never had any formal training with pistols.  My first classification was 'C'.

The great news, at least to me, was that I have been doing a lot of the drills mentioned here. And I shot my first 70% on  a classifier recently.

The things that have helped me the most are:

    1) Using a timer draw and dry fire (par time- a gagillion times)

    2) Using a timer draw and 1 shot on steel (50)

    3) Using a timer draw and 2 shots on steel (25)

    4) Draw two shots, drop mag, reload, two shots (25)

I use these four drills frequently to establish a decent foundation upon which to improve.

The last thing that has helped is using my left eye(dom.) while shooting right handed.  I changed the focus length on the left eye contact to match the pistol front sight.  So I am shooting with both eyes open.

Thanks again to all that post!

  2. I am very new to 3gun.  We had an interesting match this weekend.  Steel layed out in an arroyo.

I was shooting Walmart specials, 71/2 shot in an cylinder choke.  One piece of steel would not go down.  I patterned all around it twice.  The other 22 plates (two runs) all went down.

Walmart specials are ok for me in local matches.  I suspect I would want a little more power in a real competitive match.

You can get slugs and buckshot at Walmart for about $2.65-$2.99.  Where I live the buck and slugs come in pretty infrequently.  If any finds it a store, they usually buy a case then re-sell to friends.

I have been able to hit and miss with PMC, Federal, Remington, Winchester equally as well.

I like the idea of choking down a bit for a better concentration.  I was a little worried about shooting slugs through a modified choke.

Any thoughts about slugs and modified chokes?

  3. I have some experience in both CA and LA.  Live in Hunnington Harbor for awhile;the poorer section, Warner and Bolsa Chica if you know the area. Or really close to Seal Beach.

I am doing some work in LA.  There is a lot and I mean a lot of shooting in LA.  Weekend matches everywhere.  Including 3Gun. Although short range.   There are clubs or indoor ranges that offer matches, from .22 to mano y mano steel.

There is a concealed carry law in place.

Now if you like hunting.   You got another whole big ball game.

Culture shock will be an understatement!!!!! Get used to slow talkers and don't think that just because they talk slow they are dumb.  They are not.

The Big Easy has its own pace, either you love it or hate it.  Personally I like it and I grew up and continue to live in the high desert with skiing 30 minutes away.  Lived in FL, AZ, NM, CA and TX.

People are very nice.  Crime is Crime.  The same everywhere.  You just need to pay attention.

Just watch out for Cancer Alley.  MSY to BTR.  Lots of chemical plants.

Same story for schools if you have kids.  Got to pick the schools carefully.

New Orleans is decadent, like a really rich chocolate, it is meant to be enjoyed and not judged too harshly.

    Thus ends the verbosity.

  4. I think the new Benellis do not have the capacity of the older models.  I believe the new ones will not carry one in the receiver as did the older models.  The bottom rails on the bolt have notches which prevent the extra rounds.  This is from my personal experience, I have not done a any tinkering with it to force the issue but I do believe it was the factory's intent to no longer allow the extra round in the receiver.

The factory extended tubes generally only have a capacity of seven.  However, DMW has tube extensions to up the capacity.  But with a 21 inch barrel the tube extends about 1.25 inches beyond the end of the barrel.  With the Dave's tube and a spring cut down it is possible to nine in the tube, but there are feeding problems.

So it seems the solution might be to just have a max number of shells limit.

  5. I live in an area where there is a (re)manufacturer of ammo.  I believe he has both licenses.  I buy directly from him.  He has a minimum order of 1K but he will split that between rifle and pistol if requested.  ($150/k).  He knocks the price down if you supply him with componets e.g. brass, bullets, etc.

When I shoot in LA, I have a guy there who is a re-manufacturer license who will load for me.  So I have to supply him with the brass.

Sorry I droned on like that:

You might want to check your state for folks that do the same.  It is cheaper and you can often specify load characteristics.

  6. I am new to USPSA.  I started out with a BHP in 9mm, then went to a single stack .45.

I like the idea of 3gun matches. I went an observed a couple and asked a bunch of questions.

I purchased a Bushmaster with removable handle and a Benelli.

So here I am, a 50 year guy who enjoys shooting.  I can use iron sights out to 200 yards but boy is it tough.  So I scoped my rifle.  I shoot iron sights on both my pistol and shotgun.

Of the twenty or so people I know that shoot 3gun have a similar set-up.  I was told that if I wanted to shoot any 'big' matches I would have to go back to iron sights on my AR or buy an ACOG.  If need be I can probably spend another $800 for an ACOG.

But then there are the mag pouches for the AR and pistol rules.  UGH!!!!

The bottom line is that I just want to shoot and be somewhat competitive.  The equipment wars, ACOG, different sets of AR mag pouches, different set of pistol mag pouches,.....  UGH!!!!  It is almost a question of who has the biggest budget in order to play!!!

My suggestion is make it simple: Open for the hardcore equipment dudes and tactical for the rest of us.  Scopes on the ARs [ is nice for the over 40 bunch] and iron sights for pistols and shotguns.  No mag pouch rules-"run with what you brung" to quote the Tues Night Steel motto.

Don't Micro Manage It.  Make it fun and more people will show up.

  7. I really enjoy shooting minor.  I have a 9mm BHP which is a joy to shoot.  I also shoot a STI Trojan .45.  Since the geometry of both guns is significantly different, I do shoot them at different speeds.

The kicker is that I can reduce the .45 power factor to just make major and it then becomes just about the same as the 9mm.  .  Started out with the 9mm but all my qualifications have been with the .45.

The real kicker is that speed is more important than accuracy.  So do away with the minor v major distinction, since speed is more important in the long run.

  8. Boy What a fun thread.

I am Southwestern High Desert boy.

I have worked/live in AZ five times since 1985.  This last time I got to enjoy Tues Nite Steel for a couple of months.  I had just been introduced to USPSA by a long time friend in my home state.  Weather - hot in the summer but you need to pay attention to it, great in the winter.

I worked in NE- you need a permit to purchase a handgun there.  Lots of shotguns for birds and rifles for deer and obviously it is the  home of Cylinder and Slide. Weather-windy hot and humid. did i say windy!!!

I worked in CA last year.  S@#^$@t, the guy at the indoor range would not let me shoot without a partner-too many indoor range suicides.  My USPSA card convinced him I was not a wacko looking to off myself. Weather- I worked downtown so the weather was ok, but lived in Redondo Beach- awesome! warm days and cool nights.

I worked in Louisiana.  Cool place for shooters.  Weeknite matches.  Weather-humid and wet.  The humidity is not too bad but when it rains --like the guy from GA says 'it is a soaker!"

Worked in NM for a while.  Great place to shoot.  Weather is best. Four real seasons.  At match everyweekend.  Skiing and shooting

Did a lot of windsurfing in OR.  Now about that sunshine.  Great winds along the Columbia River, nice people, but where is  the sun?

    So in my opinion:

    Best place for shooting: AZ

    Best weather: NM

    Best Bikinis: CA

    Best Windsurfing: OR

Best Skiing: NM with OR very close

    Worst Pay: NM

Best Place for skin cancer : AZ followed by NM

  9. Did this guy follow-up with a " I am a sponsored shooter for STI and I can get you whatever you want at their prices"?

I sold 2 h&ks on HKPro with now problems.  Started to buy a shotgun off Auction Arms but ended up dealing directly with the FFL-no problems.

I try to be patient but if this guy stalls you much longer ask for your money back.  If that does not get the response you want, find the clubs in his area and start emailing the club representative about the situation.  I would also start posting on USPSA forum and classifieds if you do not get the results you want.

HKPro had a couple of guys who were burning people, they got flamed pretty fast.  Those guys took no prisoners, I am not necessarily suggesting that this is your case also but it is something to keep in mind.

    good luck

  10. I think this was going to be the first USPSA match held underwater.  Scuba tanks, masks and fins instead of raincoats and cleats.

Too bad LA had so much rain the week before and that weekend but starting Tues the skies are bright blue and cool temperatures.

Last I heard they were talking about rescheduling it.

Kind of a bummer for me because I put off going to Region II because I was going to be in LA anyway for work.  Now I can not get off to go to AZ.

    Que sera.

  11. I do about four to six flights a month.  I usually pack a firearm and ammo.  Routinely, I am asked to see the firearm to ensure it is unloaded when I leave from my home airport.  When asked about the ammo, I reply that it is a small amount for personal use.  That usually covers it.

HOWEVER, recently in the New Orleans airport I was denied shipping of the firearm.  The personl at the desk was the director for the counter staff [did not remember her real title].  She quoted right off the FAA regulations that the firearm must be in a HARD SIDED CASE AND LOCKED!.

It did not matter to her that my wheeled bag was locked and the firearm was in a softcase inside the bag.  I remarked that I had over 200,000 miles on the airline and this was the first time anyone had made an issue of it.  She would not budge. She was courteous, friendly but unmovable.

Luckily I had enough time to hump the pistol over to FedEx.  Which was another nightmare; 1) you can not ship and recieve a package to yourself and 2) either the shipper or reciever must have an FFL.

I still travel with the pistol, and it is encased in a hardsided case.

BTW, the interesting thing about the NO airport was that for the previous 8 departures, the airport personnel did not even want to see the pistol.  They response was that they would not even know what to look for!!

Bottom line for me nowdays is that I call ahead to the airlines and have them explain their policy to me before I travel with them.

  12. http://www.hkpro.com/

This is the forum for HK stuff.  Post a question there, those folks are pretty hardcore HK.  Someone there will know how to read the date code.

I am not sure, but if it post ban with a pistol grip, the mag extension maybe a bit of a problem.  Someone here probably knows the law much better than me.  Preban, and you got yourself a major deal!.  All in all the price was pretty low considering everything you got in the deal.

PS, the shape of bolt determines if it can carry the extra round in the receiver.  The guys on HKPro will help you determine this.

Sounds like you got yourself one mighty fine shotgun.

  13. i purchased a brand new M1 Field, 21in, vent rib, fiber front sight, 5 chokes for $850, the mag extension and collar set me back another $100.  this was less than 6 months ago.

two shops in phoenix/snottsdale were selling the combat benelli for $800-825.

new ones on auction arms are not going as cheap.

    hope this helps

  14. Ron,

Thanks for the insight.  After hearing that, I am more confortable with my draw times.  During dry fire and range practice sessions, I try and do a bunch of fire and reload, fire and reload drills.  It does seem to help.

Right now I am noticing that my scores are high but my time is 3-4 seconds slower, thus my hit factor is lower than those that are faster.  I will start working on the speed again in a month or so.

I really want to get a solid foundation on draws, reloads and double A before I start pushing the limits again.

BTW, this has got to be the best forum out there.  Matt's is pretty good also but it does not get near the volume of participation.

  15. I am looking to purchase a Marvel also.  So thanks for the leads.

BTW, I think bird season has started in NE.  They are pretty intense in NE about their hunting seasons.  I am surprised the entire state does not shut down during hunting season.  LA is almost as intense not quite, they are pretty laid back as a general rule but hunting down here is almost a religion.

    tks

  16. I am a C shooter pushing on towards B.  Last Friday, I started timing my draws and first shot.  My conclusion is that I raised the bar that you all can exceed.  Meaning my first couple of draws were 2.4-2.2 second range.  Paused a moment, relaxed the shoulders and settled into 1.6 - 1.8 range.  About draw 15, I could do a 1.4 to 1.57 pretty easily.

As what has been said on this forum a gillion times, relaxed and smooth is faster!!.

Next I proceed to do two shots.  The overall time was in the 1.8 - 2.3 range.  I was really trying to get my second shot to be in the same area as the first.

This practice consisted of hands at the sides and random start buzz.  I felt it really helped me improve my consistentcy.

I appreciate y'all putting your times in because it give me a reference point to aspire to.  Although I do not foresee .6 draw and shoot in anything but my dreams.

My practice drill now consists of; thirty one round draw and shoot, thirty - forty draw and shoot twice drills, twenty draw shoot once reload, shoot once reload, shoot once reload, and twenty shoot twice reload, shoot twice.

I am still inconsistent in my qualifiers, I will shoot a 60+% then a mid 50% to a 20%.  Yep 20%-I had a major brain fart that day.  I installed an oversize mag release and did not practice with it prior to the match.  Resting your thumb on the mag release instead of the safety is the fastest way I know of dropping a mag during a qualifier!!!

  17. Heck, I am new to this sport.  I shoot a single stack in L10.  It is fine for me.  There is some competition but around here the overwhelming choice in Limited.  Ok.  Have I thought about investing in a HI-Cap Gun and equipment -sure but that would be about $3000 to play with those boys and girls.  Would it bring me more fun-nope.

My feeling is the more divisions the better.  Keep the playing field as level as possible within those divisions.  But if you're carping about not being competitive in the equipment war-stop it.  If you're complaining about too many divisions stop it.  The idea here should be one of inclusiveness not exclusion.  Get people involve at whatever level they feel comfortable at.  Hand out as many awards to as many people as possible.  Positive reinfocement is a powerful motivating thing.

If you get a chance read a book by Buck Rogers of IBM, I think it is called Big Blue or the IBM Way.  He found out that rewarding many people was more productive than just rewarding the top few.  You want the sport to grow-than adapt to the environment or perish.

Bottom line for me is recognition within the classification I am in.

  18. I am left eye dominate, right handed, wear contacts with mono vision.  Mono vision is where one eye has a long distance focus (left) and the other eye is used for reading (right).  I am about as screwed up as a football bat!.

I have tried taping the left eye, closing the left eye, etc.  I noticed that when I used a brand new contact in the left eye, I could almost focus on the Dawson fiber optic front sight I had on my single stack.   So I tried that, worked ok, except when I shot indoors.

I went for my yearly checkup.  I told my eye doc I wanted to have an additional set of contacts where my left eye would be focused four inches beyond the end of my finger.

I tried it out on a practice session on Friday and shot a match on Saturday.  The results were not bad!  Friday helped me unlearn the older habits of squinting or using tape.  The left eye POA was very natural.  I shoot with both eyes open.  The match had a lot of shoot and run stages.  I felt pretty good about the experiment.  I will try it again.

I will probably end up with two sets of left eye contact prescriptions, one for shooting and one for everyday use.  I will try this out for a couple of months and give y'all feedback later.

    tks
