  1. It bothers me you’d point shoot anything. You should have some awareness of sight relationship to the target, even on the first shot of a 3 yard paper target. Second, your grip should be refined enough that as you transition to the next target the sights stay lined up. The gun comes into your sight line for the next target and the sights should be pretty much aligned and your just breaking the shot and moving on based on your call. EYES, HEAD, GUN. EVERY TIME.
  2. Generally, for me, it’s easier to speed up the process than slow down the process. If all all things are considered and i can get the array with an easy set up and no shuffling,...Then I would engage the hard target first, ramping up the speed of shooting over the easier targets and leaving on an easy. YMMV
  3. The only advice I’d take right there^^^^^ This is more than common and well documented. Do what you want, but MemphisMechanic nailed this.
  4. Installed Dawson no gap Ice Magwell. Ordered more Dawson 1911 9mm magazines. Ordered a case of SNS 147 grain round nose red 9mm bullets. Bought 1 pound of Titegroup powder. Hopefully I’ll get this dialed in and record some base times on some standard drills. I’d like to shoot Atlanta Indiana’s first match on March 25th.
  5. Bought Dawson 1911 no gap ice magwell and another Dawson mag. Should rcv next week. Sold the Tripp magazines. Did not break even, lol. Lessons learned.
  6. Rcv’d the Dawson mag. No more issues. I think ill I’ll get the Dawson no gap ice magwell also.
  7. Here’s a link to where I’m at. I just don’t think the Tripp’s are going to get the job done. I have a 1 Dawson Mag ordered. No hurries, it’ll sort out soon enough.
  8. They are Tripp mags i ordered a Dawson mag to test. Might have to switch.
  9. Lol I honestly have no idea if you’re teasing. This is only happens if a round is fired and I try to drop a mag and reload. It happens if I fire 1 and then reload ...or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9.
  10. Yep, you nailed it. Hard to reload during a stage when you have to pull every mag out by hand, lol. Sucks! I’m just trying to figure “how much”? Can I get a pretty good roll on it without hurting anything else? So far, I’ve took off all burrs on that edge. But looking at it, you really can’t see a “roll” per se. I just didn’t know how much. I will do as you advise and just “break” it and then test. I’ve also stoned the surface from there to the firing pin stop. It’s now smooth as glass.
  11. The magazines do not drop free if you fire a round. Why? I am told that one possible cause might be this edge. As the next round gets picked up, this edge contacts the round below it. If the edge is sharp it can push/bias that next round just slightly forward of the magazine. So basically, the bullet portion of the round is out of the mag and will drag on the inside of the frontstrap when you hit the mag release. Hanging the mag up. This is what is happening in my 9mm 1911. My question to the gunsmiths is... How much can or should I round this edge referenced in the above link.
  12. Hi, here is a link showing the “edge” I have been told to “round”, it has a red line on it. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1920&bih=1099&q=1911+breech+face&oq=1911+breech+face&gs_l=img.3..0j0i24k1l2.2512.11661.0.12221.39.27.12.0.0.0.190.2041.24j1.25.0....0...1.1.64.img..2.36.2016.0..35i39k1j0i8i30k1j0i10i24k1.vwugkEEZPmk#imgrc=ZovQfm3_RgScDM: 1911 Springfield 9mm Problem: this edge is pushing rounds just out of the magazine. This causes magazines to “hang up” when reloading. My question: How much can I round this edge?
  13. Ok, I rcv’d my new Tripp mags. As before they are top quality and show impeccable workmanship. As before they do not drop free if you fire any rounds. I took the gun and mags to my buddy Phil. We went over what was advised and followed Cha-Lee’s advice above. Stoning and rounding all surfaces mentioned. If if you are reading Cha-Lee,...how much can we round that edge high lighted in the Link you provided above? We only went as far as “it’s smooth with no burrs”. We even did the excessive oil trick to see if that would work. Nope. Saturated the top of every round in the magazine, NOPE. So, right now the mags are crammed full and I’ll leave them sit a week. I
  14. Ok, I’m back. Just spent 9 months not shooting and I think I am in a position to finally shoot. I just pulled the the trigger on Tripp mags, ......again! With Cha-Lee’s advice, I think I can get this gun to drop the mags. I’m not going to get all excited. I’m just going to let the new mags get here and then work at getting them to work (drop free). Then I will do some load development and get that dialed. Then shoot. My my goals are different than before. I want to understand the “Shooting”. Moving from Open to irons will hopefully allow me to really become a student of the gun. I’m not so much about shooting a match every weekend, like I used to do. For me, it’s become More about learning, not necessarily winning. Hopefully though, with a more “student/discovery” mindset, winning will be a by product.
  15. CHA-LEE I contacted the manufacturer and we had a good discussion. I decided on going the return/refund route. I did try a few simple fixes that I thought might fix the problem. First, I was loaded long. 1.160 OAL. I reset my die and the new OAL was 1.130. Didn't help. Second, I loaded up the mags and let them sit for a bit. This did take some tension out of them, but I still got failure to mag eject, even starting with only two rounds in the mag. You diagnosed the problem perfectly. When the round was being chambered out of the magazine, it pulled the round below it forward quite a ways. This caused the magazine to hang up on ejection because the top round was pulled so far forward it touched the inside of the front strap. I am interested in any fix for this. If you have fixes, I'd like to hear them. I'm going to get 6 more magazines as soon as my refund is credited and who knows,...I might experience this again.
  16. After more testing and OAL changes, I still can't get my mags to drop free if a round is chambered. It's frustrating because I enjoyed my one SS foray. Was looking forward to another match where my equipment worked. Geez, I've shot Open since 2003 and almost never an equipment problem. In other words, they drop free, just not after you charge the gun. I'm a little aggravated. Lots of money for equipment that's not working as I hoped.
  17. I shot my first SS match at Warsaw. It was great to be back on that range (40 miles from home) surrounded by friends I haven't seen in awhile. The shooting was accurate, but slow. I could have pulled the trigger quicker. I had failures to "magazine eject" on every mag change. This added huge amounts of time to every stage. It was ugly. Stage plans were good and I executed fine as far as running my plan. But, the whole match could be defined as methodically slow with painful reloads, lol. OAL on my rounds was too long causing the mags to hang up. This has been fixed. I will probably shoot Atlanta, IN next weekend. Oh, I checked my classifier on a calculator on the web and it seems to be in the low 60's. Calc said 63%. 1st match 16 out of 27 overall. SS minor. Mag changes from hell B range classifier Fun stuff.
  18. Kinda new to loading cast bullets. I am wondering what someone does to remove wax from the outside of the loaded round? Does it even matter?
  19. Used True Blue exclusively for several years in .38 super and 9 major. Load listed above is almost exactly what I used in 9mm. Except I was at 8.1grains in my Custom open by by GAN's. I switched to Autocomp and liked it just a tad better in the 9. Ymmv.
  20. Wanted to mention that I'm shooting 127gr cast w/ 5.4gr of Autocomp at 1.165 OAL.
  21. NRA convention was a good trip. I talked to Jake while I was there at the USPSA booth. As always, booth was great and busy. So much rain here that my first match at Wildcat was cancelled today. I loaded up 4 mags and went down to my pond, I mean range, and shot my plate machine at about Ten yards. Also did some fast berm drills just to get that sight tracking for me. Mainly, I wanted to see if my new mags and reloads were ok. I need lots more shooting work to be comfortable with these iron sights, but I ain't gonna sweat it anymore. It's not as bad a transition as I thought. I know that perception might change in the middle of my first match. Hahaha. Warsaw,....here I come!
  22. I now have everything. I am SS compliant and gear is squared away. I have redone the rig twice and I am done fidgeting with it. Bullets nose out was weird, I guess too many years of the other way. So, its traditional pouch set up for me. I thought today would be my first match at BORCC in Michigan, but we read the schedule wrong. I put the the rig on and adjusted everything one last time and did my first dryfire session. Mostly mag changes working my way through all my new Tripp mags. I concentrated on smoothness. Just trying to be smooth and clean in the motions. I will I'll likely go down to my range and get some baseline times down before Wednesday. Bill Drill 2x2x2 El Presidente Near to far Plate Machine. I will be at the NRA convention next weekend. FUN
  23. Nothing in the mail. Disappointed. I have a lot to do before this weekend and my first ever SS match. My friend Phil hooked me up with some very nice 127 gr cast lead bullets that he made. Quality is tops, if you knew Phil you'd understand that he doesn't do anything wrong when it comes to this stuff. I want to get that rig and my Tripp mags. I need to get some dry fire mag change practice. It will improve over time, but I need those mechanics drilled for a bit. I've almost never had to reload more than once (open) so moving from one pouch to the next I've never practiced. This is is going to be fun.
  24. Went to try out some different loads at Phils house. I shot some 147's and some 127's both right at 130pf. Frankly, the whole 147gr for minor thing is lost on me. Maybe it's all the years shooting open at major PF with 115's and 124's? All I know is that 147's felt mushy, slow and sluggish. The 127's felt crisp, snappy and quick. I felt like I was on the sight quicker and ready to go! Maybe its a perception thing, but for now I'll be getting SNS 125's. Bought my complete SS rig from Stoegers pro shop. +$300 Bought 6 Tripp SS mags in 9mm, +$220 geez, that's some chaching. Shoot A's Chris, just shoot A's!!!
