Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Florida Governor Jeb Bush has asked a state prosecutor to investigate possible links between Hurricane Dennis and Michael Schiavo. Governor Bush said that he connected Mr. Schiavo with the category 3 storm after realizing that Dennis spelled backwards is actually 'sinned.' Click Here for complete story.
  2. Aaaagh! A perfectly good grandbagger stage to get me to B class, and I get a big fat ZERO. I shoot the first three targets TWICE freestyle, then forgot to miss those targets strong-hand. Three extra shots + three extra hits = 60 points in penelties on a 60 point stage.
  3. I happened to catch a Yoga show while they were doing eye exercises, and followed along. Basically, they had you watch your thumb while making big circles with your arms. I guess that's the equivalent of the eye rolling exercise. I guess it was a good workout, my eye muscles hurt for a week Start slowly.
  4. I give up. (from the Simpsons) Mr. Burns: Let's see. What should I have for lunch? Smithers: How about Chinese. Mr. Burns: No, no. Those people are all gristle.
  5. Hey, that guy continued to work after being shot THREE times. The Glock stopped working after being shot just once! Hopefully, all future gun reviews will include "The .357 Magnum test." 1911 vs. Glock 21: Which one is better at stopping a bullet? A head to head showdown.
  6. I just want to say I'm glad there is the occational Bush joke here on the BE forums. Having a balance of Bush/Clinton-Hillery-Kerry-Liberal (ok, that doesn't exactly look balanced) jokes makes the humor forum here Apolitical. It makes me feel welcome, or at least like I won't be shouted down just because my signature says "Gun Toting Liberals."

    Leading Targets

Don't be silly. I'd need the Ballistic Coefficient of the bullet to figure that out.

    Leading Targets

Check my math, but: If the end of the shooters barrel is moving at 1 m/s* then the lateral velocity** of the bullet would be 1 m/s. If the bullet is moving at 300 m/s, and the target is 10 meters away, the flight time for the bullet is 1/30 sec or .0333 sec. Given the 1 m/s lateral velocity from above, the bullet will impact the target 3.33 cm ( about 1.3 inches) past where the gun was pointing when the bullet left the barrel. This is, or course, in full swing. To correct for this, make sure your bullet exits the barrel .00333 seconds before your gun is pointed at your intended point of impact. If the target is 10m away, and moving at 10m/s, your correct lead is 30cm and not the 33cm you might expect (about 12 vs. 13 inches). And try not to puke on the RO's shoes. * I’m working in meters, because the math is a lot easier. Given, two targets that are 2 meters apart on center, 10 meters from the shooter, and the end of the shooters barrel is 1 meter from the shooters pivot point, and it takes .2 seconds at a constant velocity to get from the center of one target to the center of the second target, then the barrel is moving at 1 m/s. There is a lot of guess work there, but the barrel moving at 1 m/s seems about right to me. ** Tangent to the arch of the barrel tip, and perpendicular to the axis of the bore, at the point the bullet left the barrel, and moving in the direction of the swing.
  9. I don't know if I should feel vindicated or POed. I was intending to do exactly this at our monthly match, and let myself be talked out of it. One of the guys on our squad swore up and down that all walls extend upwards to infinity, and that he knew because he was a CRO. He said he would show me where it was in the rule book, maybe I'll take him up on that and see what happens.
  10. Whoa, don't get me wrong. Of course I'm in favor of cutting the local clubs some slack, especially if it saves some expense and manpower. I just find it funny that there are a couple of paragraphs of rules that really only apply to Level III matches. (I have a really odd sense of humor.)
  11. Because Jeff Cooper, in all his wisdom, believes in the Cooper index, a bastardization of Hatcher's (I think, off of the LaGrange 'study') Stopping Power index, which is based on Mass X Velocity X Diameter (of the projectile). It was state-of-the-art in 1950, and that's by-God, good enough for Cooper.
  12. As has been stated, only Standard Exercises and Shoot-offs can require mandatory reloads (1.1.5 in the current rulebook: ...Mandatory reloads may not be specified except in Standard Exercises and shoot-offs.) Then we add 6.1.2 which says "Standard Exercises * A course of fire consisting of more than one separately timed component strings" and "Standard exercises shall be scored using Virginia Count only. Not being able to leave well enough alone, USPSA adds US6.1.2 "...Standard Exercises shall be scored using Virginia Count or Fixed Time only." So just make it Virginia Count, right? Except for 9.2.2.1 "...Only paper targets may be used [in Virginia Count]. So there go your pepper poppers. That leaves you with Fixed Time scoring. Actually, making it fixed time might make the stage more interesting, think about it. That 'more than one string' thing is a potential problem, but we will skip that for now. Then there is that "Level I and II competitions and Classifiers are not required to compy strictly" business. I'd say if you can find it in a classifier, you can do it in your Level I and II matches. Are there any classifiers that have Poppers and a mandatory reload? Yup, 99-28 'Hillbillton Drill' has Poppers and a mandatory reload, and no 'seperately timed component strings.' So, it sounds like the stage is legal, if only because the applicable rules don't have to be applied. Forgive me, I just got done with the RO class and it's take-home test. One more thing. In IPSC rules, Virginia Count stages, and therefore Standard Exercises, are not allowed in Level IV or higher matches (9.2.2.1), and the rules don't have to be followed in Level I or II matches, so IPSC wrote rules that only apply to Level III matches. Why?
  13. If it is true that engaging T6 twice from C2 is 1 procedural for not following the stage proceedure of engaging "only T5"; then it would still be only one procedural for engaging T4 as well as T6 from C2, no? Also, no additional penelties for not engaging T4 and T6 from C1 and C2 respectively? Vince, would you mind posting the e-mail you sent to John Amidon and his reply? It might be nice to have in the range bag if this classifier comes up. How do you keep Wally's RO in Walla-Walla from saying, "One proceedural for not following the stage procedure, welcome to A-class," while Josh's RO in Osh-Kosh is saying, "Four procedurals, one for each shot fired at something other than T5, looks like you'll be in C-class a while longer," when Wally and Josh did the exact some thing?
  14. C class production, but so close to B class. For the time being, it's still "suck by association."
